Prestigious T.H.E. Award for the AiW
The Arab Institute for Women (AiW) has won the Best Research Project of the Year Award at the Times Higher Education Awards Arab World 2024 for its project, Countering Backlash: Reclaiming Gender Justice. The judges praised AiW’s work for its solid academic research and real-world impact in addressing vital social issues. This recognition comes at an auspicious time as LAU celebrates its centennial, and the AiW marks 50 years of advancing gender issues and bridging the gap between academia and activism.
In the Spirit of Giving
To help small businesses and raise vital funds for the displaced and families in need of support, the Office of the Deans of Students held a market on December 3 and 4 on the Byblos campus, aptly titled “In the Spirit of Giving.” The 15 booths selling Christmas ornaments, artisanal products, gifts and baked goods, among others, drew crowds of students and visitors eager to give back. The businesses and NGOs retained the sales revenues, while proceeds from booth donations went to philanthropic efforts.
“We Are Lebanon:” A Day of Unity and Hope
Marking Lebanon’s 81st Independence Day, LAU student clubs organized several activities that helped raise funds to benefit the displaced communities, including selling baked goods, flowers and candles. The Music Club partnered with the Ecole d’Art et de Musique and Layalina, who performed well-known patriotic songs. Their peers in the Public Speaking Club organized a public speaking competition themed around delivering messages of unity and hope for Lebanon.
Alumni Wael Arakji and Yasmine Darwich Make the Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List
Basketball star Wael Arakji (BS ’16) has made the Forbes Middle East 30 Under 30 List for 2024 in the Sport and Entertainment category, in recognition of his contribution to multiple regional and international wins. Alumna Yasmine Darwich (BS ’21) was also listed for Social Impact, for her work on DonaLeb, a fitness and wellness platform that promotes employee engagement through virtual fitness challenges, while also supporting charitable causes.
Dr. Ali Fakih’s article in the Defence and Peace Economics Journal is among the trending articles
An article by Professor and Chairperson of the Economics Department at the Adnan Kassar School of Business Ali Fakih titled “The impact of Syrian refugees on the labor market in neighboring countries: empirical evidence from Jordan” has been recognized as a trending publication in Defence and Peace Economics. This study provides an in-depth analysis of how Syrian refugees affect the labor markets in Jordan, adding critical insights to regional economic discussions.
Dr. Hussein F. Hassan Joins Scientific Reports Editorial Team
Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at LAU’s School of Arts and Sciences and Director of Academic Compliance at the Provost’s Office Hussein F. Hassan has joined the editorial team of Scientific Reports, a Q1 journal by Nature. This role complements his editorial position with Elsevier’s Q1 Applied Food Research. Dr. Hassan emphasized LAU’s commitment to “advancing scientific knowledge and fostering impactful contributions to the global scientific community.”
Dr. Marc Haddad Appointed Associate Editor of Prestigious Engineering Journal
LAU Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management Marc Haddad has been appointed as an associate editor of the Engineering Management Journal (EMJ), of the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM), which publishes studies about the strategic and operational management of engineering, project management, technology transfer, and quality and risk management. A prolific researcher himself, Dr. Haddad underscored “the immense value of fostering and nurturing knowledge generation at LAU.”
New Speaker Series Debuts with Talks on Displacement and Peacebuilding
The Department of Political and International Studies hosted Associate Professor Ian S. Spears from the University of Guelph and UNHCR Representative in Lebanon Ivo Freijsen in its newly launched Guest Speaker series. Through separate talks, they addressed Lebanon’s displacement crisis, the proactive role of youth, and lessons from Africa on conflict resolution. Both speakers underscored the importance of forward-thinking responses in addressing humanitarian needs and fostering peacebuilding across diverse, crisis-affected regions.
Prof. Maya Farah: The Only Female Marketing Scholar in MENA Ranked Among World’s Top 2 Percent Scientists
Dr. Maya Farah (BS ’00; MBA ‘02), chairperson of the Marketing Department at the Adnan Kassar School of Business, is the only female professor not only in Lebanon but also in the MENA region to be listed in the ‘Marketing’ category among the World’s Top 2 percent scientists for 2024 by Stanford University and Scopus Elsevier. Dr. Farah dedicated her success to Lebanon, its most resilient people, her alma mater LAU, and her family for their unwavering support.
In Aid of the Displaced
On October 3, 21 students of the civic engagement class at the School of Engineering, along with their lecturer Elie Elias, participated in a three-hour community service activity with Caritas at their headquarters in Halat. The students assisted with sorting clothing donations and at the call center. On another visit to Caritas HQ, 15 students from the class spent time helping to prepare food boxes. This community service will continue on a weekly basis as long as there is a need.
