Back in January, reports came out that the US was planning a massive joint military exercise with Israel that was viewed as a possible precursor to an attack on Iran. Later that month, the exercise was called off, although it was not exactly clear why. The exercise was rescheduled to take place in October, just weeks before the presidential election, but new reports indicate it will be drastically scaled down.

Corrie verdict energizes worldwide movement to challenge Israeli impunity
On August 28th, the day that an Israeli Judge absolved the military of any responsibility in the 2003 killing of peace activist Rachel Corrie as she stood to protect a Palestinian home from demolition, the majority of the small Palestinian village of Khirbet Zanuta was demolished. The Corrie verdict, that was handed down as the bulldozers tore through Khirbet Zanuta, confirmed that the Israeli legal system supports the military’s ability to act with impunity. The verdict has also empowered a worldwide movement working to hold Israel accountable through boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Exile and the Prophetic: Shoah business
Lanzmann’s film checked in at more than nine hours in length. By the end of the film you don’t have the energy to say Palestinian, let alone the courage. By remembering the Holocaust in this way, the hope was that you would forget all about Palestinians. More or less, Lanzmann accomplishes this goal.
Lanzmann’s documentary shuts down discussion related to Israel and the Palestinians. It also shuts down discussion about life beyond the Holocaust and how the Holocaust, if it is to retain any meaning at all, must be a bridge toward all those who are suffering, including and especially the Palestinian people.

Perpetrators of the Nakba
While the testimony of survivors plays a vital role in establishing the facts of genocide and ethnic cleansing, an approach that focuses on perpetrators can tell us much more about why such events occur. Many studies have examined perpetration at the level of ideology and top-level power politics. Studies of perpetrators at lower levels – the people whose violent acts directly accomplish genocide and ethnic cleansing – are rarer, though studies of this type also yield valuable insights.
