The most abused word in our current political lexicon is "links," as in: Country X has 'links' to Al Qaeda." This weasel word means whatever warmongers want it to mean. The US has extensive "links" to lots of countries & groups, but that doesn't mean we're in cahoots w/them.

2/ As I recall, @EliLake also doesn't want us to blame the actual cause of Iran's greatly expanded regional influence -- the Iraq war.
So, we are to "blame" diplomacy for its successes but not belligerence for its failures.
