They didn't say that - they merely warned (correctly, perhaps) that the opportunity may not come again, as these things don't tend to happen frequently.
It's hardly "spurious" to demand the right given the major constitutional change being imposed.

They only want it blocked in the short term. If no-deal happened with the present parliament, they would be quickly forced into an election. Any fall-out from it would be fresh in voters' minds.
