People tend to follow their leaders, especially ones they're wild about. So, when Trump says, of "nationalist," "Use that word. Use that word." -- will they? It will be interesting to observe, in coming months and years.

I have an Impromptus column today. Starts with Julian Assange -- not the easiest houseguest, Ecuadoreans are finding -- and ends with composers. (Who's in your pantheon?) Various and sundry in between. See if you dig something (as we said way back).

Trump has declared himself a "nationalist." (This is in concert with "America First.") What is nationalism, and populism, and patriotism, and conservatism? These are the fault lines on the right today, and the sources of our fiercest debates. Orbán or Sasse? Le Pen or Reagan? &c.

Got a little podcast for you, a "Jaywalking" -- foreign affairs, politics, music, sports, and maybe even a joke. In this podcast, we hear from two singers: Jonas Kaufmann and Taylor Swift. Sometimes you gotta shake it off.

A very smart column. True, too, I think.

In a bracing article, speaks of a license to kill -- the Kremlin's, the Saudi government's, others'. Is there anything that civilized people can do?

By the look of it, it's all here. Dissembling becomes harder -- and insulting.

I've often chafed at the assertion that hostile speech leads to hostile acts. This is a topic I've written about over and over again. Still, if enough people make someone an Emmanuel Goldstein, maybe someone will figure he has to take Goldstein out.

I know it's boring to say this, but should baseball really be played this late in the year?

For the music-minded, a review of Igor Levit in recital. He is, quite simply, a great pianist -- not a potential one, but one already. They never stop coming, you know. We may think they do, in our nostalgia and pessimism, but they never stop coming.

Last week, made a point: It's one thing to persecute and oppress; but dictatorships add insult to injury with their flimsy lies. I've done a quick post on the subject. (Memo to journalists: Stay out of fistfights with Saudi death squads!)

An Igor Levit recital on Friday. A Michigan win on Saturday. A Lions win on Sunday. Dare I ask for Monday?
