From our Collection - The 1880s saw increased popular interest in the aesthetics of the . A page from Racinet's L’Ornament Polychrome, deuxieme séries (1885) tries to capture the ornate gold patterning & geometric designs of the “Byzantine style”.

The Dumbarton Oaks Pebble Garden contains 18th century lead sculptures of a Triton and two amorini on Hippocamps. The sculptures, said to be originally from the Water Theater at Versailles in Paris, were gifts to Mildred Bliss from Gertrude Chanler of Meridian House in 1959.
