I wonder, too. I imagine and hope her advisers have been thinking about it. "Wargaming" I doubt. I was a bit worried by what I read recently in the @campbellclaret diaries about the Palace's brief attempt to persuade Gordon Brown to delay resigning.

Or simply the final, sudden collapse of May's government. HMQ might just be forced to choose between appointing Corbyn immediately on May's resignation (amid Tory outrage) or else persuading May to stay on to allow a Tory transition (amid Labour outrage).

There might not be time! This sort of situation could arise in January. The only way of appearing to avoid it might be for HMQ to persuade May not to resign for a week or two - which would itself be controversial.

But she might be forced into a situation where no option is uncontroversial.

I'm concerned that the behaviour of politicians in recent years, if continued, might mean she or King Charles is forced before long to do something they'd wish to avoid, such as having to make a controversial appointment of Prime Minister.

Jonathan Coe's Middle England is a very good novel of this moment in England. I like all his earlier things, especially The House of Sleep. You'll have done Iris Murdoch perhaps. I recommend A Severed Head.

I finally read Goethe's Elective Affinities a few years back, and now know why some people are fascinated by it. A Prayer for Owen Meany is brilliant, but I bet you've read it.

Hello! 2018 has been heavy on the negative (from me also).
I'm considering launching a podcast in 2019. Interviews/discussions on how human rights can make us and the world better, happier and healthier. Like if you would be interested, RT if you may chip in a few £ to support...
