Certainly has done a very good job with the important digital dossier in the EU, moving those issues forward, and I sincerely hope that this can be continued. That’s a key area for Europe in the years ahead.

The global role of the EU will be far more in focus during the next few years. I guess the President of the European Council will be increasingly important for this, bringing the PM’s together, as will naturally the High Representative be.

Of course it’s important who heads the European Commission, but we should not forget that legislative powers in the EU isn’t with the Commission, but with the Council and the Parliament.

Well, it started with Helmut Kohl veto against Rudd Lubbers, and then John Major turning down Jean-Luc Dehane. It was all rather acrimonious. At the end someone from Luxembourg often comes up.

I was at 25 years ago when it was about a successor to Jacques Delors as Commission President. The meeting ended in deep disagreement, and a new meeting was called on July 15, when Jacques Santer emerged. But now it’s more difficult with five positions to be decided.

Rumor has it that has been put forward by as new EU High Representative. If true, then the wisdom behind the move somewhat eludes me.

In the turmoil at tonight I sincerely hope that attention is given to appointing an experienced and heavy-hitting High Representative. Foreign policy in today’s more contested, complex and conflict-ridden world is not for amateurs.

I think it will be a long night for the EU leaders in Brussels tonight. But they have to produce a decision. To postpone the decisions would make things even more complicated.

Positive that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have instructed their respective FM’s to discuss the issues connected with a possible extension of the New START strategic arms limitation regime. An extension should be in the mutual interest.

What’s the small print of the US-China trade truce? The Huawei concession is obviously important. But what’s further down the road?

EU should react! Russia is seriously putting up pressure on Georgia. Air travel has been halted and import of Georgia wines stopped. Now also these serious measures.

A truce that avoids further immediate escalation and restart talks is the outcome of the Trump meeting with Xi Jinping. At least something. US concession on Huawei probably helped as well.

The conclusion of the EU-Mercosur negotiations demonstrates that there is a clear appetite to improve and expand trade. The IMF will follow up to analyze specific aspects of the agreement and to assess the potential benefits for economic activity and trade.
