Furtively, in writing the Worden-Davis farewell to Homicide, I wrote my own goodbye to The Sun. I’d taken a buyout and that was my last byline. Some of that verbiage was camouflaged; me reflecting on the end of my own gig.

And you think the words “he said” deliver some greater margin of veracity? Ok. I know they taught us that in newswriting 101. I unlearned it the moment I wanted to tell a story of what it felt like to be a firefghter, rather than a story of a reporter interviewing a firefighter.

Nah. I worked with a lot of smart people. All of us were taught the rules of quote-and-attribution as gospel. It was then a next-step journey to learn when to break those rules.

You've not read carefully enough. Go back two tweets. Observed dialogue between people? Quote the hell out of it. That's real people in the world, being. Quotes delivered to reporters. That's the opposite. It's dead weight. Use the facts only.

1) Moving closer to the flames, Johnson could feel his lungs tightening. He was gasping at each breath.
2) As Johnson moved toward the flames, "I could feel my lungs tightening. I was gasping for air," he said.
Both accurate. #1 is writing, #2 newswriting.

True. And in writing narrative my overarching rule was this: Dialogue BETWEEN people observed candidly? Quote the hell out of it. They're in the world, being. Dialogue told to a REPORTER. No quote. Use it as if you know the character's mind...

I’ll bite, Justin: The very structure of the attributed quote is one reason why many journalists, even when in possession of greater narratives than novels, do not deliver literature.
