I know what moderate Islam looks like; I have worked with Muslim colleagues & students of both sexes for years. None of them practice or are subject to KSA style guardianship laws.

Judging from some ludicrous outpourings from a highly educated evangelical colleague, I have the unsettling feeling that an infectious disease that affects the intellectual faculties has come over the Pond with some of those Westboro Baptist Bibles & newsletters.

That may be the ideal, but the reality is somewhat different. Some who profess to practice Islam are quite comfortable with sex slavery (eg ISIS). Control of other adult human beings is alwys open to abuse, even if the intention behind the law is honourable. It is also insulting.
