Likud Central Committee voting down Sharon’s disengagement proposal & afterwards cutting off his microphone at their Central Committee Meeting is probably the most public I’ve seen a party try to oust their own Prime Minister. Instead Sharon left Likud & remained Prime Minister.

It wouldn't be illegal but it would be illogical. According to the law it is Netanyahu that decides who to send to represent the Likud at the President's Residence during the first nomination process. Why would he send someone who would nominate someone else for PM?

That brings me to the big hole in the b&w strategy. The point is that Netanyahu would still be Likud leader even if he fails at 1st round. Blue&White would have to negotiate with the PM. Negotiating with a secondary Likud figure would be of no practical use unless they broke off.

1) Likud constitution determines that it's the membership alone - not the ministers or MKs - that determines the Likud leader.
2) There is no legal precedent of nominating a PM candidate at the President's Residence who is not #1 on his/her list during 1st nominating process.
