"Unfortunately, by any objective measure, most new things are bad. People are positively brimming with awful ideas... Skepticism towards new ideas turns out to be remarkably well-warranted."

"Don’t trust shocking claims with a single source, even if they’re from a well-regarded expert. It’s all too easy to misread a study, and all too easy for those errors to make it all the way to print."

We just wanted to clarify as a point of fact that there were certainly well more than 90 free speech incidents. We don't want to exaggerate, but we don't want to minimize either.

Also, FIRE only tracks about 450 schools, only 1/10! If they comparably tracked all of them, numbers would likely be *much* higher. But again, we don't dispute the point that the crisis narrative is unhelpful. We agree!

Sure, but these three databases aren't comprehensive, and make no claim to being so. And in fact, FIRE has plenty of other incidents in other databases they track other than disinvitations. They get about 1k requests for representation per year.

That said, we also highlight the selective concern among some for certain types of viewpoint diversity and not others, e.g. :

We don't typically support the 'crisis' language around these issues either, but just as a point of fact, the '90 incidents' number you are quoting is actually from a Vox article, and we explain how the Georgetown data was misinterpreted here:

to formulate solutions -- and crowdsource them as well, identifying through our research what works, who is doing it well, and trying to celebrate those institutions, groups and actors and amplify their efforts.

We could go on and on. At Heterodox Academy, from the outset, we have been focused on moving away from anecdotes and extreme incidents to trying to systematically and empirically study ways research, pedagogy, etc. can go awry -- but also...

Here is a conservative member, who was actually the target of one of these student-led campaigns to oust him, writing in a conservative-leaning outlet, pushing back against the very narratives you are concerned about:

We are a consortium made up entirely of faculty, administrators and grad students (thousands of them). One could say we also spend a lot of time around academia. Importantly, we also reject and critique Fox News style-narratives about campus life, e.g.

In reality, we argue that everyone has a stake in ideological diversity, it is intimately bound up with other forms of diversity, ergo those concerned about ideological diversity should be concerned about other forms too (and vice versa):
