A lot of assumptions need to be made though. Also, the binary isn’t Linux native so a layer still needs to deconstruct it to make the correct calls, I would think. I need to read more.

Depends on if you’re running the windows native compiles modules in that subsystem or external ones. I haven’t played with it much though, not even sure if you can compile under it.

Not really, because a runtime environment is programmed to, meaning the program is specially making calls designed to be be runtime compiles and executed, this is employing a runtime on a native binary so it’s a bit different but I get your thinking.

Oh yeah, I still have shitloads of mods from Purple Motion and Skaven somewhere on my NAS. I actually was friends with Skaven back in the day and talked to him on EFNet on IRC before he shipped out with the military and we didn’t talk again after that.

This means you’re doing things right. Nobody wasted their time trying to get attention from someone they are not super jealous of. 👍🏻

Steve’s analysis is on point. My hats off to him for his depth of knowledge on the topic of benchmarking. Can’t wait to see his benchmarks in a vacuum as it’s supposed to be done and hopefully intel calling attention to the real data. twitter.com/GamersNexus/st…

You’re knowledge on testing is insane dude. If I ever benchmark shit I look forward to you tearing me from limb to limb for gross negligence 👍🏻😎

@tekwendell I honestly would love your opinion on this? So many people tell me I’m wrong but I believe the POSIX call translation counts as emulation since it adds calls to the stack to simulate the end result of the Windows API calls. 140 characters, let’s here it! 🤔

My favorite demo to this day is Second Reality by future crew! It gave me an ASMR response.

That’s because when you’re translating calls you can’t anticipate every single little permutation people used making those calls. So it requires a lot of static configuration so calls are made as expected because you don’t have all the if/f/if statements everywhere like Windows.

Correct, because by changing the calls you’re shimming the call stack which means your doing some translation which means you’re emulating anything that might not directly translate.

It’s a lot easier with a high level language because you have access to small APIs that translate to big work loads. Doing the shit in assembly directly calling into the kernel and direct to hardware in DOS required next level ingenuity!

Holy shit! I haven’t seen that demo yet. I can’t even imagine how that is even possible with the rawest of code. Is that 4k with compression? Or executable size? They must have massive re-use generating those visuals.

Agreed, I don’t recall FreeBSD having any X UI. But, I haven’t used it in like 20 years lol. Most Linux distributions back then didn’t have a UI unless you installed one.

Not saying it’s not cool, but it absolutely adds calls to the stack to translate the API calls, it has too otherwise it wouldn’t work. This could be considered software emulation since the end result is different calls than the original software is making. That’s my point.

The new driver development model in Windows 10 is pretty amazing. Took MICROSOFT a long time to realize drivers are the weak link and provide an ecosystem that protects the systems execution when the drivers fall short.

Oh yeah, the Assemby shit is nuts! I remember the flaming text demo Future Crew did in under 5 kilobytes back in the early 90s. Looks crazy realistic and fonts were amazing, I still can’t believe how they did it. The contest was about who could right the coolest thing under 5k.

The thing that scares me is that used something free & evolved it into a closed platform (well, partially). What if MICROSOFT does the same to Linux? Not many people know what BSD is but everyone knows what Mac OS or OSX is, it’s crazy to think how the older guy can be forgotten
