“Live Wire Radio” Announces “Damp January with Luke Burbank,” A New Special Podcast Series Exploring Our Relationship with Alcohol

The series launching January 1 will also feature conversations with special friends, including author Gary Shtyengart, podcaster Nora McInerny, comedian Moshe Kasher, and more

The acclaimed public radio variety show Live Wire Radio today announced Damp January with Luke Burbank, a new limited series podcast: launching January 1, 2025. Host Luke Burbank knows his way around a drink. At times, he’s gotten too familiar with the stuff, which is why he’s now trying to fix his relationship with alcohol.

The special podcast series will be distributed by Peabody Award-winning public media organization PRX. PRX is also the distributor of Live Wire Radio:

Introducing "Damp January" from Live Wire

For Damp January, Luke will talk to friends, family, and cultural luminaries living at various points on the booze spectrum — from enthusiastic imbibers to teetotalers and everyone in between. After a booze-heavy pandemic and increased attention to alcohol’s health risks, many have reconsidered their habits. But is mindful consumption actually achievable?

The series will explore these questions with humor, honesty, and (occasionally) a little liquid courage. Notable guests will also include New York Times bestselling author Gary Shtyengart, hit podcaster and writer Nora McInerny (Terrible, Thanks for Asking), comedian Moshe Kasher, journalist and hangover cure-seeker Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, plus Luke’s own mother.

The series will be available free on-demand across all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Pocket Casts, and Overcast with new episodes available every Wednesday in January.

Host Luke Burbank

About PRX

Celebrating more than 20 years as a nonprofit public media company, PRX works in partnership with leading independent creators, organizations, and stations to bring meaningful audio storytelling into millions of listeners’ lives. Today, I’m excited to share our 2024 Annual Report and audio highlights to celebrate the impact we’ve achieved together:

PRX Annual Report 2024

This year, PRX’s reach extended to virtually every corner of America:

Our broadcast shows reached 99% of the U.S.

PRX podcasts were downloaded more than 550 million times.

The PRX Dovetail publishing platform supports more than 400 shows from 124 organizations and 33 public radio stations.

But numbers tell only part of the story. What matters most is how we’re fulfilling the promise of public media outlined in the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967: encouraging creative risks and serving diverse audiences that commercial media often overlooks.

For two decades, PRX has been at the forefront of change in the audio industry — building the technology and community-centered infrastructure that enables and supports the people making the most engaging, poignant, and innovative audio available. Since our founding, PRX has put more than $140 million directly into the hands of thousands of creators, allowing them to make the audio that drives their passion and never dictating the content they produce.

PRX provides a critical service to local public radio stations around the country, providing high-quality programming at subsidized rates, including intrepid, in-depth journalism through shows like The World, Left, Right & Center, and Reveal. We continue to advance our technology platforms to protect listener privacy, while ensuring creator success. And we champion emerging voices supporting their artistic, technical, and professional success — some of which is reflected in the prodigious awards PRX programming has received this year.

We believe in innovation in service of the public good. In an era where commercial media increasingly chases clicks over substance, your support has allowed PRX to take a different path. We’ve maintained our commitment to supporting creative risks in storytelling, expanding access to diverse voices and perspectives, and developing technology that supports access to public information and podcast innovation.

As we enter 2025, we know the media landscape will continue to face extraordinary challenges. Commercial pressures threaten journalistic independence, while digital giants reshape how stories reach audiences. But with supporters like you, PRX continues to carve out protected space where meaningful storytelling can thrive.

Your continued partnership makes this work possible. Every dollar you invest supports our mission to ensure that public media remains vibrant, diverse, and accessible to all.

With gratitude,

Kerri Hoffman

We invite you to view our full annual report and listen to our 2024 audio highlights.

“Division Street Revisited” Podcast Inspired by Studs Terkel to Launch January 27 from Pulitzer-winning journalist Mary Schmich, Melissa Harris, and PRX

WBEZ Chicago will also air the series. It will feature Terkel’s “Division Street: America” recordings and new interviews with descendants of Chicagoans in the book.

Executive Producer Melissa Harris and Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Schmich announced the Jan. 27, 2025, release of Division Street Revisited, a seven-part podcast series that builds on Studs Terkel’s first book of oral history chronicling life in the 1960s.

Division Street Revisited will launch on all major podcast platforms, distributed by public media organization PRX. PRX also will make episodes available to public radio stations nationwide. In addition, WBEZ Chicago will air the series on Mondays, starting January 27.

This is the first time Terkel’s Division Street book recordings will be broadcast since the Library of Congress digitized them in late 2023.

Division Street Revisited

The book contains interviews with 71 uncelebrated people about their fears and hopes for themselves, their families and the country. Through interviews with their descendants, the podcast will trace the lives of seven people in the book: A Black public school janitor; a Lithuanian tavern owner; an Appalachian mother of 15; a closeted gay actor; a Native American activist; a Black labor leader; and a prominent white woman in Chicago’s high society.

“But what happened to those people? To their descendants? To their dreams?” Schmich said. “We created this podcast because we wanted to find out, and because the stories told by these individuals help us reflect on our own families and histories, our own hopes and fears for the country.”

A new edition of the 1967 book, with a foreword by Schmich, is available now from The New Press, which holds the rights to Terkel’s books. A weekly, seven-part listening club will launch over Zoom Wednesday, February 5 in partnership with the Chicago History Museum, Old Town School of Folk Music, Facing History & Ourselves, and Chicago Public Library.

Each of the episodes and corresponding listening club will have a focus: civil rights, immigration, work, poverty, LGBTQ+ rights, and the evolving lives of women. All of the stories, in different ways, explore the complexities of family.

“Studs Terkel is a critical figure in understanding the history of audio storytelling,” said Jason Saldanha, Chief Operating Officer at PRX. “We’re proud to help bring his work to more listeners. Melissa Harris and Mary Schmich are not only thoughtful stewards of Terkel’s contributions, but exceptional storytellers delivering new insights.”

Schmich, who writes and narrates the series, was a columnist for the Chicago Tribune from 1992 to 2021 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2012. Harris was a business columnist at the Tribune from 2009 to 2015 and previously worked at The Baltimore Sun and Orlando Sentinel.

Joining Schmich and Harris on the Division Street Revisited production team is Bill Healy, part of a team that won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting and Peabody Award; former Chicago Tribune associate managing editor for metro news Mark Jacob, who has authored nine books on history; former WBEZ editor Cate Cahan; music director and composer Chris Walz; associate producer and dialogue editor Chijioke Williams; and sound designer Libby Lussenhop.

Funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, M. Harris & Co., the Field Foundation of Illinois, the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, the Susan H. Schwartz Charitable Trust, and Debra D. Schwartz. Both the Chicago History Museum and the Studs Terkel Radio Archive at WFMT have licensed historical audio for the production. Production support provided by WBEZ and Chicago Public Media.

“Our search for descendants has sent us around the country — and that’s part of the story: Americans move a lot,” Harris said. “We’ve gone to Denver, Phoenix, New York City, Kentucky, and the Winnebago Reservation in Nebraska. These stories offer listeners a chance to meet Americans they might not otherwise meet, learn about places they wouldn’t otherwise know.”

Division Street Revisited

About PRX

Celebrating more than 20 years as a nonprofit public media company, PRX works in partnership with leading independent creators, organizations, and stations to bring meaningful audio storytelling into millions of listeners’ lives. To me, at the heart of that conversation is a recognition of podcasting as a powerful medium. It can change minds, hearts, the course of people’s lives…

The power of audio storytelling changed the course of my life. I came into this industry quite young and I’ve since dedicated my career to supporting independent audio producers. While going the independent route isn’t easy, it’s where I believe creators can do their best work for our collective benefit.

Others have also noticed the power of podcasting —

Every year, as listenership grows, more monied players from the larger media world (and beyond) enter the fold, buying and selling each other up left and right.

But Radiotopia has a different vision for the future, and who media should and can serve.

Two recent podcasts brought to audiences in part with listener support

When we started the podcast network 10 years ago, we wanted to create a vibrant, diverse ecosystem respecting creators and listeners alike. We had this simple but powerful idea: independent audio makers could go further together than they could on their own. By joining forces, we could help each other reach more listeners, and we would partner with those passionate listeners to make it all happen.

Thanks to your donations along the way, we’ve done just that. Radiotopia is a place where creators own their work, set their own terms, and tell stories that captivate them — stories you love to listen to.

It’s a microcosm of the world I want to live in, a beautiful reminder of what we can accomplish together when we decide something creative and innovative should exist in the world. But this only happens when you stand by us.

Your donation to Radiotopia is much more than just financial support. It’s a vote for a fundamentally democratic approach to audio.

It’s you saying, “I love [insert your favorite Radiotopia podcast] and I want it to continue to exist.”

If our shows have helped you think about the world differently, learn something new, or feel comforted during difficult times — then will you donate or renew your support today?

Thanks for listening,

Audrey Mardavich, executive producer of Radiotopia

Radiotopia Managing Producer Yooree Losordo and Radiotopia Executive Producer Audrey Mardavich

About Radiotopia from PRX

Created in 2014, Radiotopia from PRX is the first network of its kind.
