A promise

We made a stop at Jakar for lunch and toilet break when we drove back to Kapit last month. After spending 4 nights in Kapit, we headed back to Kuching on the 18th. We tried to avoid the weekend jam and have quicker ferry waiting time, so our decision to drive back on a Friday.

Jay did not followed us back then. He wanted to spent some more days there with his grandma. He followed hubby's brother and family back to Kuching a day before Christmas.

We made a promise to stop by Jakar again on our drive back as we needed to get some frozen sio bee from this coffee shop.

Sarikei Jakar Shumai, aptly named. Other than sio bee, they served meals and sold few frozen varieties.

We reached Jakar before 9am so we had our brunch there. Of course its famous sio bee was a must-have!

RM1 each. Big and filling. My sis kept asking me to get some for her, so I bought a pack of 10 for her.

Hubby ordered its fried noodle while the rest of us went for fried mee hoon.

We enjoyed our brunch very much. The noodles were fried to perfection. I loved my fried meehoon.

As for our loots, we bought these frozen packs home. Sio bee, lap cheong, fishballs and ngoh hiang. And a pack of baked spring chicken which I cooked on the Boxing Day. Quite nice but the tang quai and Chinese herbs were too strong to my liking.

We finished up the Chinese sausage and ngoh hiang for dinner on Winter Solstice and another evening. Both were pretty nice, wished we have bought more!

Few packs of sio bee for my family and a pack for my neighbour who helped to look after our house. We will definitely back to this coffee shop if we were on the road again. However it would not be that soon. Maybe when the Pan Borneo is fully completed and the bridges in Batang Lupar and Pusa are done (if they are to proceed with the bridges).

Their version

On 2nd morning in Kapit, we went to this coffee shop for breakfast.

I liked the look of it. A little, old corner shop with vibrant colour. Kong Hua Cafe was the name of this shop.

While waiting for our food, I took shots of the stuff in the shop.

One part of the shop

One big boiling pot

Old switch board

Cupboard

On the table

Don't you feel like you are back to the past?? Feel like the time has stopped and everything remaining the same in the past.

Hubby insisted me to try their toast so we ordered a set to try.

A Kaya and Peanut butter toast!! Tasty. I took one while Jan had the other half.

Their kampua was finally here. Black soy for hubby while the others had the plain kampua.

As for me, I tried their version of Sarawak laksa. A very unusual for me as they added innard in it. The broth wasn't the typical Sarawak laksa; more of the laksa curry to me.

Did I enjoy it?? Not really. Not the typical Sarawak laksa. Even the broth tasted different. Well, at least I got to taste Sarawak laksa in Kapit this round. Better have a round of Sarawak laksa in Kuching soon to satisfy my craving.

The market place

(First of all, I am wishing all my blogger friends and readers A Happy New Year. May 2021 be a much better year for everyone!!)

Kapit market is a place to visit when you are in Kapit. You may find interesting stuff, jungle produces, exotic meats and something that only can be found in Kapit itself.

I always liked to visit the market place when I was back here, so this round was no exception. The only problem may be the parking. Not easy to find parking nearby and one may need to walk far.

After our breakfast, we walked further down to Market Teresang and nearby stalls to digest our food and feed our eyes with what the market had to offer. Indeed, it never failed us.

Some photos I took while we were there and also an old Chinese temple next to it.

Semah fishes

Wild boar

Kasam pork

Kasam fish

Civet cat??

We bought a container of kasam fish for my mum. This seller was well known as her kasam was good and she packed her kasam well in air tight container. My mum never tried fish made into kasam before. She used to take pork kasam in the past. I passed over the kasam to her on Monday. Hope she like it.

Next morning

The next morning, we went to the hawker centre for breakfast.

8 something in the morning. Luckily we were able to find a parking right in front of the centre.

I came for the fried roti telur, a local's favourite. Crispy and delicious big piece of roti telur.  A must-have when visiting this small town.

We also ordered a plate of roti kosong for Jamie to try. Rounder piece compared to a squarer roti telur.

Sweet sambal and slightly spicy curry dippings to go with the roti. RM11 for 2 plates of roti telur and 1 roti kosong.

Usually we came for roti telur everytime we were back to Kapit but this round, the boys also get to taste the kampua from one of the stalls. Rm3.50 for this kampua.

Hubby had this fried noodle for RM4. Look like Foochow version of fried noodle with slices of liver and meats.

First dinner

Continue my post on my short family holiday in Kapit.

We were hungry when we entered Kapit on Monday evening. So we headed straight to this coffee shop which was a minute drive from my in-laws' house.

Hubby ordered 4 dishes for our dinner. First was this soft tofu mixed vegetable dishes.

Then stir fried midin which was alright but big portion.

The sweet and sour soup was tasty. Or maybe we were hungry so everything tasted nice.

They have the deep fried pork trotter so we had one as well. Big trotter!! But it was nice; skin was crispy and meat wasn't too hard and dry.

There was another dish which was onion omelette but I did not take shot of it. RM150 plus drinks for our first dinner in Kapit.

Back for the Christmas

We went to The Spring mall on Sunday, a day before we drove back to Kapit. We were back to the mall for the Christmas decoration. The last time we were here was last December as well, a day before we flew for our China holiday.

I love to visit The Spring especially during the festive season, where their decoration is amazing and breath-taking.

This year, I guess the concept was a White Christmas with the white snowy patches.

After spending time taking shots and admiring the decoration, we went to Ta Kiong supermarket for a quick look and shopping. Then we walked over to the Food Bazaar for lunch.

No, I did not ordered anything for myself. Hubby took the initiative to order for both of us while the kids bought themselves meal from Sugarbun.

Some dessert before we shared this Nasi Arab lamb. First time tasting Nasi Arab. And I liked the taste. The lamb was so tender. Bitg of us enjoyed it very much. Around RM17. 90, hubby can't remember the exact price.

It was wonderful to be back to The Spring after a year absence. The kids especially were jovial as able to come out and enjoy the best season of the year amidst the current pandemic situation.
