Kajaki (2014)
It's hard to watch at times but it's definitely worth watching.
I've seen quite a bit hard-to-watch-movies. But in most of those cases it were fictional movies like The Human Centipede, Hostel, Saw or A Serbian Movie. But with Kajaki it's different because it tells a true story. So your mind is set up to watch this movie as it was real. And I have to admit I was sometimes physically unwell during some scenes. They are hard to watch, so if you have a weak stomach I wouldn't recommend you to watch some scenes. But about the movie itself it is a brilliant movie. Certainly one of the most captivating war movies I've seen. It's not about we are the good ones and the others are the bad ones. It's about the devastating consequences of mines. Most of the movie is shot at the same place but the intensity of the stress moments gave me all those emotions. The absurdity of wars, the footsoldiers being seen just as expendable losses, it's sometimes hard to conceive. The acting was brilliant. It was like being with them in war territory. Kajaki is a movie I won't easily forget. It's one of those movies I will talk about among friends for a long time.
Sleight (2016)
It has it's flaws but it isn't that bad
Besides a couple things that do feel inaccurate like the nonchalance of the main drug dealer the movie is worth a watch. But it's those little things that doesn't make Sleight a great movie. If a drug dealer would act like that he would be caught the same day. But other than that the story is entertaining. Jacob Latimore did a good job with his performance. The tricks are maybe a bit over the top, certainly at the end, but I guess it's fine being a fictional story. I don't really like magic anyways, unless you explain me the trick afterwards. But I'm not saying it's the best movie ever in this genre. But certainly better than all those negative reviewers wants to make you believe.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
The bad thing about this movie are the bad reviews on here.
I don't get why there are so many bad reviews about this movie. It's certainly not that bad. Some reviewers write this is the worst movie they ever saw. That is just a joke. It means that you didn't watch more than ten movies in your life or that you just have a terrible taste of movies. I won't say the acting will be award winning but for this movie it doesn't matter. You know a movie like this one will never win any awards, that's not the point. The point is to be entertained and that is exactly what I was with Kong: Skull Island, entertained. The special effects and CGI's are clearly well done, way better than most of the movies in this same genre. The story isn't actually that bad, like some people wants to make us believe. It's easy to follow, nothing special, but I didn't expect anything else of a movie with this theme. My question is, why are people going to watch a movie like this if it's not their genre of movie? Just stay home and watch something else instead and stop bothering us with your false reviews. Kong is worth a watch if you just want to relax a bit.
Kill Switch (2017)
First Person Shooters, the worst thing ever created in movies.
I think the only people that can like this movie are full-time gamers. Fans of the First Person Shooter games. Because Kill Switch is just like watching a person playing that game. I do like playing a game every now and then but I don't like watching somebody play because there is no thrill in that. Neither did I like this movie. It's taking boring to another level. I had to fight several times to not fall asleep. The story is not the worst, it's the execution that is really bad. The CGI's are also poorly done. A game looks actually better than this. About the acting is not much to say. The so-called star of the movie just appears in the beginning, for the rest it's just what he sees that you will see. Why they still shoot movies like that is a mystery to me. It never worked and it will never work. Name one movie that has been shot like that that has success. There are just none.
Dirty Pretty Things (2002)
Good story with good actors.
Dirty Pretty Things might not have a huge budget but it's an enjoyable movie to watch. It's of course fiction but you could easily look at this story as some refugees have to live it. Maybe not that extreme but that some get exploited is for sure. The fear of being sent back makes people do things they shouldn't have to do or want to do. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Audrey Tautou are the main characters and they both were really good. Why Audrey Tautou that is French has to play a Turkish refugee is a mystery to me, but she could easily pass as a Turk in this movie. The rest of the cast was also good, making this movie an easy watch. A good story, good actors and an interesting cinematography. Whar else is there to ask?
Foxcatcher (2014)
Never heard of this story and that was a bonus
Foxcatcher is a long movie but it never gets boring and that's something. As a Belgian I never heard of this story so for me it was all a surprise. I like movies based on a true story, certainly one like this one. The make-up crew should also get credits because what they did to Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum was very well done. It's because Steve Carrell as a specific voice that I recognized him immediately but with his changed physics I could have been fooled. He plays a really annoying character, one of those rich guys that thinks you can buy anybody or anything. But he did a very good job playing that arrogant prick. Channing Tatum looks like he came out straight of a cavern. He also did a good job, like all the rest of the cast. The story is interesting to watch and the end was surprising to me. I'm not a big fan of the wrestling sport but for this story it doesn't matter if you like it or not. Certainly worth a watch.
Colossal (2016)
I thought it was going to be good, but it's quite the opposite.
Well the least I can say is that I'm absolutely not impressed by this movie. The story is beyond ridiculous that you wonder how they came up with that. Not that I don't like some strange stories or so, on the contrary, but this one is really too stupid. And it's not even well executed. About the cast you would think that with Jason Sudeikis and Anne Hathaway you would have some kind of good acting but even that was too much to ask. The acting was just average, nothing that you will ever remember. But the biggest issue is just the story, that's a fact. If I were you I would never start watching Colossal because it will be a waste of your time. There are way better movies than this one.
Distance Between Dreams (2016)
Surfers and non-surfers will like this documentary.
Did I ever surf? No! Will I ever surf? Certainly not! But did I enjoy this documentary about surfing? I certainly did! The photography is just stunning. I can't imagine how many hours of footage they had to shoot to get those stunning shots. With Distance Between Dreams you just get a bit over an hour of just surfing. You follow the amazing surfing stunts from the four Walsh brothers. It's not really about the narrating voice explaining the whole surfing scene that did it to me, even though it was interesting. To me it was just about men defying the power of nature. Giant waves are really impressive to watch and here they are shot like you are riding that wave yourself, without getting wet or risking your life. So even if you never surfed before this documentary is worth a watch.
The Sense of an Ending (2017)
Weak first hour, better second half.
I have a few problems with this movie and that's why I just rate it as an average movie. One of my issues is that the movie is way too long. It could easily have been done half on hour shorter. Then the movie would have been better. Now the first 45 minutes are just boring to watch. I thought the movie was going nowhere at one point and yawning was the only thing I did for almost an entire hour. The best part of the movie is the end part. That was worth watching. You can't really blame Jim Broadbent for anything, he did his best trying to make it an enjoyable movie to watch. Too bad the beginning was so boring, because the revealing of the mystery was good. But that's just not enough to make it a good movie.
The Hit (1984)
A good example of a highly overrated movie.
Because I saw the high rating on here I gave this movie a shot. Normally I'm not very keen on older movies because most of the time they don't age well. The Hit is certainly not an exception on this rule, on the contrary, I don't think I even would have liked it in 1984. I thought it would be interesting to see a younger Tim Roth, that I do like now, but his beginning career was not a great start. Even John Hurt didn't impress me. The acting is all quite mediocre. Maybe it's due to the story but you can't just blame it on that. The extras are sometimes also really bad. I'm disappointed in this movie. It's clearly highly overrated.
