I enjoy watching movies and playing video games so I review a lot here. This is what my scores indicate:

10-excellent flick or game, very little to nothing I find wrong with it.
9 -really good flick or game that is almost excellent but may have one or two flaws
8 -good like 9 however the flaws stand out more or it did not generate the excitement I was looking for
7 -pretty good for the most part the movie or game was enjoyable, but along with flaws it may lack plot development or something to that effect
6 -okay chances are it has a boring stretch or something that knocks the film down a peg or two, I might recommend this movie or game, but will say beware
5 -a neither good nor bad flick. Just enough good to keep it from being a bit unwatchable and just enough bad to make it something I probably would not want to see again unless it was a horror movie
4 -for the most part a movie I don't care for, but contains some good scenes or something to that effect, also a rather good score for me to give to a bad horror movie that kept me entertained because it was so bad
3 -usually when they start ranking here or lower they become boring or really low budget or unplayable if a game. it only gets a 3 because it might contain a shining diamond in the rough such as maybe a good performance
2 -usually the only thing making this type of movie from being a one is a good death or perhaps a good nude scene
1 -bad and boring and something I will not watch again unless it is to make fun of it

Mad Max (2015)

Enter Max's world and become the road warrior!

22 November 2016

I got this game not sure what to expect as it was a game based on a movie and those usually turn out rather poor. However, I have always wanted to play a video game where I was Mad Max so I decided to give it a shot. Seeing as how I would always try to recreate his character in other games like, Fallout 3, I figured why not play the game where you are him and that features vehicles. In Fallout 3, you can get the character close to looking like Max, but there are no cool cars. Well, I played through this game and have to say I rather enjoyed it, more than I was expecting considering all the harsh criticisms I had heard about it. Not perfect, by any means, but the game does what I wanted it to and that is place the gamer into Max's world of chaos and anarchy. It is also a very lengthy world as it took me a long time to get through this one, but if you're not trying to complete all the tasks as you are going and only do story objectives it can probably be done somewhat quickly. The game could use a few more things to do considering the size of the world, but still offers a good number of things to do. You can drive around, raid enemy fortresses and scavenge for scrap to create the ultimate car for the wasteland!

The story has Max, losing his car and his shotgun right from the get go and fighting a hulking man named Lord Scrotus. Max soon finds himself in the middle of nowhere with no car and no water, but soon finds a man named Chum who tells Max that Max is the man to drive a car that he wishes to craft...the Magnum Opus. So Max drives this man's buggy to his hideout and soon goes on the search for a body for this new vehicle; however, Chum can only get his hands on a V6 engine and Max needs a V8 to cross the plains of silence so Max must find his way through the wasteland controlled by Lord Scrotus and various other factions, befriend camps of people not quite as crazy as the wandering gangs or the war boys and make his way to Gastown to complete his vehicle all while making a name for himself in the wastelands.

The game play is rather fun as you have hand to hand combat which was fun and consisted of countering, using knives and blasting away with Max's shotgun. Then there is driving where you can simply try to outrun the enemy or ploy right through them! The driving was good for the most part, as through most of the game you are in the middle of the wasteland; however, the Gastown race which is near the end was a very frustrating affair as you are placed in a race with horrendous corners and turns and that section of the game is the only one that had me cursing up a storm! Other than that section the driving was not too bad. Another minor complaint is the fact they were a bit to generous with the water and gas. When you first take control of Max, finding water and shells was difficult and made it more interesting as you would hold back using your gun or try not to use to much water. Instead of this being the norm, once you build up the ally camps, you get all the water and shells you need and gas too! Just made the game a bit less challenging. Still, overall it was fun just driving through the wasteland and ramming enemies who were parked alongside the road!

So, yes, I found this game to be quite fun and entertaining. I thought the ending was a bit of a downer as Max usually rights wrongs before driving off alone and into the nothingness, but for the most part the game got the tones of the movie right. I would have liked to have heard the theme from Road Warrior play though as that would have been cool and maybe an enemy or ally from the films would have been cool too. Perhaps a base run by Lord Humongous? For a game based on a movie though they did a great job of crafting a huge world where you could explore and make the wasteland your playground of blood chaos and sorrow!

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Chaos, anarchy and zombies! Welcome to the Dawn of the Dead!

1 November 2016

This film is the second of Romero's "Dead" trilogy; granted, he did make a few other zombie films after this one: "Land of the Dead", "Diary of the Dead" and "Survival of the Dead", but I do not really count those three as part of his first three dead films. They just seem in a separate world as this series shows us the beginning of the zombies, the zombies taking over and gaining more footing and the end of civilization as we know it as by the last film the zombies outnumber the humans. This is the second film and it shows the structure we humans have established beginning to crumble. This one is also the most action oriented of the three "Dead" films. I would say the first is the most horror oriented and the third has elements of horror, action and science fiction. Of the original three, this is my favorite one. It has really cool zombie action and I like the main characters especially Peter and Roger...Fran and Stephen got on my nerves from time to time. The third film would have a myriad of annoying and unlikable characters with the most likable by far being Bub. Bub also happens to be a zombie so that should tell you how they are. That one features some really good zombie action and a better climax than this film though. The climax here almost seems like Romero thought he had to have some zombie munching and could not quite figure out a way to do so seeing as how there were only four main characters and so the ending, while featuring some awesome zombie munching, also seems kind of thrown in as an after thought.

The story has things beginning to break down rapidly as two people working at television station plan to nab the company chopper to try and escape the horror that the city has now become as marshal law is in effect and things are going badly quickly. Two guys who are in a raid of an apartment complex that goes horribly also join the two reporters and there are some tensions at first as they fly through the countryside and witness the growing number of zombies first hand. They soon find a mall with a helicopter landing pad on top of it and decide to stay and rest a bit at first, but then Roger and Peter decide that perhaps they should stay a little longer as the place has everything one could need to survive out the zombie outbreak. They convince Stephen, though Fran is never too on board with the idea as apparently her and Stephen's original plan was to get to Canada. Soon they all work together to try and blockade the mall, lock down the mall and then rid the mall of the zombie infestation. All looks well until the here some people on the radio who do not have the best of intentions.

This one is the most action oriented of the first three films as I have said and I liked the characters in this one more than the other two films as well. The zombie effects are okay and there are some good kills, but both of those two things would be improved upon in the next entry. I am always a bit surprised that the guy playing Roger did not appear in all that many films as he was actually really good. About the only one who would go on to appear in several films is Ken Foree who would appear in a lot of horror films during his career.

So this film is rather good, but it is dated a bit. You watch this film and you are looking at a time capsule of the 70's that is for sure. The fact that they reference the indoor mall makes it seem like that was a relatively new and happening thing thing when these days it is the outdoor malls that thrive more often. I would hate to get stuck in a mall these days as you just could not find the supplies that a mall had back in those days. Not even talking about guns, I am talking about food, tools and several other essential items that just are not going to be in a mall nowadays. Most malls only really have clothing shops so you are not going to survive very long unless you are good at crafting hangers into weapons or eating clothing and converting it to energy! Still, it is a fun ride and a very good zombie film.

Devil Doll (1964)

Before he was projecting things Bryant Haliday liked to bicker with his dummy

29 October 2016

This film was shown on the cult riffing television show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and was most likely the only way I was ever going to see this film about a strange doll and his master. Bryant Haliday plays the ventriloquist/hypnotist in this one and he would also star in the film, "The Projected Man" which would also be lampooned by MST3K and was another film where things just did not turn out so well for him. The poor guy just could not catch a break. The film is not a totally horrible film as many films that are featured on MST3K are, but it is not really that good either. It is a case of rather good premise that really does not live up to its full potential as too many times things that make the film more interesting or would help it be more entertaining are either not really long scenes or left out entirely in lieu of scenes that really go no where and make the film a bit duller than a film featuring a killer ventriloquist dummy should be! How many times did we need to see the female lead in the film in her hospital bed? I would much rather of seen a more backstory on the Great Vorelli or more creepy Hugo stalking the halls.

The story of the film has a man calling himself The Great Vorelli who has a show where he hypnotizes people and then for the finale argues with his ventriloquist dummy and insults it. As bad as this show sounds, it looks a lot more enjoyable than Dr. Carlo Lombardi's act in "She Creature" (another MST3K riffed film). All that guy did was ask his assistant questions and then shout, "The monster is coming!" when the show was losing its steam. In this film a man wants to do a story on the Great Vorelli and gets his fiancé or girlfriend to volunteer which turns out to be a big mistake. As Vorelli puts the moves on this girl, the newspaper man gets a strange visit, not from the Great Vorelli, but from Hugo, the ventriloquist doll!

This was a rather funny episode of MST3K as it was just a good movie to work with though it was not necessarily a bad film. Granted, William Sylvester was kind of bad in it (the newspaper guy). His reactions just are not very good. When a ventriloquist dummy walks into his room he responds in a way that is less shocked and more like, "Why are you here at this hour?" Several times he seems to not react well to what is going on around him and MST3K calls him out on it. The jokes about the act and the whole arguing are good as well. The bumps are pretty funny too with the highlight coming when Tom becomes a toaster strudel.

So it is not a super terrible film, but it just did not work for me. Bryant Haliday does a fine job in this one as he did as Paul in the Projected man, but William Sylvester was very bland. Surprising considering he was the more famous of the two men. I kind of wonder if the orange hair that Haliday sported in the "Projected Man" was his natural color because if so, then this film would have been thoroughly more disturbing in color! In the end, I cannot help but feel sorry for Bryant Haliday. In this film he ends up breaking up with his partner and then he would move on to projecting things and that would end up even worse for him!

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

It's a shame this didn't do better as we could have gotten an original Halloween movie every year if it had

25 October 2016

In 1981 John Carpenter gave us Halloween II which in the end killed off both Myers and Loomis and would soon begin work on a new Halloween tale that would not feature the bleached William Shatner mask clad figure and instead bring us a new horror for Halloween, Halloween III: Season of the Witch! Had this one been super successful there would have been another horror film released probably the next year featuring a new horror story. Unfortunately, this would not come to pass as so many people could not wrap their little minds around the concept that Myers was not in this film in other than a clip of the original film that was stupidly placed in this film (more on that later). So while the film was not a flop at all, it was met with such a backlash that they scrapped the idea of releasing a new and original Halloween film every year and thus the cycle of making the same film again and again featuring the same killer would begin anew with Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers because having both your eyes shot out and being completely engulfed in flames and being burnt to the bone is not enough to stop him! Though one wonders how an old man survived the explosion as well and thus a string of bad sequels would be made making Jason look a lot better as his films were never quite as bad as Halloween 4, 5, 6, H2O and Resurrection were. Seriously, people complain about the Zombie films, but at least his films felt like big budget films while the Halloween sequels I just mentioned seemed like either direct to video crap or a desperate attempt to be another Scream (H2O). Do not get me wrong, this film was not that good either! I like to say it is not as bad as some claim, but not as good as others claim either.

The story had promise as it has a man being chased right at the beginning by a strange person in a suit and tie. He manages to escape said man and make his way to a gas station where he finds help and ends up in a hospital where he clutches a strange mask. A doctor there provides assistance (Tom Atkins) and later another person in a suit comes in and kills him and then goes to the parking lot and emulates himself. The old man's daughter is soon there seeking answers and Tom Atkins character wants to know what is going on too. They begin investigating and the trail soon leads them to Santa Mira and the Silver Shamrock corporation. Seems there is a deadly secret being kept dealing with the strange masks they are producing.

I enjoy the premise, but they did some things that really doomed this film. One of the main ones was having Halloween as a movie in this film. They should have never reduced Myers to a fictional character in a fictional movie! In fact, they should have made it as if he had lived in this world instead. I think that would have taken care of that complaint as it is foolish to do what they did. I also did not like aspects of the film, mainly the ending as it seemed way to science fiction and the finale where Tom gets the upper hand just should have been a bit more graphic. The deaths range from really good (the woman playing with the chip) to really disappointing (the drill scene). There are also not that many deaths going on and I was getting tired of seeing Tom Atkins putting the moves on his much younger costar.

So I am not a huge super fan of this film, nor do I hate it simply because Michael Myers is not in it. Seriously folks, Halloween was around long before the first Halloween film was released so yes, there can be stories of the day not associated with him. Heck, the only time I see anyone even wearing his costume are workers in haunted houses, most dress up in slutty tire outfits and super hero costumes. There was plenty of room for other horrific monsters to come out to play, but sadly, we get the same dude doing the same thing thanks to the rejection of this film. If the series had continued perhaps Michael could have even returned, but instead of the one we got where he comes back with both his eyes and only minor burns we could have gotten his skeletal remains coming out of the grave! Unfortunately, people just do not want different and while this movie is not great by any means, at least it was different.

The Projected Man (1966)

If there is one thing I've learned from movies, teleportation devices are dangerous!

25 October 2016

I enjoyed this film as an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I am doubting I would have seen it otherwise, as I do not recall ever seeing this one play on television. A film that shares a premise with a couple of other films where a scientist is trying to do something grand, but instead of a rousing success story, the movie turns into a horror as something fails in spectacular fashion causing someone to get deformed, fused with something or have half their face looking quite icky, but on the plus side gain an ability to electrocute people so that they may take revenge on all those they perceive wronged them! Not a totally bad film as they did a wonderful job on the makeup, just takes a while for things to really get going and so for the most part during the first portion of the film we are treated to the wonderful world of grants, appropriation and sabotage. The film is already half over before we have the title character terrorizing the city and it kind of still moves slowly.

The story has a woman arriving at an institution where a scientist is working on developing a device that can be used for teleportation. In fact, he has succeeded many times transporting inanimate objects from one point to the other and his only problem is doing the same with live subjects. Of course, the fact he was able to successfully transport inanimate objects should have been more than enough to secure funding for life, the people in this film seem to act as if this is not that big a deal. Kind of perplexing. Oh wow, you can transport things from one point to the other instantaneously...cool, wait, not animals. Loser! Well there is some sabotaging going on as soon the scientist who is played by the same guy who played the great Vorelli in "Devil Doll" decides to do something extreme to prove he has achieved success! The only way he can fail is if the other two scientist who are assisting him run into the room and yell, "Stop" right in the middle of the experiment...and they do, D'oh! He is transformed into a maniacal disfigured man who can touch people and kill them!

This made for a very funny episode of MST3K as it is one of those films that has enough good in it so that their riffing does not have to completely carry the day. I would like to see the film without their aid as there seemed to be things that were not rectified on screen such as the mysterious man who seemed to be the one behind sabotaging the experiment. Most of the film though seems to be intact as the film only ran 77 minutes so most of it was likely featured. A lot of good jokes in this episode as I enjoyed Sheila in her underpants and the joke about being willing to give up half their face to break into drugstores and steal rubber gloves...just a very good episode.

So the movie may have been good with a bit more work, it still made a fine episode of MST3K. I kind of wonder if Bryant Haliday's hair was naturally that orange color, if so it is a shame that "Devil Doll" was in black and white as that would somehow of made that film a lot creepier! This one had a great effect as Haliday as Professor Steiner's face was positively grotesque! I have seen things made a lot more recently than this film that did not look half as good as the makeup job they did here and it is the highlight of this film that is a bit strange as once again, shouldn't more people be shocked and in awe of something that can teleport stuff?

Head of the Family (1996)

Not at the head of its class...

24 October 2016

This film was brought to us by Charles Band who did a lot of horror movies back in the day. I do believe he was the person behind Full Moon studios which brought us many horror films, some good and a lot of them bad. One thing that can be said about his films though whether good or bad is that they were generally very short! This one was actually one of the longer films I have watched that he did and it was not horribly bad, but it was not good either. Basically, this film had a lot of talking and a lot of sex and nudity, but not a lot in the way of horror. I was not quite sure what to expect when I chose to watch it as I had it on one of those sets of DVDs that has a bunch of other films on it, but I sure as heck was not expecting this. I do not know if that is a good thing or not as I just watched this thing unfold and all I was getting was sex scene, talk, sex scene talk and maybe someone getting punched in the face to change things up. The positive about this formula is that the lead girl was super cute and another girl featured was also rather attractive, but I think the Loretta character was way more attractive than the Ernestina character though Ernestina was the one who was supposed to be super sexy and irresistible.

The story has three rather zoned out people to start and then flashes to a restaurant/store where an obnoxious biker who is apparently hated by most people in the town is making deals and being completely oblivious that his wife is having sex with the guy who owns the place. One night while he and the woman are continuing their affair they witness a strange roadblock and the guy investigates only to discover that there are some strange happenings at the house of the three zoned out people. He soon hatches a plan to use this strange family to take care of the woman's husband; unfortunately, he gets a bit too greedy and even after the family takes care of the husband he continues to blackmail the family until the head of the family devises a plan to get the man into his custody where he intends to torture the man for a while, but the guy who seems so stupid seems to somehow be able to counter the super smart head every step of the way.

One of the reasons that this film kind of doesn't work is the fact that the lead guy does seem to be able to easily outmaneuver the super intelligent man who lives within the house that is a lot bigger on the inside than the out as it looks like a large house, but not large enough to have a fairly large basement and sport an auditorium. Another problem is the fact that most of the movie is just talk, they discuss things a lot and then there is the sex, which is good because the lead girl is so cute and she is more than willing to take it all off more so than the one that is supposed to be super powered sexy. If this were a porn, it may be okay for it to follow this formula, but it is a horror film...granted it is one of those Full Moon horror comedies. Not going to say the comedy fell completely flat, but the horror was nonexistent. The payoff at the end sucks too. It was not terrible by any means, but it certain was not at the head of its class either.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Kind of a mixture of 70 and 80's horror films

20 October 2016

Clu Gulager kicks butt as Burt and Linnea Quiqley heats things up! This zombie film kind of fuses two eras of horror together for a very fun zombie film and the only zombie series that I know of that really has zombies chomping on brains, yet the film had to have made an impact because a lot of people will say that zombies eat brains, when in most zombie films they simply eat people. How is this a merger you ask? Mainly in the way it was cast. In the 70's, a lot of horror films would feature a notable actor or two in a prominent role. They may of not been an A list star, but it was someone a person would recognize. In the 80's the casts became young stars who were usually not very recognizable. This movie features both sets and they kind of do their own thing until the middle of the film where the two groups meet and clash for the remainder of the film. The film also was one of three zombie films released during 1985 and I will say that this one had the best cast, I would say Day of the Dead had the best zombie effects and action and I would say Reanimator had a bit better visuals than Return and a better cast than Day. This one and Reanimator would feature humor, while Day is the bleak film of the trio. All three I find good and I have a hard time picking which one I do enjoy more.

The story has a couple of guys in a medical warehouse where one of them is showing the new guy the ropes. While doing some paper work, Freddie (the new guy) asks Frank what is the strangest thing he had ever seen. Frank tells him of a story about how Night of the Living Dead was based on true events and proceeds to show him some tanks in the basement of the building that contain dead corpses. Unfortunately, the young guy then asks if the canisters could leak, which the older gent then says, "No way" before hitting the canister and it proceeds to shoot out its contents. This fog envelopes the warehouse and revives some of the dead objects within including butterflies, split dogs and a cadaver! The two men lose consciousness before reviving and calling the owner of the warehouse and after a few humorous incidents, they take the reanimated objects to Ernie, the local mortician to burn the items which sends fumes into the air and revive the dead! Caught up in all this is Freddie's girlfriend and I am going to guess his friends as she sticks out like a sore thumb. Soon the two groups meet up and must try to work together to try and survive the zombie onslaught!

The film starts out with a lot of comedy in it, but as it goes on it becomes a bit darker and soon nearly all the humor is gone. The sequel to this film would keep the humor all the way through it and it was pretty much less of a sequel and more of a spoof of this film. The cast in that one was not as good either as sure James Karen would return as would Thom Matthews in what is essentially same roles, but the one who made this one great was Clu Gulagar. Linnea was good too, but mainly for that one dance sequence in the cemetery and for still having a great bod even as a zombie. Though I still say the female zombie from Junk was the hottest zombie as she still had a cute face too.

This is a favorite of mine and memorable as I actually saw this film at the theater when it came out. My parents and I actually saw a trailer for this one while watching the low budget, but still good, zombie film, Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. It almost looked like it had the same premise, but this one turned out vastly different. I still remember my mother attempting to cover my eyes during Linnea's dance. The tone is a bit uneven as it does start out in a more humorous way and it does get rather dark towards the end, but overall it was a very fun zombie film. The zombies looked good in this one at times with the tar man being the highlight as well as the blond one that they talked too, but a lot of the zombies in this one you could tell were just people smeared with mud. That is okay, as with this one it is not the zombies as much as the cast and their reactions that make this one.

Waxwork (1988)

Finally watched this 1988 horror comedy!

17 October 2016

I have to say I rather enjoyed this film; however, that being said I actually enjoyed the sequel to this one more. It may be because I actually saw the sequel first or more likely that film featured Bruce Campbell and he was absolutely hilarious in it! Still, this one was good too, just not quite as good. I felt some of the scenes felt a bit too rushed, while others went on a bit too long. It is by no means an anthology film, but it does feature different sectors as it were. Took me forever to finally sit down and watch the whole thing, like a number of other films, it was one of those that I caught a piece here and there, but never sat down and watched the entire film and as I said, it was pretty good. There were numerous stars in it and it has David Warner who kind of reminds me of a John Carradine type actor in that he is a good actor and he appeared in good movies, but once in a while he would appear in a totally horrific film. This is not the case for this one, as this film has some good points, but it still is not a big Hollywood release either. He makes a fine villain for this one. Zak Galligan of Gremlins fame is the lead, and he is okay in it, but he kind of played almost two characters in this one. Not sure why he never appeared in more stuff, he was usually pretty decent in most of the films I saw him in and he was better in the sequel to this one. John Rhys Davis is also in this film, but not for a very prolonged period.

The story has a waxwork open in a very peculiar place in the middle of a neighborhood. As two girls pass it, the owner appears and invites them to a special late night viewing, but he wishes for there to be no more than six people. Well, they go, but this place has a deadly secret as two of the group ends up inside the displays as one seems transported to another world! One of them ends up in a forested area where a deadly werewolf lurks while the female ends up in a vampire's castle. Zak Galligan's character goes to the police when his friends end up not showing up and the police officer does not believe him at first, but there is something about the waxwork that bugs him so he returns only to find himself walking into a display and ending up in a mummy's tomb! The waxwork has a deadly secret and it must be uncovered or it may mean doom for the earth!

So pretty good and it had some rather good gore effects. I enjoyed the vampire setting the best as it was rather good and bloody. I also liked the fact that the police officer in this one actually did not dismiss the possibility that something was wrong with the waxwork. It did a lot of things good, but I still feel the sequel was a bit more superior as it added a few more crazy touches, though this one did a nice job of displaying a lot of classic monsters. I was not to wild about the whole whipping area as there was nothing really that horrific in that area. You had monsters in most and it was kind of a shame we didn't get to see more as there was one featuring pods and another featuring a killer looking baby that may have been a bit more interesting to see play out. Still, overall, it was a nice visit to the waxwork.

The Forgotten (1973)

The basement not as big a factor as the title implies...

11 October 2016

This is a film that if you watch it today and you have seen a more than a couple of horror films, you are going to know exactly what is going on. By the title of the film and by the description on the box I figured out what was going to happen before I even saw a minute of the film, and if it is not obvious then it will be during the first five minutes of the film. There are no real surprises to be had here, suffice to say. It does play out somewhat interestingly in areas and there are a couple of pretty good kills, but it is simply too obvious what is going on and how it is going to play out. I see the original title of this one is apparently, "The Forgotten" and perhaps that would have made for a better title, because as I have said, you read the description for this on and you will probably figure out what is going on or if you do not, you will still know how it is all going to go after you watch about five minutes of it with its title of, "Don't Go Into the Basement". Still, there are a couple of surprises as I was not quite expecting the way it ended and there was even a rather funny scene involving a phone repair guy, so I would say while not a particularly good film, it is not terrible either.

The story has a house for those who are crazy in the middle of nowhere. At this facility, the doctor in charge allows the patients to roam free and employs some very questionable methods to help his patients. A nurse there has had enough as the only one she seems to like is Sam, a man who has the innocence of a child. The others are getting on her nerves and after she is threatened by one of the patients she is ready to leave! The doctor doesn't take this news well, and he takes what is coming to him next even less well as he is hit with an ax. A new nurse is soon seen coming to the place and a new doctor has taken over saying the previous one has been killed. Well the new nurse is quickly warned to leave the place by one of the patients, but she sticks with it, but things begin to unravel quickly as the patients start losing control!

Like I said, it has its moments, but just not enough for me to really say it was an okay film. Some things were cool in it, but at other times things going on were a bit perplexing, such as the new nurse being unable to find the exit to the house. The people being treated did okay for a low budget film my favorite being the super sexed up woman who simply wanted the love of a man and was stuck in a place where the guys all seemed to pass on her despite her being rather attractive. The one dude who would just scream and grab stuff was my least favorite as he just seemed to be doing a stereotypical crazy person. One thing that also surprised me was that during the course of the entire movie, no one told the nurse to no look in the basement...I was kind of expecting that within the first few moments she arrived.

The Mad Monster (1942)

Using your gardener as your test subject results in your garden suffering!

1 October 2016

I saw this film on the cult television riffing show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Basically, this film is yet another take on the Universal classic, The Wolf Man with the only new aspect a mad scientist is the cause behind the terrible creature that roams the area. Not particularly bad, but not really much good in it either as it is very slow moving for a film that clocks in at only 77 minutes. Still, the acting is not too bad in this one and so it is a bit tolerable. Not sure I would care to see this without MST3K, but if I did it would be only to fill in the blanks as they must have cut a lot out of this one to make the episode because they had a short preceding it. In the end though, nothing to out of the ordinary as far as monster movies during its time.

The story has a scientist who is working on a formula to mix the blood of an animal with that of a human being. The animal in question is a wolf and the man in question is the scientist's gardener who apparently believes that if you are a gardener you have no right to question anything your employer tells you to do. The result a wolf man...though it actually looks more like one of the monkeys from planet of the apes with a pair of Dracula novelty teeth. The scientist wishes to sell his creation to the army so that the army can have an army of animal/man hybrids at their disposal, but first he must have his revenge upon the men who criticized his work! That, of course, will be his undoing.

This made for an okay episode of MST3K considering it was a first season episode which I consider their weakest season. They were still feeling their way at this point and it shows. The movie is preceded by a Commando Cody short and I see no reason for the short to be in front of this one. This film is 77 minutes long, that is plenty long enough to fill out an episode of MST3K. Maybe one small short, but this one took up the first block of the episode. Most films that have to have shorts to fill up the first block clock in at under an hour. Still, the jokes are rather good in the film portion of the film and make what would otherwise be a mundane Wolf Man clone into something a bit more humorous to watch.

So, not a great film, but nothing to terribly horrible either. Just kind of a bland film featuring a Wolf Man and a mad scientist. I am sure there were several such films back in the day, in fact, I know there were as several have been showcased on MST3K. The film is a bit uneven too as it seems to take place in several time periods almost. You have the mansion, you have the city and then you have the people living in a swamp that almost seem to be living in a different time period than the rest of the film. In the end though, I say this film would have been better had the monster been just a little bit madder.
