The drama follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community where the shadow of World War II is casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn't feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the women find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world.
I must preface that I'm an American. I am woefully under-educated about much of history so please bear this in mind when I say, from my side of the pond, I love this show!! I couldn't say what anachronisms in any form exist, but what I do see is a group of amazing women on this show, worthy and deserving of having their stories told. How many women have had experiences like they have? The choices, sacrifices women make every day they wake up, without complaint, often deserving of so much more. We see these women making hard choices during this war, but what makes this series so strong is that women sacrifice no matter what, in war or peacetime. This universality, in my opinion, is the heart of Home Fires and the primary reason it should be renewed. Perhaps some aspects are saccharine, but who cares. The show is accessible and fun to watch. I will miss these characters. I'm really glad to have had these two seasons, but as this show teaches us - in more ways than one
- we don't always get what we want (case in point: the cancellation of
the show). I just hope there are more quality shows about women in the future (we are half the world's population. Just sayin'...).
