Storyline
Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty. Amazing Movie! My husband and I saw it yesterday and LOVED IT! I am an American who owns all of Mike Leigh's films. His films are one of a kind! They give you a glimpse into people's lives. Either an historical person or in most of his films he shows us regular everyday people. The cinematography is breathtaking. This movie made me feel as if I had traveled back in time and I actually felt like I was watching Turner go about his day to day life. It was fascinating to me and not just to see his life but to watch how people ate, dressed, partied, spoke and the interworking of their relationships . It also gave us a glimpse into different social classes at that period in time in England. When I came out of the movie I felt as if I had been there with the character at that time. It gave me so much more than any other movie experience has! BRAVO MIKE LEIGH!!!!!!!!
