Baron Manfred von Richthofen is the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in World War I. To him and his companions, air combats are events of sporty nature, technical challenge and honorable acting, ignoring the terrible extent of war. But after falling in love with the nurse Käte, Manfred realizes he is only used for propaganda means. Caught between his disgust for the war, and the responsibility for his fighter wing, von Richthofen sets out to fly again. Written by j
After watching the Red Baron I find even though not being a major star packed Hollywood production It was great.
Being a foreign film and not familiar with previous work of the actors made it even more enjoyable for me by lending more to the characters, as opposed to watching major Hollywood actors from other films that many times seem to detract from the character role or storyline.
This is a story of Manfred Von Richthofen The famous Red Baron a flying ace during WW1 that gives a true perspective of the nobility approach to air war during that time, so unlike the wars that followed...although sometimes loosely factually based it held true to The Knights of the sky theme, This idealism of course was dramatically contrasted by great dynamic dialogue involving romance between the pilot and a well opposed reality grounded nurse. This was not a propaganda or pro war film at all nor a documentary but a really good interpretation of the times that were.
On a technical note there were only a few scenes through the eagerness to create on computer actual air battle action that seemed at times a little too cluttered where the flying formations were a little too close and too fast moving for the time and the air craft, In an effort they tried to fit it all in the screen but in this case less and slower would have been better. Still these scenes could've been left out and this would have still been a great movie. Overall this was well worth my viewing time.
