Elaborate sets and sweeping cinematography the real stars
29 January 2001 | by (Putney, VT) – See all my reviews

Another of those collections of short stories - this time under Max Ophuls direction with three de Maupassant stories of varying lengths and of varying interest. The real stars are the elaborate and justly Oscar nominated Art Direction and the swirling Cinematography that also deserved but did not get a nomination. The longest and most satisfying of the stories (40 minutes) details the summer holiday of a madam and her girls.
