Publish
When you're finished writing your first story on Medium, click on the "Publish" button to explore the publishing options available in the drop-down menu:

Adding Tags:
Medium will try to automatically suggest some tags for you based on the text of your story.

Accuracy will vary depending on the length of your story and subject matter. To remove an existing tag, click on the "x" next to it and the tag will disappear.
To add a new tag, click on the field marked "Add a tag...":

When you begin typing a new tag, Medium will show you existing tags using the same word(s) or characters:

Continue writing to add your own unique tag and press enter when you're finished. Or click on one of the suggested tags from the drop-down menu. You can use up to three tags in a story.
Note: For more info on tags here.
Click "Publish" when you are finished.

Visibility and License Options
When publishing on Medium, you're able to specify meta-information which will be attached to your story to control both its visibility and licensing.
From the "Publish" drop-down menu, click on "Visibility and license options":

Then click on "Visibility: Public":

Public
Currently there are two options for the visibility of a story: "Public" and "Unlisted." Each affects where and how your story is accessible on Medium.

Clicking "Public" will show you a message which explains that setting:
"The story will be public. Your followers will be notified when you publish for the first time."
Unlisted
Click on "Unlisted" to activate that as your visibility setting.

Selecting "Unlisted" will show a message explaining that setting:
"The story will only be visible to those with the link. It won’t be listed on Medium’s public pages (your profile, homepage)."
Mentions & Visibility
If you select "Unlisted" as your story's visibility setting, but have made use of mentions in your story, you'll see a notification when you try to publish, reminding you that anyone you've mentioned in your unlisted story will be notified that they've been mentioned. The "Publish" button will also turn a warning shade of yellow:

If that fits what you had in mind when you chose to make your story unlisted, then click "Publish."
License Options
Writing on Medium, you'll be able to define intellectual property licensing to your work from a spectrum of possibilities.
From the "Publish" drop-down menu, click on "Visibility and license" options. And then click on: "License: All Rights Reserved"—the default setting on Medium.
Note: According to the Terms of Service, the author of a story automatically owns the rights to their original works published on Medium.

You'll see a menu with some radio buttons to help you further define your story's licensing. If you're satisfied with the current setting, click "Save."
