DRAMATIS PERSONAE ...................................... Anne Shirley
It's not often that a book lives up to its public-shaming-if-you-haven't-read hype. This book lives up to its 104 YEAR HYPE. I almost divorced my childhood for not reading this t...

I totally understand your desire to slap your childhood, but at the same time, I'm kind of enviable of you getting to experience this book for the first time (I DID reread it last year). I love that you can review it from that freshness.
I was at an event this week where David Levithan said of Anne, "Anne is an insufferable bitch!" I nearly flew out of my seat and slapped him right there.

NO, HE DID NOT. Are you serious?? Did anyone else at the event say something?

HI DID!! It was a panel on Imagination, and Robin Wasserman chose Anne of Green Gables to read from as a book that inspired her imagination. I think everyone was QUITE APPALLED. (We mostly just laughed, but I'll never trust the man again.)

Ooooh, and we're about to read Every Day for book club. We'll see who's an insufferable bitch now!

That is supposed to be Gilbert? I watched that series with Megan Follows - after gulping down the books at 13 or so - and I know his face was different (loved it at that time). Are there two versions? (I know there is a Japanese anime, too.)

nah, he never played that character, but we all wish he did. henry cavill (that's the impossibly beautiful dude's name, btw) is playing superman in the upcoming reboot by director zack snyder (suckerpunch, 300, watchmen). (amy adams play l. lane -- ugh!)

Awesome review! I just read Annie of Green Gables during winter break of 2012 and I completely understand the urge to "divorce" your childhood! I had watched the videos on VHS as an adolescent and now I think "WHY didn't you just read the books?! You would have loved them!!"

Natalie, YAY! It is slow in the beginning though... or maybe it just took a little bit for me to get acclimated to the tone, setting, etc.
Olivia, Hee, sorry. I tend to cast Henry Cavill in everything. The actor who played Gilbert looked a little like him though.
Jo, I am sooooo ridiculously excited for Superman.
Danielle, I feel like there are SO many books I skipped out on. I didn't read Little Women until a few years ago too! Have you read Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster?

This book was a part of school sylabus thus a vital part of my childhood and Anne is one wonderful character :)

However.
You know my mind went immediately to Henry Cavill as Gilbert Blythe, so poor Canadian actor didn't stand a chance.
