JERUSALEM / PNN /

Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians in the northern West Bank are without adequate shelter, essential services, or access to healthcare following Israel’s military operation “Iron Wall,” according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The organization warned that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly and called for an immediate halt to forced displacement.

“The scale of destruction and forced displacement is unlike anything seen in decades,” said Brice de la Vingne, MSF’s director of operations. “People cannot return to their homes because Israeli forces have blocked access to the camps, destroying houses and infrastructure.”

The displacement follows the January 2025 ceasefire in Gaza, which ended months of fighting between Israel and Hamas. In the aftermath, Israel intensified military operations in the occupied West Bank, targeting refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 40,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced since the operation began.

Residents described the evacuations as sudden and devastating. “The [Israeli] army raided our house and ordered us to evacuate,” said Issam, a displaced resident of Nur Shams. “We weren’t allowed to take anything—not even our documents.”

Israeli military officials have defended the operation, saying it targets militant infrastructure and aims to prevent future attacks. However, humanitarian organizations report severe impacts on civilians, including restricted medical access and worsening mental health conditions.

“The mental health crisis is alarming,” said Mohammad, an MSF community health educator. “People don’t know what happened to their homes, and many have lost their sense of purpose.”

MSF, which previously operated in the three affected camps, has shifted to mobile clinics in Tulkarem and Jenin, treating displaced individuals for chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, respiratory infections, and musculoskeletal disorders. The organization is also distributing hygiene kits, food parcels, and providing water to Jenin’s Khalil Suleiman hospital, which has faced repeated shortages due to military activity.

Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, violence in the West Bank has surged. According to the World Health Organization, 930 Palestinians—including 187 children—have been killed in Israeli operations.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, MSF warned that international aid efforts remain insufficient. “The needs in the West Bank are only growing, and the response must be scaled up urgently,” de la Vingne said.

Munjed Jadou in Ramallah, Saturday 15 Mar 2025
Israel has intensified its military operations in the Occupied West Bank, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians and escalating ethnic cleansing.

For nearly 50 days, Israeli forces have conducted large-scale military operations across the northern West Bank, particularly in the cities of Jenin, Tukaram, and Tubas, as well as their adjacent refugee camps.

Dubbed “Operation Iron Wall,” the campaign has driven more than 40,000 Palestinians from their homes, according to local estimates.

According to Al Ahram-Weekly Report Israeli media reports indicate that the Israeli government has given the military a green light to expand its operations, deploying additional forces to the northern West Bank. The offensive has left extensive destruction in its wake, while arrest campaigns and raids have increased in other cities, including Nablus, Qalqilya, and Salfit.

Jenin remains the epicentre of Israeli military operations, with heavy assaults continuing for the 49th consecutive day. On Sunday, the Israeli Army extended its operations to include the nearby towns of Qabatiya, Al-Yamoun, and Silat Al-Harithiya, where bulldozers razed large areas of land and tanks were seen rolling into the city.

For the first time in two decades, Israeli Merkava tanks were spotted entering Jenin, firing indiscriminately at civilian homes. The escalation aims to instill fear and force residents to flee to shelters, according to local sources.

Meanwhile, Israeli troops imposed a curfew and carried out widespread demolitions in Qabatiya, leading to fierce confrontations with Palestinian residents. On 25 February, the Israeli Army blocked displaced Palestinians from returning to their homes in the Jenin Refugee Camp and reportedly threatened a Palestinian journalist covering the events.

In Tulkarm, the Israeli military campaign has entered its 28th consecutive day, with reinforcements including armoured bulldozers and tanks continuing to level streets and infrastructure in the Refugee Camp. Civilians are unable to assess the full scale of the destruction due to ongoing military restrictions.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli troops stormed the western district of Nablus, raiding the Balata Refugee Camp and surrounding villages. In Ramallah, the army entered multiple towns, vandalising vehicles and commercial properties. In Qalqilya, shops were ransacked, and dozens of Palestinians were detained in sweeping arrest operations.

In Occupied East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers under heavy military protection have continued daily incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound since the beginning of Ramadan. Israeli forces have set up checkpoints around the city, blocking Palestinians from the West Bank from entering the holy site, heightening fears of further escalation.

Israel has reinforced its network of fixed and mobile checkpoints, severely restricting Palestinian movement. Military closures have triggered major traffic bottlenecks.

In recent days, the Israeli Army has intensified operations in Bethlehem and Hebron, traditionally less volatile compared to the northern West Bank, targeting the Al-Arroub and Al-Fawwar refugee camps in Hebron and the Dheisheh Camp in Bethlehem.

Troops have fired live ammunition and tear gas while storming homes and carrying out arrests, potentially also seeking to provoke unrest in the southern West Bank.

DEEPENING CRISIS

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned of an escalating humanitarian crisis, describing the current displacement as the largest in the West Bank since the 1967 War.

It estimates that approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been forced from their homes.

“Entire refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams have been nearly emptied of their residents,” UNRWA said in a statement. “With the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes, many people face the prospect of having nowhere to return to.”

Israeli legislative measures started to target UNRWA on 30 January, weakening international protection for Palestinian refugees.

Since the military campaign began, Israeli forces have demolished homes across northern West Bank refugee camps. In the Nur Shams Camp alone, the army razed more than 16 buildings, just days after demolishing 11 houses in the same area. Similar demolitions have taken place in Tulkarm and Jenin.

“These large-scale demolitions represent an alarming new trend,” UNRWA warned. “They are having an unprecedented impact on Palestinian refugees and appear to be aimed at permanently altering the character of the camps.”

Veteran Palestinian journalist Iyad Hamad said that the West Bank escalation is intrinsically linked to the war on Gaza, with a broader goal of dismantling the Palestinian refugee issue.

“There is an Israeli American push to end the Palestinian question altogether. The war on Gaza was devastating, but the West Bank is now paying the price without even firing a single shot,” Hamad told Al-Ahram Weekly.

Hamad pointed to Israel’s simultaneous attacks on UNRWA and the refugee camps as part of a wider strategy. “The systematic targeting of refugee camps and the efforts to dismantle UNRWA aim to erase the Palestinian refugee issue entirely,” he said. “This is a calculated plan to prevent any future discussion on the right of return.”

According to Hamad, Israel’s long-term strategy is to depopulate West Bank refugee camps and eliminate the legal status of Palestinian refugees, thus undermining their internationally recognised right to return to their ancestral lands.

Regarding the inclusion of the West Bank in the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Hammad said that a ceasefire is an agreement between two parties, whereas there is no actual war in the West Bank.

“The aggressor is the Israeli Army, while Palestinian citizens are the victims. There is no ceasefire here because there are no two warring sides in the West Bank,” he said, emphasising that pressure must be exerted on Israel to halt its aggression.

He highlighted that the ongoing siege, economic and financial hardships, checkpoints, closures, raids, and killings indicate that the West Bank is under Israeli control around the clock.

He added that the future of the West Bank is clear and has already been mapped out by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s extreme-right government.

“The goal is the annexation of the West Bank. There are voices within the Israeli government openly calling for the dismantling of the Oslo Accords and the complete erasure of the Palestinian issue,” he explained.

He noted that since 7 October 2023, settlement expansion and land confiscation in the West Bank have surged dramatically, while the Israeli authorities continue to support settler violence aimed at seizing Palestinian land and attacking villages, refugee camps, and cities under the protection of the Israeli Army.

A significant recent statement came from former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant, who declared an expansion of military activities in the northern West Bank.

He instructed the army to prepare for a prolonged presence in the Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams refugee camps for at least a year.

Gallant said that approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced from these camps, which are now “completely empty of residents.” Furthermore, the operations have led to the suspension of UNRWA activities in these areas.

ISRAELI ACTIONS

Commenting on these developments, Israeli affairs analyst Fouad Lahham argued that Israel’s military campaign in the West Bank is not about security or countering armed groups, as the Israeli government claims, but is instead driven by political objectives.

“The primary aim is to launch a large-scale assault on the West Bank to create conditions that force Palestinians to flee, thereby reducing their presence. But the more direct and fundamental goal is to demolish the Palestinian refugee camps and transform them into residential suburbs, thereby erasing a key physical and symbolic reminder of the Palestinian refugee issue,” Lahham said.

He added that part of this strategy involves dismantling UNRWA facilities and halting its operations in the camps.

Lahham warned that the actions might not be confined to northern West Bank camps but could extend to central and southern areas. “

Speaking to Al-Ahram Weekly, Lahham pointed out that Israel is aware that the resistance in the West Bank consists of small groups armed with light weapons, having managed these for years without resorting to large-scale destruction.

“Now, Israel is using this as a pretext to completely wipe out the camps and eliminate the last physical witness to the forced displacement of the Palestinians in 1948,” he asserted.

Regarding a ceasefire, Lahham expressed scepticism about the inclusion of the West Bank in the ongoing negotiations in Doha.

“There are two main reasons for this. First, Israel seeks to turn the West Bank into an active conflict zone to justify its long-term settlement expansion and annexation plans. It wants the West Bank to be a battleground but does not want it included in any ceasefire agreement.”

“Second, Israel’s right-wing government views the political situation in the West Bank as entirely distinct from Gaza and treats them as separate entities,” he explained.

“Unfortunately, the future of the West Bank is now being dictated by the whims of figures like US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government. The direction is clear: either full annexation or the fragmentation of the West Bank into disconnected Palestinian enclaves that are unlivable and surrounded by iron barriers,” he said.

Israel would continue pressuring Palestinians to leave through so-called voluntary migration schemes , he said.

* A version of this article appears in print in the 13 March, 2025 edition of Al-Ahram Weekly

Israel and its far-right racist government continue their systematic slaughter of Palestinians daily, for over 500 days now, without any meaningful international intervention. The world remains largely indifferent, issuing nothing but timid statements that do nothing to protect Palestinians or stop the ongoing massacre. As the bloodshed escalates in the West Bank—following the mass killing and destruction in Gaza—the question remains: why is there no serious action to halt this atrocity?

As Palestinians, we see this silence as nothing but global hypocrisy, a repetition of history, a modern-day Nakba. When Zionist militias—many of which evolved into today’s Israeli leadership—massacred and expelled Palestinians in 1948, the world claimed ignorance. Today, however, Israel’s crimes unfold before the entire world, broadcast live through media outlets. Yet, international inaction persists. Why this silence? Why this paralysis from the international community? Why grant the perpetrators more time to complete their crime? Does this not make the world complicit in the massacre?

For the first time, I write not just as a journalist, but as a Palestinian father who lives in constant fear of the unknown. Every night, I sleep and wake up with a terrifying question haunting every Palestinian parent: what will happen to our innocent children? Will they be killed like the children of Gaza? Will they be slaughtered by settler militias? Will they be hunted down and forced into exile in distant deserts, just as their ancestors were expelled during the Nakba of 1948 by the same extremist groups that carried out massacres like Deir Yassin? These groups are now preparing for new atrocities, aiming to commit what could be the largest mass killings of the modern era.

How can the world remain silent while children are being killed, while thousands of innocent people perish, while homes are demolished, and while entire neighborhoods are reduced to rubble?

Why does the world tolerate Israel’s deliberate starvation, relentless persecution, systematic killings, mass displacement, the fragmentation of Palestinian cities, border closures, military raids, and the daily humiliation of Palestinians?

Where is the so-called civilized Western world? Where is Europe—the very continent that endured wars, experienced the horrors of human rights violations, and witnessed mass displacement? How can Europe stand by in silence while genocide unfolds in Palestine? Has it become so subservient to U.S. policies that it can no longer speak out for justice?

Where are China and Russia, nations that claim to champion the right of people to self-determination? Does the Palestinian people’s suffering not matter because they possess no oil or resources of economic value to these global powers? Have they abandoned Palestine to face the American Israeli war machine alone?

Finally, I won’t even ask about the Arab world, because the answer is already known. Some have chosen normalization, others are racing toward it, while the Arab people themselves remain powerless in the face of this betrayal.

The biggest and final question is for world leaders: is your silence driven by fear of America and its president, a man whose reckless policies have stripped the U.S. of any credibility on human rights, freedom, and democracy? Or is this silence an act of complicity in the slaughter of Palestinians? Does the world truly lack the courage to stand for justice, dignity, and basic human rights?

This is a question directed at the leaders of France, China, Russia, and the nations of Latin America. Why are you silent? Stop the massacre. Stop the killing and forced displacement of the Palestinian people.

It faces severe health and environmental crises, with diseases and epidemics spreading.

The displaced families are facing immense difficulties in relocating elderly individuals, patients, and their essential needs, especially since the occupation is preventing movement by vehicles.

GAZA CITY / PNN /

Israeli occupation forces “IOF” demolished the Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital in central Gaza on March 20, 2025, further dismantling the enclave’s healthcare infrastructure amid the ongoing war. The hospital, the only facility in Gaza dedicated to cancer treatment, was reduced to rubble in a controlled detonation, a video circulating online shows. The footage captures the explosion, followed by the sound of a soldier cheering.

The hospital had previously been used as a military base by Israeli forces during their occupation of the so-called “Netzarim Corridor,” despite its protected status under international humanitarian law. Rights group Al-Haq condemned the attack as part of what it described as Israel’s systematic pattern of genocide against Palestinians, including the deliberate destruction of Gaza’s medical system.

“For 17 months, Israel has systematically dismantled Gaza’s healthcare system, rendering the territory unlivable and depriving cancer patients of life-saving treatment,” Al-Haq said in a statement. The destruction of the hospital, it added, is part of a broader Israeli campaign to make Gaza uninhabitable.

The UN Commission of Inquiry has previously stated that Israel is pursuing a “concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s healthcare system.” Al-Haq and other human rights organizations have documented a series of attacks targeting hospitals, medical centers, and humanitarian convoys, as well as restrictions on medical supplies entering Gaza. They argue these actions constitute violations of international law and demonstrate genocidal intent.

Global Outcry and Calls for Action

Al-Haq has called on the international community to take immediate steps to halt what it describes as Israel’s “systematic targeting” of Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. The organization urged world leaders to impose a ceasefire and take concrete measures to prevent further destruction.

It also called on states to impose a two-way arms embargo on Israel, accusing countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and France of complicity by continuing to supply weapons amid documented war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Additionally, the rights group urged governments to continue funding UNRWA, the main humanitarian agency providing aid in Gaza, despite Israeli attempts to undermine its operations.

The rights group Demand the release of detained healthcare workers and Palestinians arbitrarily arrested and facilitate the evacuation of patients requiring urgent medical treatment abroad.

Al-Haq calls for opening unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza and remove Israel’s restrictive “dual-use” policy that blocks essential supplies.

Al-Haq also support International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations into Israeli leaders and push for additional charges related to the systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system and call to impose diplomatic, economic, and political sanctions on Israel, including suspending trade agreements and cutting military ties.

Al-Haq further called for Israel’s diplomatic isolation at the United Nations, including the potential suspension of its General Assembly membership under the Uniting for Peace resolution.

The Israeli government has not commented on the hospital’s destruction but has previously defended its military operations in Gaza as necessary for national security. The latest attack, however, is expected to heighten international scrutiny as human rights organizations continue to push for accountability in international courts.

Bethlehem / PNN/

The head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)’s Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, Minister Muayyad Shaban, has condemned Israel's recent decision to convert 13 colonial neighborhoods into full-fledged settlements, complete with all privileges and services. He described the move as a step that seeks to further fragment and manipulate Palestinian geography.

In a statement issued today, Shaban explained that the Israeli government had decided to separate a number of colonial neighborhoods from the settlements to which they previously belonged, designating them as independent settlements. This move is seen as a deliberate attempt to strengthen Israeli colonial expansion on Palestinian land.

Shaban detailed that four of these newly designated settlements are located in the Ramallah Governorate, specifically next to the Talmon settlement, while four more are in the Bethlehem Governorate. Additionally, two are situated in the Salfit Governorate, one in Nablus, one in Jericho, and another in Tubas.

The minister added that most of these neighborhoods were initially established as illegal outposts over two decades ago. Over time, the Israeli government took steps to formalize them as neighborhoods, bypassing international law and ignoring the global stance against colonial construction in occupied Palestinian territories.

Shaban emphasized that, while Israel had previously avoided openly declaring the construction of new settlements, pretending these neighborhoods were simply solutions for the "natural growth" of settlers, the recent move reveals Israel’s true intentions. The aim is to build settlements that will facilitate the expansion of Israeli control and further isolate Palestinian communities, thereby undermining any potential for geographic continuity between Palestinian villages and towns.

The 13 neighborhoods that have now been officially transformed into settlements are, as of today, included in the official records of the Palestinian Commission as full-fledged settlements. This marks a significant shift in the Israeli strategy to solidify its presence and territorial claims at the expense of Palestinian land.

Shaban also criticized Israel's right-wing government, which has openly prioritized colonization since its formation. He reiterated that the government continues to implement its plans to seize Palestinian land and push forward annexation efforts, with blatant disregard for international law.

He called on the international community to take clear, concrete, and effective action against Israel’s ongoing violations, particularly in light of the most recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the occupation and colonial expansion, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which deems Israeli settlement activity illegal and invalid.

JENIN / TULKAREM / PNN /

Israeli military forces have intensified systematic demolitions of homes and civilian infrastructure in the Palestinian governorates of Jenin and Tulkarem, including their refugee camps, amid international silence.

Destruction in Jenin

In Jenin, Israeli bulldozers carried out extensive leveling operations around the old cemetery in Jenin refugee camp and parts of the Al-Hadaf neighborhood in the city.

Local sources reported that Israeli forces had destroyed sections of the cemetery’s surroundings and begun demolition and excavation work in Al-Hadaf, adjacent to the camp.

Israeli reinforcements continued to pour into Jenin and its refugee camp as the military assault entered its 60th day. Two days ago, the Israeli army revealed plans to demolish 66 buildings across four neighborhoods within the camp.

Forced Evacuations and Military Takeover in Tulkarem

In Tulkarem, Israeli forces escalated military measures on Friday evening, ordering more residents in the city’s northern neighborhood, near Nablus Street, to evacuate their homes.

Evacuations targeted several buildings, including the Al-Waha, Al-Muhand, and Abu Al-Foul apartment complexes, as well as the Younis family home. Dozens of families were forced to leave their residences, given less than two hours to vacate before the buildings were turned into closed military zones.

Volunteer teams from the Palestinian Red Crescent and local committees rushed to assist families in evacuating, helping them salvage personal belongings before the deadline imposed by the Israeli forces expired.

The escalating measures are part of a broader Israeli campaign in Tulkarem, involving the seizure of residential buildings, particularly along Nablus Street and the adjacent northern neighborhood. Many of these properties are being converted into military outposts, displacing residents and exacerbating their suffering amid ongoing raids and a tightening siege.

Raids, Vandalism, and Arrests

Israeli forces also raided "Fawal Al-Sham," a popular restaurant on Nablus Street, vandalizing the premises, throwing food and oil onto the floor, and assaulting employees both verbally and physically.

Additionally, four Palestinians were detained in an Israeli raid on the Iktaba neighborhood east of the city. The detainees were identified as Mahmoud Alaria, Ahmed Alaria, Mohammed Alaria, and Salama Ibrahim Abu Asal, the latter a resident of Anabta who happened to be in the area at the time.

Road Closures and Vehicle Seizures

Israeli bulldozers further blocked sections of Nablus Street near the entrances to Tulkarem refugee camp with dirt mounds. Soldiers also confiscated several Palestinian vehicles traveling through the area, using them to block parts of the road after seizing their keys and detaining their owners.

In a further act of destruction, Israeli forces dismantled a traffic signal near Al-Firdous Mosque, uprooted decorative trees along the road, and intensified vehicle searches, imposing severe restrictions on residents’ movement.

These latest actions form part of a sustained military campaign across the occupied West Bank, which has seen an increase in home demolitions, forced displacements, and crackdowns on Palestinian communities.

BEIT SAHOUR, West Bank / PNN /

— A majority of Palestinians oppose former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed displacement plan and fear it could further destabilize the region, according to a new public opinion poll released by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO).

The survey, conducted by pollster Dr. Nabil Kukali, polled 1,500 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip between March 5 and March 15. The results indicate widespread opposition to the proposal and concerns about its broader political and security implications.

Fears of Regional Instability

When asked whether the plan would negatively impact political and security conditions in the region, 58.8% of respondents said it would, while 34.4% disagreed. Concern was higher in Gaza, where 73.6% of respondents expressed fear of destabilization, compared to 53.4% in the West Bank.

Analysts say the disparity reflects the differing realities on the ground. Gaza, under an Israeli blockade since 2007 and frequently targeted by Israeli military operations, faces greater uncertainty. The West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority has some degree of autonomy, has seen less direct military action but remains under Israeli occupation.

Concerns Over International Pressure on Egypt, Jordan

The survey found that 55.9% of Palestinians believe Egypt and Jordan will face international pressure to accept displaced Palestinians if the proposal moves forward. Nearly 35% thought they would not, while 9.3% were uncertain.

The belief was more prevalent in Gaza (61.3%) than in the West Bank (54.0%), possibly reflecting fears that regional shifts, including U.S. influence in the Middle East, could impact the two neighboring countries' policies toward Palestinian refugees.

Palestinians’ Confidence in Preventing Displacement

Despite widespread concern, 50.4% of respondents expressed confidence that Palestinians and Arab states could prevent the displacement plan from being implemented. Optimism was notably higher in Gaza (61.3%) than in the West Bank (46.4%).

Meanwhile, 44.1% said preventing the plan was unlikely, while 5.5% were undecided. The divide may be attributed to differing political and security conditions, with many in Gaza believing armed resistance remains a viable option, while West Bank residents, living under closer Israeli security control, may feel less empowered to resist such efforts.

Frustration With Arab and Islamic States

The poll also revealed frustration with the perceived lack of support from Arab and Islamic nations. Nearly 67% of respondents said these countries were not doing enough to support Palestinians in Gaza, with dissatisfaction higher in Gaza (73.0%) than in the West Bank (64.7%).

Meanwhile, 28.4% said Arab and Islamic states were fulfilling their role. This sentiment was more prevalent in the West Bank (30.5%) than in Gaza (22.5%), suggesting that some still view diplomatic efforts and humanitarian aid as valuable contributions.

Motives Behind Trump’s Proposal

Asked about the primary objective of the displacement plan, 33.2% of respondents said it aimed to create a new political reality favoring Israel. Another 27.4% saw it as an effort to eliminate Hamas, while 20.5% believed it was about securing control over Gaza’s natural resources, including offshore gas reserves. Nearly 19% thought the plan was designed to reduce the Palestinian population in the region.

The responses reflect broader concerns that displacement would serve Israeli strategic interests, similar to past policies involving land annexation and settlement expansion.

Potential Alternatives to Displacement

The poll also asked respondents what they saw as the best alternative to the proposed displacement. The most popular response, at 28.4%, was the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Other proposed solutions included:

24.7% – Increasing international pressure on Israel to lift the Gaza blockade.

22.8% – Improving economic conditions in Gaza.

17.4% – Restoring Palestinian Authority control over Gaza.

6.5% – No clear solution.

The findings highlight ongoing support for a political resolution, even as the viability of a two-state solution continues to be debated.

Will Palestinians Stay in Gaza?

Despite ongoing hardships, 66.3% of respondents said they believed most Palestinians in Gaza would choose to remain rather than leave. Support for staying was higher in the West Bank (70.0%) than in Gaza itself (56.1%).

However, 36.6% of Gaza respondents said they believed some would leave in search of better opportunities, compared to 26.4% in the West Bank.

Divided Opinions on Hamas and the Palestinian Authority

The poll also asked whether respondents supported transferring control of Gaza from Hamas to the Palestinian Authority. A majority of Gaza residents—62.5%—said they backed the idea, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with Hamas rule.

However, in the West Bank, only 26.2% supported such a transition. Meanwhile, 47.5% of West Bank respondents viewed Hamas as a legitimate resistance movement, compared to just 17.7% in Gaza. About 20.9% of all respondents said there was no difference between the PA and Hamas, reflecting widespread disillusionment with Palestinian leadership.

Could the U.S. Push for West Bank Displacement?

Asked whether the U.S. could push for Palestinian displacement from the West Bank in the future, 34.9% said they believed it was likely. That figure was higher in Gaza (48.0%) than in the West Bank (34.9%).

Meanwhile, 43.5% of respondents said they did not think it would happen, with opposition higher in the West Bank (49.3%) than in Gaza (27.5%).

International Community’s Role

Finally, the survey asked whether the international community could play a significant role in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. More than half (54.6%) of Gaza respondents and 48.2% of West Bank respondents said they believed it could.

However, 39.4% in the West Bank and 31.4% in Gaza disagreed, indicating skepticism about the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts.

The poll’s findings reflect deep concerns among Palestinians about their future, growing frustration with regional and international actors, and a continued belief that political and economic solutions are necessary to prevent further displacement

Hebron / PNN /

Sami Huraini, a Palestinian youth activist from the Masafer Yatta region in the southern Hebron hills, has been leading grassroots resistance efforts to help local communities remain on their land in the face of Israeli settlement expansion and military policies. Several years ago, he co-founded Youth of Sumud ("Youth of Steadfastness"), a collective dedicated to nonviolent resistance against Israeli occupation measures, which aims to bolster Palestinian resilience in one of the most vulnerable areas in the West Bank.

The Israeli government has long sought to take control of Masafer Yatta through settlement expansion, land confiscation, and restrictive policies that prevent Palestinian residents from constructing homes or connecting their villages to water and electricity networks. The vast majority of residents rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods, making these restrictions even more devastating.

International Solidarity Needed: Protect Palestinian Lives: Sumud A Call for Global Solidarity

International Solidarity as a Shield Against Displacement

One of the key strategies adopted by Youth of Sumud under Huraini’s leadership has been increasing international solidarity. Activists and human rights defenders from around the world live among Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta, serving as witnesses to Israeli military and settler violence while offering a layer of protection for residents.

Speaking to PNN, Huraini emphasised the importance of international presence in these high-risk areas. "The occupation fears being documented. That’s why we've seen increased Israeli efforts to target and deport international activists over the past year," he said. "Israel has intensified measures at border crossings and airports to prevent solidarity activists from reaching the West Bank. Settlers, with army protection, have also escalated their attacks on those who manage to arrive."

From Local Initiative to National Movement

Huraini explained that Youth of Sumud was born in 2017 in the small village of Sarura in Masafer Yatta. The initiative started as a way to unite Palestinian youth and organise nonviolent resistance against forced displacement in South Hebron and other West Bank communities.

"What started as peaceful protests evolved into a way of life," he said. "At first, our focus was on organising demonstrations and solidarity events, but over time, it became a daily struggle—a lifestyle aimed at reinforcing Palestinian presence in these threatened areas."

He highlighted the critical need for such efforts, given that Masafer Yatta remains one of the most vulnerable regions in the West Bank. "International solidarity has played a major role in sustaining our efforts," he added. "Despite increased settler attacks against international activists, they continue to come, standing by us, offering protection, and helping communities resist forced displacement."

A Call for Continued Global Engagement

Amid the ongoing war in Gaza and escalating violence in the West Bank, Youth of Sumud is intensifying its call for international solidarity. Huraini stressed the need for a permanent presence of international activists in Masafer Yatta and other targeted villages like At-Tuwani.

"When internationals are here, Palestinians feel safer. Israel wants to protect its image and conceal its crimes, so having witnesses on the ground makes a difference," he explained. "International advocacy is crucial for the Palestinian cause, and we must continue to build on it."

Huraini also noted that Youth of Sumud has worked with international activists across multiple platforms, increasing global awareness of Masafer Yatta’s plight. "This region has gained recognition because of the solidarity efforts that have amplified our voices," he said.

Night Patrols to Protect Villages from Settler Attacks

Beyond documentation and advocacy, international volunteers also participate in night patrols, a crucial initiative aimed at protecting Palestinian villages from settler violence. "When attacks occur, activists move to threatened communities to help provide protection," Huraini explained.

He concluded by stressing that Youth of Sumud remain committed to exposing Israel’s policies to the world while ensuring Palestinians can remain on their land. "We hope to see a greater influx of international activists in the coming period," he said. "With settler attacks and Israeli military operations escalating, the presence of solidarity activists is more essential than ever. We urge all human rights organisations to stand with the Palestinian people in resisting forced displacement and land confiscation."

This story was produced as part of the Qarib programme, implemented by the French Media Development Agency (CFI) in partnership with and funded by the French Development Agency (AFD).

Jenin / PNN / Story by Yara Mansour –

More than 3,000 families—totaling around 40,000 residents—remain displaced in Jenin city and its refugee camp as Israel’s military offensive stretches past 50 days. Israeli forces continue to forcibly displace residents from the camp and nearby areas, pushing them into temporary shelters while demolishing, burning, and destroying homes.

Among the thousands of displaced families is the Abu Qatneh family, one of those forced to flee under dire conditions. Unable to return home or retrieve even the most basic belongings, they—like many others—have had to seek refuge in makeshift shelters such as schools, community centres, and nurseries, which lack the essentials for humane living.

Samar Ibrahim Abu Qatneh recounted her family’s ordeal to PNN reporter in Jenin. Nearly two months after being displaced, she and her relatives were initially forced to take shelter at the Ibn Sina Governmental Hospital for two days before moving to a tent in the park of the Jenin Charity Association. Just before Ramadan, they were relocated to a small classroom in the association’s nursery.

The Israeli assault left their three-storey home largely destroyed. Samar explained that those who managed to reach the camp sent her images revealing the extent of the destruction—the ground floor was completely razed by Israeli bulldozers, while parts of the second and third floors were heavily damaged.

For children like Hamza Abu Qatneh, who now lives with his aunt Samar in a classroom at the Jenin Charity Association, the experience of displacement has been particularly harsh.

Speaking to PNN, the young boy described his struggles, lamenting the loss of his bed, blankets, and basic comforts after being forcibly evicted from his home at the start of the assault.

Despite the suffering, Hamza remains hopeful. “I will return to my home and my camp,” he said. “Even if we have to rebuild everything, we will live here until we can return to the villages our grandparents were expelled from in the Nakba—a catastrophe that is repeating itself today.”

TULKARM / PNN/

The Israeli occupation forces continue the aggression on the city of Tulkarm and its camp for the 51st consecutive day, and on the Nur Shams camp for the 38th day, amid military reinforcements, home demolitions, and the forced displacement of residents.

Media Sources reported that last night, the occupation forces continued to send military reinforcements, including heavy machinery and bulldozers, toward the city and its two camps.

Meanwhile, infantry units were deployed on the main streets, harassing residents and restricting vehicle movement. They also fired sound bombs to intimidate residents.

This morning, occupation bulldozers demolished homes and residential buildings in the Al-Ghraifat area in the Al-Manshiya neighborhood of Nur Shams camp. This is part of a plan to demolish homes to build roads within the camp and alter its geographic features, especially after residents were forcibly evacuated.

Local sources reported that occupation forces forced residents this morning to evacuate their homes in the Jabal al-Salihin neighborhood of Nur Shams camp, which has been under a tight siege, accompanied by widespread raids and vandalism of homes, and threats to force residents to evacuate. The camp has become almost empty of its residents, with more than 12,000 refugees displaced.

Tulkarm camp has witnessed a massive displacement of the remaining residents of its outlying neighborhoods, including Qaqun, Abu al-Ful, and Marbat Hanoun, after the occupation forced them to leave through threats and intimidation. Local sources reported that 200 families have been displaced from their homes over the past two days due to the escalation of the occupation's aggression and its threats to residents to leave their homes and not return.

Occupation forces are also deployed extensively throughout all neighborhoods, raiding empty homes, turning them into military barracks and sniper positions. They also raid shops, institutions, and mosques, vandalizing their contents and seizing some of them.

Occupation forces continue to seize several homes on Nablus Street, particularly those overlooking Tulkarm refugee camp, where their vehicles are positioned in the vicinity.

These attacks come amidst the ongoing escalation by occupation forces in Tulkarm and its two camps, which has resulted in the killing of 13 people, including a child and two women, one of whom was eight months pregnant. Dozens have also been injured and arrested, and more than 24,000 people have been forcibly displaced from the two camps.

The aggression also caused widespread destruction to the infrastructure, including water, electricity, sewage, and communications networks, as well as homes, shops, and vehicles, which were completely and partially demolished, burned, vandalized, looted, and seized. The entrances and alleys of the camps were also closed off with earth mounds.

GAZA / PNN /

Israeli occupation forces launched a fresh wave of aerial attacks on the Gaza Strip after midnight, resuming the ongoing genocide after a two-month hiatus with widespread airstrikes that so far claimed the lives of at least 254 Palestinian civilians, including children and women.

The ongoing bombardment has resulted in at least 300 fatalities, with over 440 others injured, including women and children. Additionally, numerous people remain trapped under the rubble of targeted buildings.

According to local health sources, the initial toll indicates that the majority of those killed are in the southern Gaza Strip, with nearly 60 people reported killed. Among the injured are several women, children, and elderly people.

Media Sources confirmed that at least five people, including two children, were killed and dozens more injured when Israeli forces targeted tents in the Mawasi Khan Younis area. The wounded were transported to the Kuwait Field Hospital, a local medical facility in the area.

Meanwhile, more than 15 people, including five children, were confirmed killed, and over 20 others injured in Gaza City as a result of the airstrikes, with the victims being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Additionally, dozens of injuries were reported at Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat area, central Gaza, where strikes hit homes in both the Nuseirat and Al-Bureij refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip.

At Al-Awda Hospital in Nussirat, health officials reported 14 fatalities, including children, following airstrikes on two tents in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Over 70 people were also injured, many of them critically, from shelling that targeted civilian homes in the area.

In the northern Gaza Strip, at least eight people, including six children, were killed in an Israeli attack that struck homes in the Jabalia refugee camp. Additionally, several people were injured during the assault on the camp's civilian areas.

Sources also reported the killing of several more people in Israeli airstrikes on two family homes in the Abasan al-Kabira area, located east of Khan Younis, as well as the bombing of tents in the Muwasi region west of the city.

Further casualties occurred when Israeli airstrikes targeted a school sheltering displaced families in the Al-Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City, in addition to the destruction of three homes in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood and other homes in both the Al-Bureij and Nuseirat refugee camps.

Rescue teams have faced significant challenges in reaching affected areas due to the ongoing barrage of airstrikes and artillery shelling from Israeli forces.

This latest wave of violence marks the resumption of the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, which had ceased for two months following the fragile ceasefire agreement.

The escalation comes amid growing fears over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region, compounded by Israel's ongoing blockade and disruption of essential medical and humanitarian supplies.
