Killer Party by Lynn Cahoon

Cozy Mystery 9th in Series
Lyrical Underground (July 18, 2017)
Paperback: 188 pages ISBN-13: 978-1601836366
E-Book ASIN: B01M9EM56U

After a few months of living with her boyfriend Greg, Jill is still getting used to sharing such close quarters, but she’s got no hesitation about joining him for a weekend at South Cove’s most luxurious resort. While Greg and his college pals celebrate their buddy’s upcoming wedding, Jill intends to pamper herself in style. But when the groom is found floating facedown in the pool, Jill must find the killer fast, or she might not have a boyfriend to come home to any more . . .

 When a group of old friends, who grew up together, went to high school and college together, and shared one major secret come to town for a reunion, Jill is the new kid in the crowd, thanks to her relationship with live-in boyfriend (and cop) Greg. when the seeming leader of this friends group, and the soon to be groom ends up dead in the pool, Greg can not investigate officially. He is too close to the case. Usually he wants Jill to keep her nose out of things that might result in her being put in a dangerous situation, but he knows she won't sit quietly and let another detective run the show. He agrees that they can quietly look for clues together. The trouble is, when Jill discovers what she considers interesting information, Greg doesn't seem to care.
The victim, Levi, is soon to be married to a mysterious girl with an unusual accent.
Levi is a multimillionaire and something of a bully and manipulator. Did one of the friends have more than enough or was it a business deal gone wrong? The motives seem many and far ranged.

Besides Jill looking into clues, she has a business to run, civic duties she is involved in, and is starting classes at the local college, all while adjusting to having Greg living with her full time.
This plot includes learning about Jill's relationships with her friends and community, along with getting to know Greg's friends. A dysfunctional bunch with many layers but no one seems to have the big three - motive means and opportunity. Nothing sinister is lining up clearly.

The dangerous conclusion comes as a surprise both to the reader and to Jill.
When the dust settles, she is back in the mix preparing for whatever challenges will be thrown at her next.

A Twisted Vengeance by Candace Robb

The Service of the Dead by Candace Robb

Paperback Publication Date: May 9, 2017
Pegasus Books
Paperback; 256 Pages
Series: Kate Clifford Mysteries, Book One
Genre: Historical/Mystery/Thriller

Expertly recreating the social and political upheavals of late medieval Europe, Candace Robb introduces a new series starring Kate Clifford, a woman forged on the warring northern marches of fourteenth century England. Political unrest permeates York at the cusp of the fifteenth century, as warring factions take sides on who should be the rightful king--Richard II or his estranged, powerful cousin in exile, Henry Bolingbroke. Independent minded twenty-year-old Kate Clifford is struggling to dig out from beneath the debt left by her late husband. Determined to find a way to be secure in her own wealth and establish her independence in a male dominated society, Kate turns one of her properties near the minster into a guest house and sets up a business. In a dance of power, she also quietly rents the discreet bedchambers to the wealthy, powerful merchants of York for nights with their mistresses. But the brutal murder of a mysterious guest and the disappearance of his companion for the evening threatens all that Kate has built. Before others in town hear word of a looming scandal, she must call upon all of her hard-won survival skills to save herself from ruin.

Praise for The Service of the Dead

“Robb’s deft hand creates a realistic political and commercial climate as King Richard II’s reign draws to a close in 1399. Comparable to Sara Poole’s Poisoner mysteries and Ariana Franklin’s Adelia Aguilar series, with its strong political setting and multiple plot strands.” (Booklist)

 “A historical novel that deftly captures politics and interactions between different social interests in late medieval England…against the backdrop of social pressures and military actions, Kate’s character and world shine and draw readers into her choices and challenges.” (California Bookwatch)

 “Kate Clifford is a wonderful creation, hard-nosed in some respects, compassionate and caring on the other. I look forward to the next installment of this delightful series!” (Historical Novels Review)

 “The novel resonates with its compelling portrayal of an England on the brink of crisis.” (Publishers Weekly)

 “The Service of the Dead is a tasty brew of political intrigue, larceny, and murder set within the walls of medieval York. Candace Robb’s latest historical mystery is steeped in the atmosphere of the late fourteenth century, and in Kate Clifford she’s given us a no-nonsense heroine and sleuth who is not only smart, but fierce when those she cares about are threatened. You’re going to love her.” (Patricia Bracewell, author of the Emma of Normandy Trilogy)

 “The Service of the Dead by Candace Robb is a strikingly well-crafted novel that is a compelling page-turner from beginning to end. Very highly recommended for community library historical fiction collections.” (Midwest Book Review)

Scandals and betrayals on top of political unrest make for a deeply complex mystery with layers and layers. Also consider Kate's seemingly unnatural connection to her deceased twin brother and to the endearing pair of war hounds, Lille and Ghent.
With Kate's mother's recent arrival, and seemingly change of heart and lifestyle, we discover that the outwardly competent Kate has some flaws and has made some grave errors in judgement.
As cautious as she appears, she also tries to accept the good in people.
These are not trusting times, either politically or personally. Ones closest friends and even relatives have secrets. The danger level keeps rising and the body count piles up as well.

When all is revealed (or is it) will Kate and her mother come to a new understanding?
Will the political lines be made any clearer or understandable?
Can Kate continue her dubious occupation and maintain her independence?
The time period comes to dark and dreary life and the characters are well developed.
This series is an experience in history.

A Twisted Vengeance by Candace Robb

Publication Date: May 9, 2017
Pegasus Books
Hardcover; 400 Pages
Series: Kate Clifford Mysteries, Book Two
Genre: Historical/Mystery/Thriller

As the fourteenth century comes to a close, York seethes on the brink of civil war―and young widow Kate Clifford, struggling to keep her businesses afloat, realizes that her mother is harboring a dangerous secret… 1399. York is preparing for civil war, teeming with knights and their armed retainers summoned for the city’s defense. Henry of Lancaster is rumored to have landed on the northeast coast of England, not so far from York, intent on reclaiming his inheritance―an inheritance which his cousin, King Richard, has declared forfeit. With the city unsettled and rife with rumors, Eleanor Clifford’s abrupt return to York upon the mysterious death of her husband in Strasbourg is met with suspicion in the city. Her daughter Kate is determined to keep her distance, but it will not be easy―Eleanor has settled next door with the intention of establishing a house of beguines, or poor sisters. When one of the beguines is set upon in the night by an intruder, Kate knows that for the sake of her own reputation and the safety of her young wards she must investigate. From the first, Eleanor is clearly frightened yet maintains a stubborn silence. The brutal murder of one of Eleanor’s servants leads Kate to suspect that her mother’s troubles have followed her from Strasbourg. Is she secretly involved in the political upheaval? When one of her wards is frightened by a too-curious stranger, Kate is desperate to draw her mother out of her silence before tragedy strikes her own household.

"Lovers of Shakespeare’s Richard II will find Robb’s intricate sequel to 2016’s The Service of the Dead a particular treat, as it charts the course of Richard’s downfall and his cousin Henry of Bolingbroke’s rise through the fears and uncertainties of the residents of the city of York in July 1399. These anxieties are worsened by a series of strange deaths connected to the extended family of Kate Clifford, a fierce young widow struggling to cope with not only her own household of jostling servants and the recently arrived illegitimate children of her late husband but also the return of her quarrelsome mother, Eleanor, from Strasbourg with religious women in tow. The character of Clifford is compelling and finely drawn, and for those readers who are patient enough to manage an unusually large number of secondary characters, the answers to a series of mysteries, starting with the reason for an intruder’s attack on a beguine (or poor sister) in the middle of the night, are highly satisfying." - Publisher's Weekley, STARRED REVIEW

The Bull Riding Witch by Jamie Marchant

The Bull Riding Witch
by Jamie Marchant

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Daulphina’s father, the king of Asteria, has always wanted a male heir. Unfortunately for him, Daulphina’s magic means that will never happen unless her bastard half-brother displaces her on the throne. But she’ll take on all the gods herself before she lets that happen. He isn’t nice enough to be a good king.

But apparently, the gods don’t like being challenged because she’s flung across the void and into the dumpy old trailer and chiselled body of Joshua Killenyen, a rodeo bull rider from Alabama. With nothing to eat but Frosted Flakes and no knowledge how she got there, she better find a way home before she gets her head stomped in by the bulls she must ride. Or her brother will take the throne and reduce her people to slavery. Remember, he isn’t nice.

And then, I woke up as a man.

I stared at the warm water falling over me. It had to be magic. Somebody magicked me into a man’s body. Dear gods, did that mean this hairy man was in my body? Was body-switching possible? Granny had never mentioned any such thing when she taught me everything she knew about magic, not that I’d ever been anything but a disappointment to her. I never had the raw power she expected of her successor. Or was my body empty? Or dead?

I was still staring at the falling water when Jocelyn yanked the stall door open. “Joshua, I told you you had ten minutes. Damn it, what’s wrong with you? You still have your boxer shorts on. Have you even washed yourself?” She turned the knob, and the water went away.

I stared up at her. “Miss, you have to believe me. I’m not Joshua.”

She put her hands on her hips. “Who are you, then? The queen of England?”

“No, I’m not a queen. I’m the crown princess of Asteria. I’ve never heard of England.”

She put her hand to her forehead. “Joshua, just how drunk are you?”

“I’m not drunk. This isn’t my body. Somebody magicked me into it.”

Jocelyn stared at me for a second. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, but it isn’t going to get you out of going to Meemaw’s.”

I rose abruptly. “I’m not going anywhere until someone explains what’s going on!
Just how did I become a man?”

I read this book while on a road trip yesterday.  It was a fun book to read parts aloud to those I was traveling with.  Suitable to young adults, and older, this is a clean read.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to wake up one morning as the other gender from that to which you  are accustomed? Throw in waking up in a different era of time and a place you are unfamiliar with and the possibilities are endless.
Not only does no one believe you are not the person they are seeing, but they think you are making things up and slacking to get out of doing chores and tasks you don't care for. Maybe you are just being lazy.

We only get glimpses of Joshua's life as he must reside in the Princess's body.
Daulphina's experience is shown all the way from the beginning. Not only must she please Joshua's very involved family but she must become a champion bull rider while trying to dodge a powerful witch, actually at least two,  who consider her an abomination of black magic and are trying to destroy her.  All she wants is to go home and be a princess.

Things are more complicated as Daulphina's father is dying and the next heir to the throne is being decided. Switching back sits firmly on her shoulders as Joshua has no magic in him.
Combining both worlds of cowboys and rodeo and knights and jousting, this read will keep you wondering what could happen next. Just when you think Daulphina has a chance of figuring things out -- MAJOR plot revolation leaves us with a cliffhanger!

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Jamie began writing stories about the man from Mars when she was six, and she never remembers wanting to be anything other than a writer. Everyone told her she needed a back up plan, so she pursued a Ph.D. in American literature, which she received in 1998. She started teaching writing and literature at Auburn University. One day in the midst of writing a piece of literary criticism, she realized she’d put her true passion on the backburner and neglected her muse. The literary article went into the trash, and she began the book that was to become her first novel. She writes about the fantastic . . . and the tortured soul. Her poor characters have hard lives. She still teaches writing and literature at Auburn University. She is the mother of a grown son.
