Rouze up, O Young Men of the New Age! Set your foreheads against the ignorant hirelings! For we have hirelings in the Camp, the Court, and the University, who would, if they could, for ever depress mental, and prolong corporeal war.

William Blake.

Same goes for you, Young Women!  and you Greybeards too! Set your foreheads against the ignorant hirelings!

The other day I read this whole rant to my Blake class and instantly cut to ELP's "Jerusalem." I had the satisfaction of having one of my best students say, "Now that was cool." Still, nowadays I'd fear for my forehead if I tried this.

Is this a euphemism for lobbyists employed by the military-industrial complex ?
Did Eisenhower read Blake ?

Ike was a surprising person -- sometimes the epitome of a Midwestern square of limited curiousity, sometimes generous and insightful. I bet this would have rung a bell with him if he'd ever encountered it. But your take is mine, with the addition of all those hirelings promoting and grooming and lying on behalf of candidates (when the candidates themsleves aren't lying extravagantly).

Cheney wasn't a hireling though and reversed the usual model of the vice president being weaker than the President hence the first war with a purely business motivation.

Blake's resonance with the Harper government, who would and did but not forever depress mental war and prolong corporeal war in Canada. His muzzled hirelings now may speak. We rejoice in the land of the free and the (less-frozen)north. Blake is always speaking. Cottage weavers had a lot of time to think. It seems that they though about the Resurrection and social correction and came up with Chartism and other good ideas. Blake, a child of weavers, was given time and space to engrave a universe on small brass plates. Nice, that resonating brass.

Brass would have been nice, "sounding" as St. Paul says, but in fact the plates were copper.

I have seen Blake's plates and his books at UCL and the British Museum among others and I know it is copper etching - brass is expensive and difficult - but he saw his gorgeous metal writings as sounding brass but not hollow brass and so based his cosmos. Child of old Welsh baptists, me. You did not have to be weavers to shout God is Love in Welsh in Tonyfelin chapel in Caerphilli as a child of six.

It is an old relationship between God and metals.

I would not take issue with a Welsh Baptist or one's child. Diolch!

Right, thanks, but those goblins knocking in the mines: not to be forgotten: less love there but they are the foundation of fairy stories, Good Folk, changelings and Puck. Shakespeare's fairies are Welsh.
