A few weeks ago, I mentioned a couple of interesting helmet designs that recently caught my attention. Both of those helmets, the Closca Fuga and the Lumos helmet, include technology based features, but the latest helmet from Chinese company Livall takes the idea of a high tech “smart” helmet to a whole new level….
In 2008, Lawrence Brand, of Porterlight Bicycles, decided that he needed a cargo bike, but he didn’t have a secure place outside his London apartment to store one. He found that existing cargo bikes on the market were too long and heavy, so out of necessity the idea for Bringley was born. The bike…
Folding helmets have been around for a while, but most of the ones that I have seen fold or compress laterally. The Closca Fuga is different though. It compresses from the top down, reducing its volume by more than 50% for easy storage in a purse, bag or backpack. The clean aesthetics are nice…
I don’t know Robert Egger, but I remember seeing his picture in a 1992 issue of Bicycling Magazine (along with David Schultz, the other Specialized S-Works designer at the time). When I read that article about “Future Bikes” 20+ years ago, I was about to graduate with a degree in Industrial Design, and the…
I have been busy with quite a few different projects lately, so it has been nearly three weeks since I last found time to post here at BicycleDesign. Recently though, a couple of really nice aero road bikes have been introduced and have quickly been spreading around the web. The new Specialized Venge ViAS…
I wrote a bit about my confusion with the UCI after Jens Voight set a new athlete’s (or unified, or whatever we are calling it now) hour record in September of last year. After watching Bradley Wiggins ride an impressive new distance Sunday, I am excited to see that interest in the hour record is…
In March, I introduced you to the transportation jury for the 2015 Core77 Design Awards . As mentioned in that post, we had a very talented group, and it was a great experience working with Torgny, Melissa, Rob, and Eric to select the winner, runners up, and notables in our category. Judging the professional and student entries…
Reader submitted designs and tips are always welcome and encouraged here, but often I do get focused on my own design projects and fall behind on the emails sent to [email protected]. The volume of (often off-topic) messages from companies and PR firms has increased dramatically in recent years, so occasionally really good designs from readers…
Matthew Harding recently completed his degree in Industrial Design at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. For his final project, Harding designed an Electric Bike Share System, which he describes below: “My initial goal of the project was to encourage cycling in Melbourne, which is very much a car dominant city. I wanted to design the…
Thought it has been nearly three years since I first shared Mark Sanders’ design for the Mando Footloose chainless hybrid e-bike, that 2012 post still remains quite popular today. After the successful introduction of the original Footloose, Mark was asked to design a new non-folding (and more affordable) version of the bike called the…
I have been running a bit behind this blog lately, but there are many interesting design submissions from readers in my inbox (thanks to all of you who have sent in tips or designs). I will be in Miami for Maison & Objet Americas the rest of this week and won’t likely have time to…
A couple years ago, I posted about Semester Bicycles- Hextube bamboo composite frames made in the rural South. Since that time, Greensboro, Alabama based HERObike has continued to explore new ways to build bikes with bamboo, a material that is in no short supply in the region. By creating products made from an abundant…
