Paper quality has gone down - used to be 4 stars and is now 1 star

November 8, 2018

Number of Items: 1Verified Purchase

I purchased these for my business about 8 months ago and was very happy with the product. My two favorite top bound pads were no longer available, but the price and excellent quality made these a good replacement. After they ran out I made another order for a dozen more, and the paper quality is completely different. I could feel it immediately. The ink from the same pen now soaks through the pages and makes two sided writing impossible. I use these for notes for medical charting and it now means double the paper, double the space, double the waste - for the same price. I called Mead and they confirmed it's a manufacturing change, not a batch issue. In the picture I have written with three different pens/inks. The new one bleeds more (especially the second line) ands the ink shows through. Also it's harder to get a clean tear from the perforation because the paper is thinner. There is lots of writing on both sides - the last picture is the back sides of the pages.

Dissappointed, nearly unusable as a notebook.

I bought three of these for school. I prefer the spiral binding at the top and this had the bonus of a hard thick cardboard back.

The paper itself is nice. The hard backing is solid and great when you aren’t at a desk or table. Other than permanent markers, I’ve found most ink doesn’t bleed through.

Unfortunately all the great stuff is canceled out by the fact that the pages are all stuck together at the top at the spiral. So, when turning the page they tear. I’ve tried all three of them and they are all this way. I suppose if you prefer to take each page out of the notebook after writing on it, it wouldn’t be a big deal. (They are perforated, as well.) But I want to Jeep my notes all together and of the first 15 pages, at least 10 were no longer attached to the notebook after turning the page. (See video for close up.)

Three Dog Circus

Awful quality. Don't purchase.

I previously purchased this same notepad and I LOVED it. I've just about filled it so I purchased another. The second notepad is horrible.

The "college ruled" lines are not uniformly sized and they're bigger than the lines on my old notepad. The paper is less white. Ink spreads like crazy compared to the old notepad - see the first photo, I used the same fineliner pen with the same pressure. The stiff back of the notepad is cut shorter than the paper is - see second photo - so the bottoms of the pages are going to curl, bend and get generally mussied up.

I am completely dissatisfied with this notepad.

Like it better than TOPS Docket I compared it with at same price

November 27, 2015

Number of Items: 1Verified Purchase

I'm comparing this to the TOPS Docket Writing Tablet, Top Wirebound, 8-1/2 x 11-3/4 Inches, White, Legal/Wide Rule, 70 Sheets per Pad (63631)which I purchased at the same time. Will post this review at that page as well, thought this might be useful for someone trying to select one or the other.
Both the TOPS and the Mead are spiral at the top. Mead has slightly larger chrome rings at the top, TOPS has slightly smaller white rings. Both have a protective "product cover" which is meant to be removed, with a cardboard cover over the notebook. The TOPS Docket definitely has a thicker FRONT cover, almost twice as thick as the Mead Cambridge I would say, but neither has a very thick cover. HOWEVER, the Mead has a much thicker BACK cover (not twice as thick but considerably thicker and harder to bend).
Both notebooks have paper that is lined identically with "college rule", except the TOPS lines stop short of hitting the sides of the page at about 1/8 or 1/16 inch on each side. No big deal there. Both notebooks have a "microperf" at the top to remove them cleanly. Both contain 70 sheets. The TOPS paper is stated as 16 lb. on the cover. There is not stated "weight" on the Mead package (the product page here states 20 lb.), but the Mead paper is slightly thicker....you can feel it in your hand, and you can see it by comparing the "stack" of each notebook's 70 pages. Not a lot thicker, but again it is noticeable holding a single sheet.
There may be another TOPS product which compares more favorably to this Mead product, but between these two I would choose the Mead Cambridge because of its thicker back cover (better support when writing away from a desk as I will be doing) and for its thicker paper. They were priced at 5.99 and 5.98 when I purchased here so no real price difference to consider.

My fellow lefties, your search ends here!

February 27, 2016

As a lefty living in a right handed world... Life tends to be a tad bit annoying! I've been in search for a top bound notebook for the longest time and I think I found the one! The pages are thick, but beware, there can be some leakage from gel pens! The pages are not hole punched but I carry extra binder paper to school so this doesn't bother me. The back cardboard piece is surprisingly thick and stiff so the notebook doesn't feel flimsy at all.

Great product / Poor packaging

May 2, 2018

Number of Items: 1Verified Purchase

I purchased 2 of these notebooks as add on items. I received them in a rather large box (considering the size of the items) I’m a shipment on their own. I love the add on item deals but don’t see why they’re shipped alone. Just seemed odd to me. When I opened the box I found a small amount of packing paper & the notebooks had obviously had a wild ride. You can see from my photos the lack of attention to the packaging. The notebooks are perfect...thick paper & college ruled exactly like I needed. I gave a 5 star rating for the product but I would give a 2 star rating for packaging. It may seem like an insignificant thing but if I were in charge of S&R, I would want to know. Not that MY little review would ever get somewhere. Lol!
