Editorial Reviews

George Winston's Autumn has served as an emotional backdrop to the change of season. A beautiful recording for solo piano, Autumn finds Winston developing simple melodic motifs with studied left-hand underpinning, on hypnotic pieces like 'Woods,' which moves from a brisk rhythmic figure to rubato minor-key runs. Leaving pauses and breaths in all the right places, Winston suggests the play of color and light, the comfortable melancholy, and the encroaching slow-down that characterizes the fall season. Full of memorable themes and moods, Autumn is a timeless album, and serves as a good introduction for someone who has not heard George Winston. In the context of a career in which he has sold over fifteen million albums, Autumn is the first album that George himself recommends (and often gives to) new listeners.

Fall into Autumn

September 8, 2017

Format: MP3 MusicVerified Purchase

I have been listening to George Winston since college. You either like him or you don't. For me it just wouldn't be Autumn without this album. I look forward to the first cool days of the fall just so I can play this music. Admittedly I usually play it in the background while I am woking or writing. It's that kind of music, but don't get me wrong - it is not just white noise, each piece has a distinctive feel which can be melodic and soulful and yes a bit sad. I recently made the digital purchase of this album for the convenince and it is as good as the old cd. George Winston's Autumn and December are easily among his best so if you like this be sure to check out December.

D. Gorman "Crystalline Structure Moon"

still his best...no matter what season it is

it's hard to know what to say about instrumental solo piano albums. obviously, they are meant to evoke a mood. obviously you want them to be well written and well performed. either an album acheives these goals or it doesn't. this album acheives all these goals brilliantly. one of the reasons why this is still winston's best is that it was early in his career...i think this was his first album. these songs are all inspired and written over the course of a decade. he stuck to original tunes that were written over time, and weren't rushed to meet some contractual obligations. winston's cover tunes and cover albums are enjoyable, but he is always best when he sticks to his original work...of course, this edition threw in a bonus track at the end that was an instrumental winston cover of an old procol harem tune...it was nice of the record company to throw in the bonus track...it was a pleasant addition to the disc, if not a little out of place...but the actual autumn album was just supurb! solo piano that is evocative of a serene and peaceful mood...a memorable listening experience...well written, inspired over a decade of writing and playing piano for the joy of it. as i said before, i think this was winston's first...i KNOW it was his best! if you only buy one new age, instrumental piano solo album in your life, this is the one to get! trust me!

Fall for the Piano

April 27, 2007

I figured it would be impossible to find a George Winston CD that supersedes the cult-status of "December," but "Autumn" is every bit that beautiful album's equal and maybe even its better. The first selection (SEPTEMBER) consists of three pieces, all evocative of that bittersweet feeling you get while walking through woods passing from summer into autumn. You get sound reminiscent of wind and leaves and even the gong of church bells, all evinced from the keyboard.

This is followed by OCTOBER, which is broken into four sections. The first piece ("Road") makes Winston's piano sound like a lackadaisical young boy bouncing down a dirt roadway on an early, sunny Saturday. It's that sing-songy and full of possibility -- a short and happy piece that wants to light out for the territories like Huck Finn. My other favorite is the final piece of the OCTOBER quartet, "Stars," which is as haunting as the summer constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpio sagging to the south in the ripened, night-time skies of October.

This 20th Anniversary issue includes over 5 minutes of bonus music with the new track, "Too Much Between Us." Altogether, a versatile album that's suitable to read by, dine by, or, best of all, enjoy a glass of wine, shut your eyes, and listen alone in the dark by...

A Quiet Conversation; Unexpected Benefits

November 26, 2009

Verified Purchase

The songs on this album suggest winding down, quiet conversations, and acceptance of life as it is. In other words, Autumn.

I hate to highlight notable compositions, because each of them is beautiful and satisfying to a certain mood. But in particular, "Colors-Dance," "Woods," "Moon," and the track laid down later, "Too Much Between Us," convey a sense of dialogue between two very old, very close friends.

I bought the vinyl version in my first apartment. My roommates and I would sit on our L-shaped couch and read to this music. Somehow, it has the ability to occupy the part of the mind that wants to wander while allowing the rest of your attention to focus on its task. (That may be true of Winston's music in general. )We found this to be true for my son as well, at night when the ADD meds were wearing off but the homework still had to get done.

But don't only listen to "Autumn" when you're doing something else. It is full of emotional content and lovely melody. Unlike many other reviewers, I favor this album over all others, even "December."

It is a real gem

April 29, 2015

I tried to listen to several of his albums and also read the reviews. The fact that someone else had stated that she/he had a lot of his albums but really loved this one was very helpful. Upto this point I had mostly listened to classical piano music but his tracks are like little symphonies, changing within the track to return to a certain theme. I also love the way he touches the piano keys, truly a virtuoso. He and the piano know each other so to speak inside out and it is just beautiful. One track for example makes me think of music by Isaac Albeniz: Asturias.

Perfect music for the season

October 16, 2018

Format: Audio CDVerified Purchase

Having been transplanted to Florida after living my whole life in the Northeast, I miss autumn more than anything else. This album was just the thing to chase the Subtropical Blues away. My wife and I play it when we need to think of cool, crisp days and frosty nights.

Definitely get either the CD version or move all of the songs into a playlist (in order) for MP3s. This is an album that you want to listen to in order. It's perfect for those days when you want to stare out the window at some clouds or trees, even light rain. Very relaxing.
