Let us not forget the microenvironment
Determining a cell's behavior is based on understanding the cell's phenotype - its interaction between genotype and the microenvironment. Often, when understanding disease biology, emphasis is placed on the genotype-to-phenotype relationship; however, the microenvironment is overlooked, but it plays an important role in establishing a cell's phenotype.
Here, we present the first paper published in our Data-driven Multicellular Systems Biology Series by Francesca Buffa et al. The authors present MicroC – their modeling framework which enables one to study the link between genotype, signaling networks and cell behavior in a 3D microenvironment. The authors utilize Agent Based Modelling – combining a computational modelling technique, and gene networks. They apply this to a cancer model system and show how their framework can determine single-cell behavior and properties of multi-cellular growth.
