Julian Assange will next appear on the 2nd of May by video link at this court on the extradition matter. He will next appear on the bail offence at Southwark Crown Court on a date to be announced. Hearing over.

Assange charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions for attempts to crack a DOD computer password, though it appears from the indictment he failed to do so. It’s not espionage, but it’s likely something the Obama DOJ considered not good enough at the time.

There’s no allegation that they successfully broke into SIPRnet, and the seriousness of Assange’s effort is unclear, so I think people can reasonably argue the charges are pretextual and chilling. It’s an argument that will have to look past the face of the indictment tho.

Have often not seen eye to eye with Assange. Aspects of his behaviour over the years trouble me - eg never liked indiscriminate dumping of unredacted material. But have always said would stand by him in defence of what Guardian and @nytimes published in 2010/11

US did not waste any time putting in extradition request for Assange. Terrible precedent if journalist/publisher ends up in US jail for Iraq war logs and state department cables.

The continued imprisonment of @xychelsea is an utter disgrace. The arrest of Julian Assange represents an extremely dangerous crossing of the rubicon. This is an assault on journalism and a free press. All journalists should stand in fierce opposition.
