top shelf flea 3 -in the books

Good times y/day at the TSF3, organized by AnAffordableWardrobe's Guiseppe. Roving groups of men in bow ties taking in the 1950's AC of the VFW in Davis Square. And the deals. $10 ties flew off the tables. The Bavarian hat pins below (a remnant of Harvard Square's defunct Oktoberfest from years ago) were a sleeper hit. Not doing justice to all the hardworking vendors with these few shots, I blame my intern...

The vintage-y clothes are anchored by organizer Guiseppe of AnAffordableWardobe. New this time is JA Outfitters; that is the brain behind Eggs&Wool with another pal so expect camping goods, (pedal)bike stuff, maybe some cool axes and corn cob pipes... Dilboy VFW has a great 60's interior and sidenote, a good no-frills bar in back. #millertime #recommend #seeyouthere

epiphany -shoe shine

Had a fun time yday at the vintage goodness that was the TopShelfFlea (N'EastStyle took photos, including the above). Tough at these events as the enlightened enthusiast customers often have a lot of what is on offer already, but as prices were rock bottom you could always pick up a few ties or a crewneck wool sweater [yup -ed.]. Sidenote; great chats w/ people including several discussions on tartans, ties and Sherlock Holmes (the modern BBC version had its US premier last night y'know) -Guiseppe was the sounding board for tailoring advice.

The epiphany for me though was getting a shoe shine. Any reasonable person can shine their own shoes and should... but having them shined is like a reflexology-mini-vacation. Never expected that.

Nick (brother of 'Flea organizer Guiseppe) had been a shoeshine 'boy' right after high school and would visit the financial district offices that made up his patch. V cool to see someone so into it. Some war stories as well (power tripping ladies w/ knee high boots etc... good stuff). "First mahog' of the day." he shouted, haha. Toothbrush round the edges, spray bottle for the spit shine. Snap the rag. Photo below does not do them justice, but these brogues never looked better.

top shelf flea

In case you were not following along, The Top Shelf Flea is just over a week away. Props to Somervillen, An Affordable Wardrobe for organizing this upcoming event... won't be a pop-up-flea-north but that is sort of the point I suspect.
It will be a gathering of local merchants of high quality vintage, re-styled, and otherwise second hand stuff: clothing for both men and women, books, housewares, furniture, [records? -ed] and whatever else...
-via TopShelfFlea
Look forward to meeting any vintagey/fenceposty gals and gents of the Boston area that are around. Starts at noon cause the blue laws let you start at noon... am I right?
