michael munro-dunn

Text below from the Edinburgh Evening News:
As fashion models go, they don't come more unlikely than Michael Munro-Dunn. Yet the 64-year-old from Stockbridge has been unexpectedly plunged into the limelight after being spotted by a style scout while out walking in the city centre.
Mr Munro-Dunn has now, much to his surprise, been shortlisted as one of 12 finalists in Esquire magazine's search for Britain's Best Dressed Real Man.
He said: "One morning I was walking down Castle Street, minding my own business, going for a cup of coffee and a read of the paper, and this chap came running up behind me and said 'Excuse me, sir'. He was draped in cameras and said he was from Esquire magazine and they were travelling round the country looking for the best dressed men.
"I knew nothing about Esquire magazine at all and he said 'Would you mind if I took a few photographs?'.
He [Munro-Dunn] said: "Since I retired and came home from India I'm absolutely appalled at just how scruffy we've all become and I feel that I need to try and maintain standards.
"I come from an old Army family and I remember my father saying 'Standards, my dear boy, standards'."
HERE'S HOW IT's MUNRO-DUNN
1. Be yourself, don't follow the herd: "People should look to be individual and not follow the high street track. A lot of people follow the high street fashions thinking that's the way it is, and it's really not."
2. Don't be afraid to splash out on clothes and shoes that will last: "People's spending power today does vary tremendously and good stuff is not cheap, but all the latest fashions are designed to last for one season and then it gets thrown away. Good style never goes out of fashion."
3. And finally: "Blokes - for God's sake, put that bloody tie back on."

llbean signature collection -from her perspective
Head to sister-site (literally) ApothecaryFox to hear about this upcoming venture for LLBean - from the ladies perspective. And contrary to the promo shots I am assured it is not all about holding hands... "For some, this must feel a little like messing with their Granny’s famous apple pie recipe. Well I say, move over Grandma, change is good!
...this is a deep breath of clean Maine air that is sure to establish L.L.Bean with a younger generation who have missed out for far too long... there's a new guy in town and his name is L.L.Bean." -via ApothecaryFox

kitchen tools -salt and pepper 2
Now THAT is a salt and pepper set. More of this stuff via sis @Apothecary Fox, who is ramping up to move stateside. She just went to a London craft trade show so no doubt will be dropping a bunch of great finds in the week ahead. Pack the S&P w/ hot lunch as below from LLBean.

turtlenecks
Plaid shirt and turtleneck. Lived in turtlenecks... we all did. Man those cookies must have been good. Scan of an old polaroid, circa 1979, Vermont. Sis, me, bruv.

gazpacho mary

Wish I liked tomato juice. These or regular bloodys always look so damn tasty. Gazpacho Mary; sis and bruv creation. You don't need me to spell out the recipe? Bloody Mary, your choice of herbs/pepper, with a gazpacho float. Nice crunch on top. Check out the other alternative; Bullshots.

father's day ideas
Attaché case by Swaine Adeney Brigg. They still make the model used in From Russia With Love. Catches horizontal...Opinel No. 7 and canvas sheath with steel. Can never have too many of these.
Martin Miller's Gin. (Westbourne Strength). Hot tip on this from Sis again.
Top Secret. I think this was one of the few films I saw with Pops in the actual cinema. Classic. I know a little German etc...
Ear plugs for visitors so they can have a tractor ride.
Pops does not use a computer, so forget digital. Get him in on the Polaroid revival going on. Film still available via Amazon.
tip -codorniu pinot noir rose
Not sure why all my tips and finds tend to be cheap booze... but Sis just put me onto the above sparkling. Codorniu Pinot Noir Rose NV. Others describe it as "surprisingly dry", with a "citrus finish". Much more common in Britain it has to be said but available here too. $14 range. Cheers. The lead up to this was the essential viewing Friday Belt series over at The Trad...

custom

I love custom gear. Getting the chance to spray your name (or make believe film studio -ed.) across sweats, belts, car windows... great. Sis alerted me to to this guy Roberto Sand who runs Bullfrog Laserworks out of Etsy. Wooden sixpacks. Laserscribed. "Your text here" type of thing...

pillow -vintage grain sack

Sis met this lady at a crafty fair in Bondville, VT. Like the idea of reusing older, cloth grain bags. Leslie Janson is her name i think. Etsy shop here.

tip -segura viudas

Once more, thanks to sis for this tip. $10 sparking here, and to use a well worn phrase, "eminently quaffable". Segura Viudas, cava basically. Just got a write-up as part of a larger article on inexpensive bubbly. Consumer Reports via Liqurious. As with Russian Standard, the bottle art and label may not inspire, but proof is in the pudding.

tip -russian standard

This stuff looks horrendous, with its faux Russian stylings... and the blurb is a bit heavyhanded; "combination of traditional wheat taste—from the hardy winter wheat of the Russian steppes—and remarkable clarity—from the soft glacial waters of the frozen north" but it is surprisingly good. Really good... by that i mean super clean silver-bullet taste. And it's cheap, like the budgie. Russian Standard Vodka.
Put onto it by Sis, of Cambridge Wine Society sommelier fame and longtime restaurant manager.

that long haul look -sis

Sis took the time to compile her long-haul travel look. There is a huge difference between brighten-you-up-pink and pinky-pepto-pukey-pink, and Helgs gets it right every time.
"Always wear birkies, comfy and no hassle for that take your shoes off security gate moment. Pashmina: doubles as a blanket for the chilly airplane and no need to use the scratchy airline blankets. Would love to just get on board with lounge pants, but don’t want to do a Paris in juicy-velour, so broken in jeans may be the order of the day, with a classic cardi and posh t-shirt. Not exactly the outfit to get you upgraded, but guaranteed non-wrinkle so you look fresh on arrival.
Bring snacks. They never give you enough. Perfect with that first G&T or ubiquitous Heineken (IBK – international beer of kitchens). They never have any fresh lime though, might have to start bringing those too. Hostess: keep them coming!
The latest celeb trash for entertainment and then something serious. New one, the history of Widow Cliqout. Perfect time to catch up on the things that really matter and then settle in for the long haul with some tunes (new and old).
Pre-landing essentials: freshen up with Carmex."
[update: BTW, what the hell with people dragging huge carry-on luggage then being shocked, shocked that is wont fit in the overhead. The only joy of flying nowadays for me is that some else is carrying my bags...]
