pawlet game supper -nov 13 2010

On November 13, 2010 be in Pawlet VT. The Annual Wild Game & Chicken Pie Supper. Menu is bear roast, venison roast, venison stew, mooseballs [like meatballs made out of... -ed.], chicken pie and vegetable, salad, homemade pies [yes w/ cheddar -ed.] and beverages. Doors open at 5 p.m. At the Pawlet Firehouse, 155 Rte. 133... you'll see the crowd, you can't miss it. Adults $12.00, under 12 $6.00. Need more info? 802-325-3495. (Read about 2008's dinner here.)

These things have a habit of disappearing right when you start to count on them... but this will be the 42nd supper hosted by the volunteer fire dept of Pawlet to raise funds. The drive from Manchester/Dorset over the flats to Pawlet is a stunner and by 4:30 the sun may be going down; cue sunset drive. Temp will dip though as you wait in line to get in; dress properly.

JacShirt: Johnson Woolen Mills; mine.
Shirt: Levi's olive flannel. In reality I only have 1 plaid flannel (wife's grandfather's) but like that chambray necklining there...
Vest: Johnson Woolen Mills, Japan-only makeup.
Nov 13th is opening day meaning first day of deer hunting in VT. Do not go for an early morning stroll w/o a blaze hat. Maybe forego the dawn/dusk strolls for a while actually.
Gloves: Brookville, Burly Bear. Gets cold waiting in line for 5 o'clock hence some old school Wathen's as backup.
Jeans: Jean Shop, Rocker. Been trying to bust these for the DenimeDebate.
Socks from the Vermont Country Store and boots from Maine.

If you get there way early, head into Mach's General Store in Pawlet and let the kids look down the viewing grate in the floor onto the (seasonably iced) waterfall.

went to the topsfield fair and all i got was this rabbit's foot

Big family outing to the Topsfield Fair yday... We've been 4 times in the past 8 years maybe, and it has not really changed. And I mean that in a good way. There are plenty of rides; big carnival rides, little kiddie rides, biggest pumpkin contest, 4H area w/ good sized beekeeping exhibit, plus multiple other ag' barns and showcases as well as an arena for horse/cattle pulls -my favourite part. Ox pulls are really fanstic, but was horses yday. Good stuff.

Set below from Topsfield's smugmug site.

In the rabbit and cavy barn, on your immediate left is a tiny stall that sells standard issue/ imported from China/ dyed a color that does not exist in nature rabbit's feet. $1. I get one every time. Massive rationalisation coming up but I don't feel too guilty about it as can't imagine the rabbits are being killed for their $1 feet. Though maybe a byproduct of whatever nefarious rabbit factory they were processed in?? Ok, new resolution; source ethically created rabbit's foot charm, maybe cottage industry from a hunter, leather whipstiched cord to top it off... Have not eaten rabbit since we left the Scottish Borders over 15 years ago but it is goooood.

[Update: Found a great flickr set shot at Topsfield '08 from area local and magic camera fan Bonnie, as below. Those are the real thing, not poladroid... Thx Bonnie.]

homeboy

Often derided as a shameless vanity project, Homeboy (1988) written by Mickey Rourke [under the pseudonym Eddie Cook -ed.] is a major guilty pleasure here. Throwing out the bad (too many moody lingering shots of the star) there really is some good fun to be had. And considering this was shot right after Barfly you have to tip your hat to his workout regime. This is Rourke pre-tattoos, pre-surgery and pre-HGH. (I wore out my VHS copy years ago, but Homeboy has been reintroduced on dvd since the Wrestler. I believe the "piece of meat" scene is filmed at the same location as some of this film.)

Cowboy boxer, Johnny Walker, transplants to New Jersey and falls in love with an Indian cycle riding fairground owner (played by Debra Feuer -Rourke's wife at the time, who also starred in the undervalued To Live and Die in LA). Tough/tender guy falls for girl next door type running the carnival... late 80's this was right in my wheelhouse. Plenty of old man B-reel shots (in diners, boxing clubs, bars), lots of Chris Walken (the dinosaur and Aristotle monologues, great stuff), Ruben Blades in a brilliant scene as the doctor, John Polita nails it as the greasy fight promoter; and finally Rourke's ever rotating denim collection is practically its own character, awesome. Man, I want that shirt with the pony hide elbow patches... That is what this post is really about. Have to tread pretty carefully here as don't want to suggest that Johnny Walker (great name) with cowboy boots et. al. is my sartorial hero... but enjoy the workgloves, blanket-lined Lee Storm Riders, Redman and rabbits foot... He also carries a Bruce Banner-esque holdall that seems able to fit all this.

Am I certifiable if I bought an identical Tiddledy Winks game to travel with? Well sign me up then. Bosh.

standard issue

Moo cards and stickers. Old, old Red Man bandana. Muji cardholder has been around; inexpensive recommend. Have you seen the "what's in my bag" tag in flickr. Potential day wrecker.

rabbit's foot -third in occasional series

Back from Topsfield Fair; horse pull, kiddie roller coaster for the wee man and commorative rabbit's foot for me. Traffic was all the way back to the exit (5 miles??) by the time we left.

rabbit's foot -second in occasional series

Tough angle, but the broken-down duck and blanket lining should give it away. Get extra points for the snap-on camo hood that is now out of circulation.
