quotable -betty blue

Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade): WOOOOOOOoooooooooohhhhh

I wrote about this 2 years ago but still holds true. No, not "blaze camo hats rule"...
1) Since first seeing this movie, chili con carne has never been the same, instantly transported.
2) there is some fantastic architecture in Gruissan (near Narbonne) France, the setting for Betty Blue. The beach houses on stilts made a big impression and I found a photog who has been trying to save them from demolition/condofication, Paul Grand.

Sidenote; you like Rapidos? That is tequila and tonic. Schweppes. Goes straight to the brain... Again, blame Zorg.

get the pan up to frying speed -gastronauts

Almost a year since British cooking icon Keith Floyd died. He paved the way for not only the idea of the super chef or tv chef but really the personality chef cooking on location with local ingredients and also getting men at home into the kitchen -giving them confidence to crash around the kitchen; frying, chopping and seasoning while having a slurp from the cooking wine. Long sentence.

Would it be a little "fast" to imagine a current guy cooking in a red chambray and cream canvas bow tie... The 80's cookery is slightly dated, that heavily sauced type but it is also about Keith and his efforts to get you jazzed on cooking generally. Clips below are good examples. Been watching these all day...

if you're still with me, further below is part 1/5 of a farewell documentary from last year. A lot of high praise from talking heads and maybe hard to see what the fuss is about from the small clips but give it a chance.

i have the same shirt -slightly worrying

Have a couple of oldmannish BanLon knits in the cruisewear rotation... time and a place for it. Cried/drooled w/ laughter watching Forget Paris the first time. May not stand up over the years but great memory. The other kicker scene is below.

cowboy town

A photo set by Thomas Mcavoy from the Life archive. Shot in 1960 at [update: these were apparently not shot at Freedomtown in the Bronx accoring to Mike, admin of FreedomLand FB page] ...  Freedomland USA in the "Old Southwest" area. The girl in black above looks to be a freekin badass... The amount of checked shirts and whipstitched/fringed everything almost strains your eyes... fantastic. Forget not playing with guns, how about just not having guns at the table... OOOOKkayyy, since it's your birthday.

Love the Levis jacket on this last guy. Thx to JCrew we can all get one next fall...

levi's

These color-saturated ads aired in the UK in early 90's, not sure if/when in the US. Same era as The Swimmer. This was post Nick Kamen, Levi's were on a roll and only needed 501's. The Michael Gondry ones were really top shelf though.

proctor maple research center

The Center for Digital Initiatives (CDI), part of the University of Vermont's (UVM) digital library, recently posted some fantastic shots from the archive of the Proctor Maple Research Center (PMRC) and has given permission to reproduce them here. [thx Robin.]

The PMRC is a field station of the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station of UVM, and the first permanent maple research facility in the United States. The collection of photographs (sample below), taken between 1948-1957 document the history of maple research at the University of Vermont. Further reading at UVM's Maple Research Collection.

Neat to see the mixture of scientific photos mixed in with quite a bunch of the students just messing around. Classic 50's styling; sweaters and wool trousers/jackets/hats as far as the eye can see. Love the maple-buster power augers too... Presented below with their CDI titles and dates w/ few editiorial comments.
