10E2471: That State Fair Look

Just back from the Minnesota State Fair, or the Great Get Together as they call it. File under 'good times'. If you have not had the pleasure it is 20% Ag, 20% rides and shows, and 60% fried food. With a little beer drinking mixed in... As in many fairgrounds there were various approximations of the Tilt-A-Whirl. The Sizzler, Tornado, Whirlwind... all work on the same chaos premise to trick the brain, as rotating arms move across a moving plane. Minnesota native Herbert W. Sellner invented the Tilt-A-Whirl in 1926, in nearby Faribault (of mill and blanket fame). More on that town later...

It is not enough to fry everything though. It must be on a stick. This is for convenience of vendor as much as consumer.

MN Dairy Assoc. has some pretty hip design work going on. Drink all you can from an overhead spigot (into your cup) for $2. Once you stand down you are done.

Down in beer alley the night was young so not too much music yet, but this wireless-guitared dude and his buddy were good value. Having fun, letting loose and why the hell not. It's 11:30. AM.

Cheese Curds. The 'fried' is implied and understood. New to me [East coaster - ed], curd is die sized lumps of barely cheese; milk with rennet but whey removed. Not aged. Imagine nuggets of mozzarella sticks but not stringy. And no bread crumbs. Totally acceptable.

Good deals or sales on all these over at Huckberry:
RW&B cap
Topo Designs chambray shirt
Ollo clip
Chippewa walking boots
Outsiders-style denims from Crawford Denim
Sis-in-law drove from Seattle to MN through Yellowstone and picked up this bandanna map

The weather in MN was not-hot thankfully. Low 70s. A couple of stalls near the arena would stamp out a belt for you with MINDY, or 10ENGINES, or whatever you wanted. The counter seats by the ring are open to all by the way... get close.

10E2424: That Snow Day 2015 Look

Not quuuite #snowmageddon in Boston, though getting there - a foot at this point I bet. It is not the foot of snow in your way - it is 'where do you put it' that causes the problems. Hat tip to all the DPW and crews out there.

It is blowing hard. But you have to dig out at some point before it gets heavy...

10E2071: That Switchback Look

Really just an excuse to alert you that after 10 years in the business, Burlington (VT) brewer Switchback will finally bottle their beer (rather than only sell on draught locally or kegs).  Bottles will be available at "gas stations, grocery stores and beverage stores". Lot of happy people. Looking forward to winter and beergloves on the deck I guess...

Jacket: Burton Hellbrook - Dryride Nanoshell fabric, yarn-dyed twill, 3M thinsulation.
Shirt: CarharttWIP at UnionMade.
Helmet: Bern Baker - and refresh on the Bern site.
Goggles: my fave pair of Gordinis! Bday present a few years ago, epic colorscheme, thx Skye.
Vest: Ibex Scout - 21 micron boucle fabric.

Pants: Filson x Burton; oilcloth.
Gloves: Kinco, still unbeatable for the price, would love to see your alternative? From the hardware store.
The zipline thing is a Riglet Reel, from Burton. It adheres (with NASA grade adhesive...) to the front of your child's board so you can pull them around the base area, or across a flat, then retracts back to the base. Great way to mess around with your young'uns.

10E2002: Summer Style Icon - Morris Buttermaker

Square cut sports-shirts as far as the eye can see. He is practically the only adult wearing a collar. Khakis and tennies.

The kids non-PC language and the stubby beers at the end put this movie firmly in the mid 1970s. Can you play air hockey without thinking of Tatum O'Neal in the Bad News Bears? I can't. Mrs. 10e has a pretty great arm - think she identifies with this movie a little. Even rocked a blond Dorothy Hamill cut in those days... Buttermaker has the summer look down (without resorting to shorts) but might not be the best role model...

that one day conference look

Have been to a few conferences over the course of this library degree and sometimes find them a bit of a catch22;  in that you get more out of them if you are well connected, but the well connected don't need the conferences as much since they will often be pre-familiarized with that material. All the more reason to make sure you are connected then!

Anyhow, in this case I am excited to attend a one-day Social Sciences librarianship "bootcamp" of lectures and meet-ups at Tufts' Tisch library. If this revs your engine you can follow along on twitter as I'll be live tweeting my brains out using #sslbc. Stuff like; The Ethical Challenges of Information Usage in the Age of Digital Media, Reference and Instructional Design, Spatial Data and GIS (Geographic Information Systems)for social sciences librarians, that sort of thing...

Deadstock Pointer chambray.
Shawl collar cardiagan.
Topo x Hillside x Hickoree's bag.
Pelican belt.
Rosie Riveter bandana, $12, USA. Total find.
Carhartt UB04 double fronts, if you dig you can still find these.
Clark's Weavers
Muji card case (if you turn up w/ no business cards... then can't help you)
You'll be there all day. Bring some kind of drinking vessel and (Cuppow) lid.

Thursday, March 8

that washed up look

Tomorrow night at Stratton Mnt, VT as part of the 30th Annual US Open of Snowboarding will be a good-old timed race. For good-old boys and girls... #point_it

I'm not a total philistine about technical products (stone to keep edges sharp is key) but this is my rig for warm weather riding; denim and Johnson WM. Plus goes from the "board" to the beer garden... Won't be posting here for next few days but to the linked tumblr.

that waiting for snow look

Have been out on the hill twice so far, but waiting for that one big Vermont snowstorm to kick off the year. Here again is my hot tip for parents; check your local mountain for a lower-lift or beginner ticket + the U12 kids are usually free or maybe $5, so you can get out there for around $20 total. Stratton offers a lower mountain ticket for $15 which paradoxically then makes it the cheap option for ski/riding if you are taking beginner-ish kids with you.

Jacket: Burton Groucho in fowl camo.
Wool layer: Ibex Scout
Helmet: Bern (Watts). Keep saying, you should wear a helmet for several reasons... and they are probably all down in the lodge waiting for you.
Goggles: Anon Vintage.
Pants: Burton x Carhartt. Or your sno-sealed lined logger pants...
Tool: Leatherman Blast.
Socks: Darn Tough. Calf padded. Made in Vermont.
Coals to Newcastle. VT maple syrup. Drink it now and dream of snow.
Gloves: I still have a hard time finding something better (and certainly not cheaper) than Kinco lifty gloves.
Vest: Carhartt, pile lined. More pockets...
Boots: Burton Rover (w/ Red Wing).

Will also note that Stratton Mountain is currently celebrating its 50th year in operation with the release of a retrospective book by Hubert Schreibel [our old neighbor -ed.], a Burton x Johnson Woolen Mill run of bags (similar to those they did last year but a pleasing red plaid this time), a special Smith goggles make-up and reissue of the iconic "eagle" sweater from Stratton's Austrian invasion days. Thursday, December 1

that christmas eve cocktail party look

Soon it will be that certain winter evening in December and everyone headed out to the small church in the middle of town. One stop sign provides all the traffic control needed. Licorice keeps the small ones quiet. The Christmas "story" that night might be from Kermit's playbook. "The Orange" discusses the novelty and treat of oranges in rural New England in the 1940s and 1950s. One would have the wrap them in a blanket on the sleigh ride home so they would not freeze, but when that orange zest sprayed into the air you can imagine the freshness that would explode in a midwinter kitchen.

Afterwards the congregation heads to someone's house for food and drink. Is it our turn this year? Hope someone brings devilled eggs. You'll be dashing in an out of the house, and maybe pushing someone out of a snowy ditch so bring your gloves. One year I wore kelly green pants and Weejuns, no socks. Latest about 2 minutes... If you stay up late enough you can go out to the barn and see if the animals start to talk at midnight.

that breakfast w/ the preschoolers look

Ours and the other small kids love croissants. They are impossible to eat w/o making a mess, who doesn't like them? I am not Captain Cutaway Collar but my British shirts do have them. Usual suspects above but'cept blue ticking pocket square by Wm. Brown Project.

n'eaststyle's peru fair look

Asked family friend and JeezumCrow artist N'EastStyle to svpply a look for the Peru Fair. Good stuff. her words below.
I highly recommend to all those within driving distance of Vermont to make the hike to Peru. It's an amazing pocket of Vermont and the fair is tons of fun, for young and old alike. I plan on living vicariously through James' photo coverage of the fair, and looking forward to returning home for it next fall.

Handkerchief. Vest. Shirt. Pants. Shoes. Bag. Belt. Thermos.

that peru fair 2011 look

This Saturday (September 24th) there is a pig roast/craft fair in Peru, Vermont. It began as a townwide "end of the world" tag sale and has become a respectably sized town fair. A rinky-dink parade, hay rides and some inventive food (quail kebabs? hell yeah). As foliage is just starting it is important to keep publicly confirming that Vermont is open for business. Seriously this pig roast is one of the high points of the calendar for me... 3 pigs roasted on spits. Roast corn too if you want. #jeezumcrow Further info at PeruFair.org.

that pack it down look -2

Sure it is puking snow right now but tomorrow it will have stopped and it will be partly sunny. A shovel is key gear, even when sledding with little ones. Not to dig out, but to dig IN. Carve a run, smooth it down. Hell, build a jump... Pops is all fired up [pun alert -ed.] to use the outdoor pit.

Hat: Ibex. Yeah it makes you look like Elmer Fudd. That is just gravy.
Goggles: Spy
Flannel Shirt: CXXVI
Vest and Mittens: Johnson Woolen Mills (JPN)
Liquid gold, cause you can't drink Glug all day...
Pants: Burton
Boots: Sorel
Sled: Mountain Boy Sledworks. Freekin' gourgeous.

Alot of folks find cause to complain about the snow... It slows things down. Makes it hard to get around, and so forth... [this one just does not get old -ed.]

that beginning to look like winter look -grommit edition

All the pieces are in place now... after 2 seasons, we figured out what works/needs to be replaced/fits for the young. Now east coast just needs snow (Jay Peak got nailed last night I guess... good start.)

Helmet: Bern Nino. Second year with this one. Adjusts with a crank in the back like modern bike helmets. Kids don't seem to care about goggles too much...
Jacket and bibs: LLBean.
Headsock. Also warms neck/chin and isn't bulky.
Gloves: LBow. These stay on, big time.
Scored used Burton board/boot/bindings from the annual "ski" sale at Stratton Ski School. Good crowd.
Oat/honey/chocolate/crisp rice&cinnamon 'granola' bars from Vermont Nut Free. We are not anaphylactic (hell the kid subsists on PB&J) but might be good to bring incase his buddies show up...

pawlet game supper -nov 13 2010

On November 13, 2010 be in Pawlet VT. The Annual Wild Game & Chicken Pie Supper. Menu is bear roast, venison roast, venison stew, mooseballs [like meatballs made out of... -ed.], chicken pie and vegetable, salad, homemade pies [yes w/ cheddar -ed.] and beverages. Doors open at 5 p.m. At the Pawlet Firehouse, 155 Rte. 133... you'll see the crowd, you can't miss it. Adults $12.00, under 12 $6.00. Need more info? 802-325-3495. (Read about 2008's dinner here.)

These things have a habit of disappearing right when you start to count on them... but this will be the 42nd supper hosted by the volunteer fire dept of Pawlet to raise funds. The drive from Manchester/Dorset over the flats to Pawlet is a stunner and by 4:30 the sun may be going down; cue sunset drive. Temp will dip though as you wait in line to get in; dress properly.

JacShirt: Johnson Woolen Mills; mine.
Shirt: Levi's olive flannel. In reality I only have 1 plaid flannel (wife's grandfather's) but like that chambray necklining there...
Vest: Johnson Woolen Mills, Japan-only makeup.
Nov 13th is opening day meaning first day of deer hunting in VT. Do not go for an early morning stroll w/o a blaze hat. Maybe forego the dawn/dusk strolls for a while actually.
Gloves: Brookville, Burly Bear. Gets cold waiting in line for 5 o'clock hence some old school Wathen's as backup.
Jeans: Jean Shop, Rocker. Been trying to bust these for the DenimeDebate.
Socks from the Vermont Country Store and boots from Maine.

If you get there way early, head into Mach's General Store in Pawlet and let the kids look down the viewing grate in the floor onto the (seasonably iced) waterfall.
