nobody's fool

The scene with the watch is pretty touching, for any parent types out there... I want that hat. The Iron Horse Bar in Hudson NY was formerly the State Grill, but kept the sign after the movie crew left town. And nothing to do with motorcycles, is named for the nearby train yard I believe. Anyone?? In Richard Russo's book Nobody's Fool it was called the White Horse Tavern, don't have the story on why it changed (maybe too many actual White Horse Taverns in reality?) Will I be as crotchety as Sully at that age... half way there. [age or crotchety? -ed.]

boston sand & gravel

Iconic sign near the Boston/Charlestown border for an established cement and fill distributor. Boston Sand & Gravel. So simple. I love it when "it does what it says on the box." Plus you get a great view of the Zackim bridge. I can't find a stellar shot (you have to take it as travelling on 93 south, or better yet the Leverett connector) but the building is infact huge and looming.
[Update: contacted them; they don't make a tshirt of that sign... a la Mayflower Poultry's classic "fresh killed" tee. Gap in the market.]

up in smoke

Not the Sox chances... though this might not bode well...the Citgo sign is on fire...right now.
[update Oct. 20: Sox out, but were almost one swing away from taking it, and plenty banged up. Last we'll see of 'Tek?? He practically won game 6 between the throw out and then the homer.]

paul raymond -soho london

Great article about Paul Raymond (founder of Raymond's Review Bar) who died recently and the rise of London's Soho in the 60's. Times Online. There was a mediocre tattoo studio next to the red sign on the second floor...still there?
