10E1986: The Vaguely

"The Vaguely is a Los Angeles based design studio operated by Vanessa Hernandez. Trained in design & typography this video showcases her hand-crafted talent." - via HunterNFox

Love me that sign-writing. Throw in some gilding and a process video? Instant reblog. HT to Sis for this one...

knitted caps -samantha colley

I don't look good in knitted hats, but I bet you do. Repeating myself here, but not sure why one would buy a stocking cap from a faceless megacorp when for about the same money you can find a friend/etsytype who will craft something for you. The knitter here is Samantha Colley. Sizes for adults or kids. Killer cabling. Loving the striped job, just begging for some matte grey goggles and a sled...

rufflentuck

Actually got tipped off to this lady via PeirremontHicks' twitter, so hats off to them for sharing the wealth. Rufflentuck is an Etsy store that produces straight shot (made up that term but mean not adjustable) bow ties of approx 35" length, perfect for those around the 16" inch neck size. (the tied photo at top is from her site, and they seem to tie a little wider for 15.5 necks, which I prefer... not into the Pee-Wee look). Very reasonable insanely inexpensive; $6 or $8 per tie. The seller/maker is based in Canada, so minor postal delays sometimes but great service. Snagged a few just in time for New Year's, now just need more excuses to wear them.

She wrote; "Using red flannel around the throat is a popular folk remedy to soothe a sore throat - I'm sure it wouldn't pass a scientific test, but passes the comfort test." -Thanks Rosemary.

[update 1/5/09: thx @valetmag for the link yday; plus a bunch of visitors made it over to rufflentuck and scored a few ties, great. Man, I need a decent camera phone... wearing the Brunswick Tartan below.]

etsy find -fieldy tweed

Etsy seamstress Fieldy Tweed out of Glasgow, Scotland (2 posts on Glasvegas today... not sure why) has some crafty (ouch.. ed.) ideas for Harris Tweed. Hot water bottle covers, almost time. Coffee-press cozy, for the man who has everything. Made from scraps of (non-production?)Harris Tweed the colors are much brighter and varied than the usual browns and blues out there. Natch' this smart lady has a blog, start here.
[Update from Suzanne: "I used to buy all my tweed direct from the mill in Stornoway which has since closed - I have quite a stockpile! The Harris tweed labels come with the tweed - there is a quota of 4 labels per meter of tweed which will soon be going up to 8 labels per meter. Hope this answers your question."]

boston handmade marketplace -recap

Quick recap of the Boston Handmade Marketplace in Union Square, Somerville from last Saturday. 50¢ cupcakes, bluegrassy/poppy tunes and some cool vendors. A good size, not atall huge. Solid B grade I think, admittedly I don't get out much... Dropped the ball on pictures but since all these types have Etsy stores can show the greatest hits as below.

Mimi Kirchner.
Dirty Ass Soap. Soap NES controller.. come on, brilliant. A bunch more, check 'em out.
Chromalab
Kristin Crane (my cousin).

All the Numbers

Did notice that at the fair all prices were lower than they advertised on Etsy, makes sense. Makes it worth going to the markets too rather than ordering only online.

Ended up at Redbones. Surprise... Thx Kristin and David.

boston handmade marketplace -july 11th

Boilerplate: Union Square, Somerville, MA. 3-7pm. July 11th. This outdoor market will feature work by local artists and craftspeople associated with Boston Handmade and Etsy. Curated by Jessica Burko and Boston Handmade, the fair promotes local, independent businesses producing handmade works in small studio environments, not factories.

Well known fact; I don't get out muchenough... right Matt?? Union is less than 2 miles away and I've been over for coffee (yes Bloc11 is good) a grand total of 3 times in the last year and for drinks once (the small bar in The Indepenedent, killer cocktails). Haven't been to The Neighborhood in years or even India Palace recently... But on Saturday we'll be checking out this market in Union Square. With bells on. Dressed to play. Shoulder to grindstone. Then head back Redbones after?? Home turf...

Crafter cousin Kristin Crane will be there. Get journalled up.

Full info here.

etsy picks

If I was being a bit poe-faced I could say this post was "curated" by my cousin Kristin Crane... had asked her to send me her favourite Etsy stores (online crafters, usually inexpensive imho) as she is a neck deep in that world as a textile designer and now has a home bookbinder and letterpress gig going. Thanks cuz. (Below find listed the Etsy shop names and 1 image chosen by me. Might not represent the whole collection though)
