bookmark -matchstick lake

Logging related posts and poutine reviews; showstoppers. Much more than that of course... Was recently contacted by Brian Marshall who is based in Ontario and works as a newly graduated Forestery Technician. His post from Radisson, Quebec is a must see. At once personal, his blog is also an insight into modern lumbering (think big machines; feller bunchers, skidders etc). Further reading at Matchstick Lake. Thx Brian.

power moby dick

Damn me. I never understood the first line of Moby Dick "Call me Ishmael." Got it now.

The site Power Moby Dick doesn't so much interpret Moby Dick but rather reveal the history and meaning of words in the text. V v helpful. You can make up your own mind on author's intent. Plus they have links to every conceiveable related resource on the web and beyond.

how to tell the difference.... -via caught by the river

I hope this series continues. All illustrations by Jon McNaught for the excellent Caught By The River. Bit more info at the end...

How to tell the difference between a swallow, a swift and a house martin.

How to tell the difference between a grasshopper and a cricket.

How to tell the difference between a frog and a toad.

How to tell the difference between a primrose and a cowslip.

Cover illustration by Jon McNaug again. This new release An Antidote To Indifference is "the inky version of Caught By The River". If you dont have CBTR (to its friends) on your reading list, it began as a site passionate about angling, music, books, films, nature and pubs and has added everything from watching birds and urban rambling to poetry, art and gardening. Sound a little Radio 4 for you? It is fantastic. Really encourage you to take a look.

Anyhow, this printed work An Antidote To Indifference is basically a bionic fanzine. As they say; "Some of the pieces have appeared on the site before, a few are previously unpublished and any mistakes are unintentional – the budget didn’t stretch to a subeditor. As with here on the site, An Antidote To Indifference is all about the writing. Limited quantities of the fanzine will be available through the Caught By The River webshop. This is a one off print-run, once it’s gone, it’s gone!"

bookmark -whole larder love

Just discovered this blog by Australian photographer and family man Rohan Anderson, called Whole Larder Love. Can't beat his own description;
...my/our lives are filled with growing produce, loving good food, hunting, fishing, family and other adventures as they arise.
Think you'll like it. The blogroll has a few usual suspects and a bunch that are new to me. #daywrecker. Reblogging a handful of pics below with Rohan's ok.

1) gets you psyched to start planning the garden.
2) makes you want to eat rabbit and duck asap.

the william brown project

Going to warn you now... if you are a DIYing, vintage-shirt-collecting foody, who likes fishing and/or hunting and wants to one day keep some animals on an old farm that happens to have a Dwell-inducing glasshouse built next to your Airstream; do not click this link. TheWilliamBrownProject.

Out of the park. The site is by Matthew Hranek; of Wm. Brown Farms fame, and recognizable B&A photographer. His TheWilliamBrownProject blog might not clue you in that he is a pro shooter which makes it entirely relatable... a mix of fenceposty trawled images with family travel, thrifty finds, and goings on at the farm. Super inspiring to see a creative family man and wife living the dream. OK, stopping now. Some images reproduced below w/ Hranek's permission but seriously, get over there.
