Has anyone experience of using silicone on hair and costumes, like they did for KUBO? Any tips? Anyone from LAIKA able to share your technique?I tried brushing some coloured Platsil gel 10 onto some crepe hair, and it just seemed to go into little balls. I am thinking I may need to use a much thicker mix and maybe comb it through. Presumably the same would apply to costumes?Continue

Hello,I was wondering if anyone has used synthetic hair on puppets, and whether there is a particular type, which you can glue onto a hard surface and hide any 'edging'.I've been looking at all the different types and it seems that they either have clip on pieces or nets, which would show. There are weaves, which can be glued on, but it is not clear whether the edges will look odd, as you would normally hide them under another layer of human hair.I did call someone to ask but she didn't understand how I would use this on a puppet. Thanks!Continue

I have a character that's going to be in different scenarios throughout my planned series of mini-films. 1/8th scale, so around 9 inches tall. The costumes vary all over the place, from sleek sci-fi to cliffhanging adventurer, to regular every day jeans and t-shirt style clothing. On one hand, sculpting outfits directly on the figure means making a mold for every possible costume and painting. Lots of work.On the other hand, having one "naked" puppet means sewing each individual costume. The last time I tried sewing was back in the ancient days of Home Economics class in high school and all that really proved was that I was no seamstress, lol. Lots of work. (The idea of sewing scares the bonkers out of me, but it feels like "Yeah! Conquer that fear!" also)Right now, I think sewn outfits are the way to go, but I was wondering what everyone thinks about the subject? Thanks for any feedback.DennisContinue

Just finished my first project--3 minute Claymation with 95% of the work done post, but I am happy with it. The issues with clay are well documented here and I agree, but I don't see how I could get all the facial expressions I would need with a silicone puppet. I want to make a hybrid with all BUT the head being silicone. I haven't found any tutorials on this. Any tips, issues, etc.? would I do it all in silicone, but just do a smaller head shape that I can add clay over? Any cautions of which silicone rubber, or foam latex, materials work well with clay?My clay puppets all had aluminum wire armatures inside them. Thanks for any input. --Also if you know of any tutorials out there that cover this, that would also be greatly appreciated. All the best,Gregg Continue

Hey guys. Just looking for some advice. Ive been asking around and reading everything I can on here to learn as much as I can before I do anything with foam latex or silicone because they seem to be so particular. Im commissioned to build a couple stop motion puppets for a short video that will be on social media. Thousands of people will see it, so I want the two puppets to look decent but they dont need to be film quality either. I animated clay 95% of the time so these peppets will be difficult to work with because of how large the head and hair is. Originally wanted to build up the shape with cushion foam and glue on felt skin and clothes, but this idea was denied since something similar was already done in a prior video for them. I would like to keep this somewhat simple and cheap since the puppets will only be used for a 15 second video and thats it. Considered doing a full body sculpt and basically doing a slip cast with a 2 part mold and liquid latex and filling empty space with cotton and foam. I just really want to avoid having the drastic folding boot effect at the knees and elbows when they bend. Also considered maybe a wood core head with baked sculpey over it for skin and maybe build up the arms, chest, ankles with liquid latex. Trying to avoid dressing this puppet with actual fabric so i thought I could maybe mold and cast the clothes with liquid latex and place it on the foam body, but once again dont know how bad this would fold. Seriously wanting to get in to silicone and foam latex casting and definitely need to use these mediums for future puppets I'm going to work on. I generally only work with clay and latex build up and just worried about costly newb mistakes because I dont have a huge budget on this before I end up breaking even. $200-$250 tops probably. Im leaning towards trying foam latex because I think I could do a full body cast with a seperate head and ponytail. Just worried im going to drop a ton of money getting the mixing portion…Continue

My friend Martin made this neat re-creation of the face melting effect from Raiders of the Lost Ark! The clay did not melt that thinly originally, but after about a month it ages and does this. Teasing it with a heat gun is great for creating a wet effect, and the high frame rate (30 FPS) can make it look like it's happening in real time.Continue

I'm playing with claymation after many years away from all forms of animation (used to be a pro and then a client for advertising work). Currently using a cheap gift software package from my daughter, "AnimateIT!". Because she thinks I'm doing nothing since recently retiring. My frustration comes from the oily feel of plasticine that I transfer to my mouse when left clicking to take a frame. When using traditional single frame film cameras, I remember animators having a foot peddle for the frame exposure and advance.I'm looking for a similar device, a foot mouse as it were, to avoid the transfer of anything sticky or oily back and forth between the model(s) and my computer mouse. Thought it would be a simple tool that i'd discover on the internet for $10 or 20.What I've located are fully functioning mouse controls for someone who has a physical limitation so using a traditional mouse is hard or impossible for them. These seem to cost in the $300+ range. Also found a foot peddle and software for some sort of dental application that was over $1000. Obviously, not what I'm looking for.I also found some sketchy (homemade-ish looking) controls that might be in the ball park but only with drivers for Windows operating systems.I can't be alone in looking for a tool like this.Any suggestions?Continue

I think I've got my laser-cut winder design just about locked in; I've cleaned up and streamlined the design a bit since I last posted about it in this thread. I've tweaked the internal structure so it doesn't rely on washers to properly fit a 1/4" rack, the control knob is fastened directly to the gear (much more secure than relying on the gear's bond to the shaft), and all the T nuts are replaced with these nifty heat-set inserts that go in much easier, neater, and more securely. Right now I'm just using M4 threaded inserts (because that's what I'm using for my puppet rig) but it shouldn't be too hard to tweak the design for other sizes. I'm looking at getting a larger diameter knob for better control, and maybe playing with a bearing insert as well, but at this stage it's pretty solidly usable. My animation setup is tied up with another shot right now, but I should have that freed up in a couple of days to shoot a quick shot showing the rig in action.Control knob and top-side rig insertsLock knob and side rig insertsI'd like to make these available for sale (given how useful they are, they're weirdly difficult to get a hold of), but I want to really make sure the design is solid first. Is anyone interested in beta-testing? I'd be happy to send out a few at shipping cost if I could get some notes back on how it goes, and if their usability is lacking anywhere.Any interested beta-testers, shoot me a ping at [email protected], and let's talk!Continue

Hi folks, I've noticed this a lot, and it's confusing and prevalent enough that it's high time it was addressed directly: Why are some professional animators friendly and happy to talk about their work and others are cold and indifferent and never write back? Is this a policy at the studios that individuals decide whether or not to enforce -"don't help anyone who asks for it- you'll train our competition", or a personality quirk? Whatever it is, it's irksome. We all have the same interests here, so we can all stand to be approachable and communicative. In my opinion, anyone who gives the cold shoulder for spite is an enemy of stop motion (and, well, a jerk- let's be honest). It has been historically shown that every time someone tries to hog all the glory of something for themselves, they end up taking it to the grave and it becomes an obscure knowledge. How does that keep the craft going? That's only going to cut it off at the kneecaps and ensure its demise! Can't speak for everyone, but I got robbed at gunpoint the other week at my night job and have been trying to leave it for years because it isn't a safe place to work- and have never been able to because someone impersonated me on the internet and it shows up in every search for my name and occupation whenever someone does a search. How do I convince you it's not me? I can't... And that's exactly how a lot of newbies feel once they have gotten good enough to be a pro and no one will give them a chance- because other peoples' first impression of them was not accurate or representative of how far they've come. Lots of mid-level animators in this boat, some starving. At least one killed himself, and I know another guy who has thought about it. Social isolation is toxic to passion and talent to the point of being deadly. Let's talk.Continue

Hey guysI have some new projects buzzing around in my head that will most likely require the use of a green screen. My puppets are built to be tied down to the animation table by a screw coming up from underneath the table and into the foot. This method requires I drill a number of holes in the board- this has never been an issue of visibility as camera angling combined with the texturing of the board nicely hides the holes. I'm worried though that if I utilized a green screen backdrop and a green floor that the holes would be like gaping tears in the chroma keying process. Does anyone know how to navigate this issue? I realize I could just not show the puppet's feet, but that wouldn't fly for every shot. I'm asking for variety's sake. Anybody know how magnets would work for a 10-12" puppet?Online sources for buying green screen cloth or paint?or, does anyone know if this would NOT be an issue in the editing process? One thing that has always amazed me is how they were able to make the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park realistic. Looking through articles and PDFs, I came across the Dinosaur input device (now called Digital input device), or DID. Some notable differences between a stop-motion puppet and one that has the input devices is that:1. The armature is 3 times larger in order to accommodate the servos and sensors.2. No Ball and socket joints. All joints are hinges, swivels, and universal. The encoders can only sense a single axis.3. Very precise (if built right).4. The resulting animation lacks the artifacts of stop-motion animation, the pops and jerkiness, and yet retains the intentional subtleties and hard stops that computer animation often lacks.Note: If you guys decide to comment on this post, please keep any CGI bashing you might have to a minimum.Continue

HiHas anyone had any success with using sugru to make puppets? I've just ordered some as it looks like it could be a pretty good material for heads and hands.I want to make a head with a hinged mouth - just a fairly basic mouth that opens and closes but no great amount of expression, kind of like the muppets. I'm going to have a go at making the head out of styrofoam to keep the weight down, with sugru over the top. I'm thinking that I'll include an aluminium wire jaw. Going to do some experiments over the next week or so when I get some time. One thing I wondered about is the eyes. If I use plastic beads, pushed into the head, I suspect that the sugru will dry and glue the eyes in place. This is not what I want to happen - I want the eye balls to be held in the sockets but still able to rotate, so the two things I'm going to try are:1) push the eyes into the head to create eye sockets, but then pull them out again and leave them out until the sugru has cured.2) coat the eyes (beads) with vaseline before putting them in, to see if that prevents the sugru from adhering to the eyes.Has anyone on here ever done anything similar to this or got any experience working with sugru at all? If so I'd love to hear any tips. I've never used Sugru myself, I just came across it online and it looks promising.thanksJoeContinue

Still get bad effects.I'm starting to wonder if it's a video card issue. Really, I'm out of ideas.Essentially, I get a pretty steady rainstorm of glitches -- I see them in the Dragon program, and then the JPGs we capture still contain the glitches.Attaching snapshots below. The first is the worst, second is how it's supposed to look (which by miracle captured by luck). Third is a minor version of the problem. …Continue

Hello everyone! nice to be here.I am an animator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina travelling to New York City. Can you guys let me know where can i find the best supplies over there?I'm looking for good wires, rigs, armatures, assorted kinds of glue, tacky wax, good quality clay, modelling tools and whatever you people think i should try. Maybe Platsil or a better kind of silicone, paint, etc. Here we build everything in a very rudimentary way with hard wires and a limited amount of options regarding glue and tools. If you want to check our animations you can go to our website! www.cancanclub.com.arThank you in advance!Continue

I resolved not to ask any questions until I'd read every question on here, for fear of boring everyone with the same old questions that you've already answered a million times, but needs must, and I'm sure that I'm showing myself up as a real novice here.I made a polyurethane resin (biresin g26) mold, and the attached documents show the two ingredients up as being pretty damn nasty, especially component B. Once I poured B into A, there was still residue in B, and, unthinkingly, I poured some water into it. Then after I used up the mixed resin, I poured the water from B into the residue of A.Some of the two mixed in the pot, and there's some formed resin I can throw away, but there's also still a couple of blobs of part B in there, and a load of water. I know I'm not meant to pour that down the sink. It's classed as hazardous waste. I'm also kind of freaked out at some of the things it claims it can do (dangerous to inhale, proven carcinogenic??) Anyway, I've thrown the resin bit away, and I bottled up the water. I mean it's 99% water and 1% residue but I still don't want to pour it away. And what about the pots, and stirring tool, and brush I used to get rid of air bubbles, etc. I don't want to bin that stuff each time (and I'm not sure whether it's safe to bin, or if it's hazardous?) but I can't wash it if I don't pour it down the sink, and I don't want that stuff just lying around the flat. And I see videos of people just pouring it out without wearing gloves or anything, totally chilled, and it doesn't seem to tally with the scary ass info sheet!! Am I totally overreacting here? (wouldn't be the first time!)I promise I'll have more interesting questions in future...Continue

Hey guys and gals, I'm an animation student in my final year and I'm wondering if I could get your opinion on my dissertation topic. I'm more of a hands on kinda person ^_^'The title is "WHEN IS STOP-MOTION NOT STOP-MOTION: AN EXPLORATION INTO THE EXTENT OF CGI USAGE"Basically, how much CGI can be used on what is considered a Stop-motion film, before it is no longer considered so?I'd like to focus mainly on larger studios that get bigger budgets. They seem to rely on CGI quite a bit nowadays. It seems like these new stop-motion films rely on CGI so much, that they've even replaced almost all characters within a scene using CGI (BoxTrolls). At least for scenes too difficult, complex or time consuming to use stop-motion.I only get 4000 words to work with so I've really gotta narrow down the subquestions.I was originally going to try to define what stop-motion actually means. Followed by what these new stop-motion films use CGI for. And ending it with how these things may or may not stick to the "definition" of what stop-motion is.But I don't think that's quite good enough for a dissertation. And I'm struggling a bit to find out what I want to get from this research. Other than wanting a good grade as well as finding out the techniques these studios use so I can try to apply it to my own work :PAny input will be greatly greatly appreciated. Books, journals etc. I'm more of a hands on sorta person... ^_^'Thank you for taking your time to read this btw!Continue

A lot of stop-motion animators I know think 3D printing is borderline stop-motion.What are your thoughts on this subject?Cause really, they animate in CGI and just print it off.Isn't that the same as animating on photoshop, colouring and everything, printing it on a transparent sheet, capturing it again and calling it Cel animation?Continue

Hello there.I actually started off aiming to become a 2D animator, that is until I started University.I've only been doing it for 2 years. Practicing building sets and doing very short test animations for the past 2 years. But my final major project is coming up and I want to know how to budget the short film I will be making. There will be 1 main human character, a dog character, and some background people that can have minimal movement. I want to try using a "professional" armature for the main character so when I leave university, I know how to work with them.2 sets approximately 2ft by 2 ft. (bedroom & dining room/kitchen)1 smaller set (bathroom-only sink and shower are visible)1 backdrop and floor of school lockers1 large forrest with depth.I've bought Dragonframe, I have lights, and I have access to a studio already (wooden table/frame existing).I've used bits and pieces found is various shops for the small amount of past projects etc. So I'm not too familiar with the average budget. In your experience, how much would this cost? Just the sets, that is?Thank you for reading Continue

Hey guys, I'm doing paper-cutout animation on glass for the first time, and I guess I didn't realize how big of an issue the reflections would be. I'm using a pane of glass on top to keep everything flat, and since the camera's pointed straight down, it picks up its own reflection (as well as everything around it). I've tried moving the lights around, but it seems no matter how I point them, I can't fix the issue. Is there some trick to lighting for glass sets? Or is there anything else I can do?Thanks!Continue

Hi folks, my buddy Martin found a way to make silicone molds directly over Puppet Putty. Until now, it was not known that you could do it without a release. We both noticed that the mold should have been cut in a zig-zag pattern (d'oh!) but so far he's not having any trouble getting the edges to match up. I'm kind of amazed Martin was able to pull it off this fast- he kind of mentioned trying a mold and then disappeared for a few minutes, and when he came back, he put up this video. Talented guy, and an animator to watch. He's going to be working a lot with the 'Putty, and is doing cool stuff. Hey Folks. First time posting on here, I thought some of you may be interested in seeing this. I have never done stop-motion animation (although I would love to try some stop motion soon), rather my interests lie in botanical time lapse photography. I used to run a small company building small motion control rigs but we decided to close shop due to time constraints and I had finally been able to turn my attention to time lapse. I ended up filming the last year for a documentary which provided the funds to put together a proper studio rig. Its almost complete. I still need to wire up the focus motor and the 3D stereoscopic slider on the pan/tilt head, and a few minor things here and there, but the system is finally up and functioning at about 95%Here is a quick clip of it in action. I've been thinking... In regards to todays society. Who are Stop-motion animations actually for?I know you might say it depends on the story, target audience for it etc...But take KUBO for example, a PG rated film. Suitable from 9-10yrs according to reviews.Yet kids (my nephews and their friends) don't seem to care much about how the film is made. They all seem to expect everything to be CGI. And what with all the CGI actually used in there, all the 3D printing. 23,187 faces for just the main character. Why bother having a film like that when even terrible CGId films can make so much more.Hotel Transylvania - Domestic Total Gross: $148,313,048KUBO - Domestic Total as of Oct. 30, 2016: $47,603,334 (Estimate)Lets pretend a different studio made Kubo. I feel as though if it was made entirely using CGI, it would have made a heap more.So who is stop-motion actually for? Animators or the audience? One of the reason why I love stop-motion films is cause I appreciate all the effort and hard work put into making them look so amazing. But I don't think many of the audience would even know or care.Just a thought I had...Continue

Hey guys,I've been animating for close to a year an really small tabletop sets and stages I've made by hand; usually they are a kind of shadowbox that fits the vignette-minifilm. Recently I've been really pushing myself to be more and more 'professional' in my animation practice. However, I've found a number of obstacles that come with the package of living in a small apartment first and foremost of which is space. Another major issue is lighting- in order to avoid creating a hot and depressing environment by closing all doors and blinds I've had to animate in the dark hours of night/early morning. I'm in an area where people just don't have attics and basements and my garage doesn't seem to have any easily accessible electrical outlets (gotta ask the handyman where I might hook up some lights.) Are there any other animators out there who either share my situation and struggle, or is there anyone who has had to work around this before? Open to suggestions concerning space management and general advice. Thanks,Cadmus Continue

Not interested in donations to keep the site open. I don't want to reward Ning's price hike decision.Things on the internet have changed a lot since 1999 when this site first opened. There is surprisingly little to no information about this on the web, but it seems like it should be simple:If I'm shooting with a Canon 70D at a resolution of 5472 x 3078 and export it from Dragonframe at that resolution, then I should be able to edit it in FCPX at 4k resolution (3840 x 2160), right?Everything online and a few posts here talk about getting a Black Magic camera. But it seems that one of the few luxury benefits we get as animators, is that our content is already recorded at an extremely high resolution by default. So, I'm essentially just looking for confirmation that all I need is my normal setup and just making sure all the settings stay above 4k resolution along the way. I do not currently have any 4k monitors to test this workflow.Continue

At long last I have finally got my moco rig working, thanks to a busy weekend with Roos Mattaar. It's a 6 axis rig with a crane arm and a 1.5m track. Connecting everything up has been quite a challenge, and I probably will be modifying some of the gears to improve performance. But the ArcMoco interface with Dragonframe is excellent. We managed to produce a couple of moves, which have exciting potential. These are just the rough videos made from the live view, not proper shots, and we just slung some scenery and props in there to point the camera at not to create a particular scene.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjBSb_7-uUohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNsCpiBA7okWe had to forego the focus control, as the driver was playing up and I managed to fry one (don't buy the Chinese copies!), and the tilt also took a holiday. Severe backlash from the rotation, which will be addressed somehow. Any suggestions gratefully received. The track operates with a ballscrew, a bit slow but very positive. Rotation is via 25:125 gears. Crane uses belt drive, which seems good once tensioned. Pan and tilt are 25:100 gears and focus uses a 40 tooth gear onto a flexible 0.8mod gear ring. But the great news is, after all this time it works!Continue

Hello everybody!Complete newby here, so be warned. I apologize if a similar discussion already exists but i couldn't find one.I've spent the last 3 weeks building 5 ball and socket armatures out of steel.I've looked up different ways to make them and this is how they came out (please excuse the side tilt, just wouldn't work)(A lanky main character, two children, an old lady and a monster.)I am satisfied with how they turned out and how sturdy they are, but i noticed that the joints won't move as fluidly as i'd expected. In some positions it is harder to move the appendages than in others, which i'm afraid might cause some irregularities within the animation. When i made the sandwich plates, i drilled a conical opening into the smaller holes and then pressed the hardened balls into the plates to make a rounded opening for them to fit into.I've also sanded and oiled all the pieces.Has anyone run into similar troubles? Could the reason be that i used only steel instead of brass plates and steel balls for example.Any help is highly appreciated :)Cheers, MotionNoviceContinue

Hi , im currently a student studying animation who's specializing in stop motion. For our academic writing we have to discuss the media we have chosen to specialize in, talking about the process in depth as if we where presenting a seminar on the very subject. One of the areas that i'm struggling to find any real in depth information on is the process of 'Blocking out' the sets and creating a blocked out animatic. To me this process is just as important as story boarding and I want to be able to convey in as much detail as possible why and how the process is done. From what I have gathered its a thrown around term and many company have different names for it but the overall result is the same - Sets build from cardboard and characters animated pose to pose. I was wondering if anyone here had any resources with more information on the process or if you would like to share with me your experience on the topic, any more information can get would be greatly appreciated. *Not sure if i've put this in the right topic but I figure it adheres to animation as a wholeContinue
