About Me

I'm Stacie-- a New York City-based serial hobbyist. I moved to NYC from Indiana 3+ years ago and started the BarkPost at BarkBox.   I'm obsessed with my dog, Pimm, I have craft supplies squirreled everywhere around my apartment, and I love to make cocktails. :)

  • Been completely re-watching Mad Men for about the 14th time and have been very into old-fashioneds again as a result. In the @NYtimesfood cocktail book I found this recipe from @deathandconyc and made it to mix things up from the traditional Don Draper rye old-fashioned. :)
.
🌵 Oaxaca Old Fashioned 🌵
🔸1 ½ oz @grancentenariotequila
🔸½ ounce mezcal
🔸1 teaspoon agave nectar
🔸1 dash Angostura bitters
🔸Strip of orange peel with pith, one inch wide
.
Stir all ingredients until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Hold a lighted match over drink in one hand and orange peel in other hand, with orange side facing flame and about an inch away. Carefully and quickly squeeze orange peel until oils spark. Put out match and drop peel into cocktail. I also added a little oregano leaf for some color because it's one of the last surviving herbs I've got growing at the moment. :)
  • This drink is basically a more complex whiskey sour from the #PDT cocktail book. Usually I think the Maraschino liqueur overpowers most cocktails, but this one tastes more balanced than others. Also seemed fitting to photograph on top of a livestock feed sack from my mom. :)
.
👋 Little Bit Country 👋
2	oz	Bourbon
3⁄4	oz	Lemon juice
1⁄2	oz	Grade B maple syrup
1⁄4	oz	Maraschino Liqueur
1 slice Jalapeño
1	dash Bitters, Angostura
1	dash Orange bitters
.
Muddle the jalapeño with the maple syrup. Add everything else, then shake with ice and fine-strain into a chilled coupe.
  • When Sean and I went camping last fall, I collected some  fresh birch twigs to make into an Everclear tincture for cocktails. The result was this wintergreen-flavored liqueur, a little similar to root beer. Turns out birch is also a great thing to infuse in whiskey and this cocktail tastes just like birch beer. .
🌳 Betula 🌳
🔸1 oz. Birch-infused Rittenhouse Bonded Rye Whiskey 🔸1 oz. Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum
🔸0.5 oz. lemon juice
🔸0.5 oz. Grade B maple syrup
.
Infuse birch bark in rye for 12-24 hours. Add all ingredients, shake, and serve. Recipe from the PDT cocktail book!

  • Over the past couple weeks I've been entranced 🔮by the @deadrabbitnyc cocktail book and all the stories inside. It's the perfect mix of well-researched historical cocktails, delightfully wacky ingredients, and real stories from the two Belfast boys who opened the bar here in NYC. When I was looking at reviews of the book before I bought it, one of the biggest complaints was that the cocktails take too long to make and the ingredients are obscure. That's definitely true, but I've found that a bit of creative improvisation goes a long way. You might not get the exact taste that you'd get if you ordered a drink at the Dead Rabbit, but it's still a really interesting drink and unlike other flavor combinations you've tried before. I look at the recipes in the book more like guidelines than laws- because it's rare that you're going to have bay leaf tincture on hand when you discover it in a recipe you want to try. (Ie: If you don't have raspberry cordial on hand, you can test a raspberry cordial instead.) And TEACUPS. ☕️ .
🌸 Whiskey Daisy a la Fouque 🌸
🔸.5oz raspberry cordial (I used Chambord)
🔸2 dashes orange bitters
🔸.75oz orange juice
🔸.5oz "Rhubarb Tea" liqueur from @artintheage 🔸1oz lemon juice
🔸.5oz Rabarbaro Zucca (I used a mild amaro instead)
🔸2oz rye
🔸Top with soda water and fresh nutmeg
.
Combine all ingredients except for soda water and fresh nutmeg. Shake, strain, and serve in a tea cup filled with cracked ice. Top with grated nutmeg and soda water!
  • One of my goals for 2017 is to start taking instant photos of cocktails from the best bars around the city. I've forgotten my camera like a 🐸 a few times but got a few good photos last night. Last night I lucked into celebrating at @maisonpickle (Of @jacobspickles fame!) for their opening night full of cocktails and French dip. ✨ 🍻 a tour of NYC cocktail bars through tiny photos and to many more 📸s of drinks in the next few months. 🙃
  • My friend gave me a bottle of Galliano for Christmas this year and it's been getting some good use so far. I've only known the liqueur to be referenced as "that giant bottle my parents have had for years," but it was a really interesting dimension in this cocktail I found on @imbibe! (Sean did come home from a big round of medical residency interviews and immediately ask what the heck was in the giant yellow bottle on the bar cart. :))
.
🌬Smoky Dreams 🔥
🔸1 oz. Galliano Autentico
🔸¾ oz. mezcal
🔸¾ oz. fresh lemon juice
🔸¾ oz. Cocchi Americano
🔸1 barspoon St. Germain
🔸2 drops lavender bitters
.
Shake, strain, serve! (I've still got that nasturtium. 🌿)
  • Some cedar tree tincture all the way to NYC from Indiana. 🌲🌲🌲 I got the idea for this from my favorite podcast, Gastropod, that looks at food through the lens of science and history. (Highly, highly recommend!! 🙌) One of my favorite episodes is about Native Americans in Minnesota who are rediscovering Native American cuisine and opening a restaurant using native plants that their ancestors used. The episode is both inspiring and sobering and it gave me a lot more to think about when I go in the backyard and use my Edible Plants book.
.
One of the things that stuck out to me in this podcast episode was how the Native Americans used to make cedar tea from tree bark. Thought it would be a cool test for a tincture. (1 part Everclear, 1 part water, handful young cedar branches) It's a lot like the Douglas fir liqueur I made a while ago but will report back on cocktail combinations. :)
  • There's a comment on the NYTimes about this cocktail, "High-drama cocktail not for the weak-gutted." Sean started making some horseradish tequila a bit ago and I was a little skeptical of the contradiction of horseradish with sweet ingredients, but it was delicious. Thought it was fitting to garnish with some crazy spirals of a nasturtium plant that is still growing. :)
.
🏵 Horseradish Pomegranate Margarita 🏵
🔸1½ oz horseradish tequila
🔸½ ounce Cointreau
🔸¾ ounce fresh lime juice
🔸½ ounce pomegranate juice
🔸¼ ounce simple syrup
.
In a bowl mix 1/3 cup grated horseradish with 1 cup tequila and let mixture sit for 24 hours. Strain through cheesecloth. Add all ingredients, shake, and pour over ice.
