From the Tower of London
ST. THOMAS MORE (1478-1535)
This
season's words from our saints are those of Sir Thomas More, a statesman, humanist scholar, and martyr during the reign of King Henry VIII of England. The text is a meditation on detachment, penned in 1534 while More was imprisoned in the Tower of London, waiting for trial and sentencing for his silence regarding Henry's break from the Church of Rome and divorce of Queen Catherine of Aragon..
Love Overflows
DOROTHY DAY (1897-1980)
This
season's words from past Catholic experience
are excerpted from The
Long Loneliness (1952), in which the founder of the Catholic Worker movement explains what drew her from political radicalism to Catholicism, despite a painful sacrifice conversion required in her love life.
