As January winds down it is a great time to re-evaluate all of those lofty New Year’s resolutions and goals you may have had. Many of us, after reading Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and seeing the new Minimalism (their book here) documentary, definitely wanted to bring new order and organization to our daily lives and households. Luckily, you don’t have to abide by the tradition deadlines and due dates of New Year’s resolutions. In fact, there is no time like the present to start working on organizing your downtown lifestyle. There are some really great services out there to help you get your household ready for a year of productivity and organization.

There are some stories that the world becomes enthralled with, especially in the mystery genre. Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark is one of those stories. The original 1966 Broadway production was adapted into a film starring Audrey Hepburn and Broadway revived the production, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher in 1998. In Calgary, Vertigo Theatre produced the play in 2006, and now have revived it as part of their 40th season.

In the end, Fire Exit Theatre’s production of Catherine Trieschmann’s How The World Began seems to focus on the argument about how this world came to be. But really, How The World Began could be about any disagreement. The subject at which the parties involved are at odds about could be anything. This is what is at the heart of the play, and it’s fascinating to watch the characters circle this conflict and each other over and over again.

Seriously gorgeous, talented, wise and stylish alert! I’m so thrilled to dedicate this edition of the Street Style Huntress to a lovely woman that I finally had the pleasure of meeting a few months ago. When I spotted her at a fashion event, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her and her fantastic style – and I just knew that she needed to be captured asap!

Libertee Muzyka is a woman of many talents – she’s a makeup artist, photographer and blogger, and so it’s no wonder that some serious style creeps in there too! I love her philosophy on staying comfortable while stylish, and finding clothes that enhance her closet and how she feels in the clothes – and of course, chucks! (keep reading).

My favorite book of all time starts like this: “The Great Grey Beast February had eaten Harvey Swick alive.” That’s a heck of an introduction. It goes on to say that this smothering month has swallowed us all, and in its cold coils we look back at the holidays and forward to spring with equal amounts of longing, one son long past, and the other impossibly far away. This is from The Thief of Always – Clive Barker’s (of Hellraiser fame) only foray into children’s literature, and a book that delightfully gives me chills whenever I pick it up.

Whether he intended it or not, Barker’s 10-year-old Harvey Swick is a poster child for Seasonal Affective Disorder, the affliction (with the unfortunate acronym SAD) many of us might be familiar with, especially in Calgary, and especially during our endless winter nights.

Peter Morgan’s film The Queen was written in 2006 and starred Hellen Mirren. Morgan, wanting to continue his examination of Queen Elizabeth II, adapted the film for the stage and renamed it The Audience. It premiered in the West End in 2013, with Mirren reprising her role as Queen. Theatre Calgary has elected to produce The Audience in its theatre season and features a mix of local and nationally based artists, this production proves to be nuanced and thoughtful, providing an insightful look into the life of the Queen and the many audiences she has held with many Prime Ministers.
