1/28/16: A few things: first, two of my three end-of-the-year lists are finally done. As always, it took them a lot longer to get finished than I'd have preferred--apologies for that--but this year, at least, I have a valid excuse. You'll notice those listings have different names than usual (with "Bedlam" in place of "Horror"), and are also hosted at a different site. That site, which has been in the works for several months, is The Bedlam Files (www.thebedlamfiles.com), where all my reviews and commentary will now be hosted. As you'll find, there's still a lot of work to be done on The Bedlam Files, which is why Fright.com is still here. Anyway... New Reviews: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS By MOLLY FLUTE: An above-average porno movie novelization, marked by a fully-rounded narrative and an unforgettably sordid depiction of Hell. KEEP THE RIVER ON YOUR RIGHT By TOBIAS SCHNEEBAUM: An unforgettable diary about a trip through the jungles of Peru, where the author claims to have chowed down with actual cannibals. AVENTINE By LEE KILLOUGH: Provocative psychologically-based sci fi about a distant planet where rich people's most bizarre whims are given free reign. KRAMPUSNACHT Edited By KATE WOLFORD: A so-so anthology of stories about Krampus, the anti-Santa. CHRISTMAS ON CRACK Edited By CARLTON MELLICK III: A bizarro fiction anthology, of interest because it's holiday themed. EVENINGS ON A FARM NEAR DIKANKA: The 1961 Russian made film adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's uproarious classic THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. New Commentary: 2016: THE YEAR IN BEDLAM: The latest of my year-end movie overviews (formerly titled the "Year in Horror"). 2016: A LOOK BACK IN BEDLAM: The latest installment of what used to be called a "Look Back in Horror." Some Past Reviews: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: The famous porn flick from the which the abovementioned novel was adapted. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST: Still the ultimate cannibal movie, period. SANTA CLAUS: From Mexico, the one and only Santa versus Satan movie! ELVES: A lesser-known Christmas horror movie headlined by evil elves. Some Past Commentary: J.G. BALLARD AND THE PROGENY OF HIGH-RISE: About J.G. Ballard's HIGH-RISE and its many follow-ups. KRAMPUS IN FICTION AND FILM: All about popular culture's depiction of Krampus, the anti Santa Claus. |
