The Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention against Torture, the OPCAT, entered into force in June 2006. Over the past decade, the OPCAT has contributed to real changes in the prevention of torture and ill-treatment worldwide. Our new booklet offers a snapshot of the positive changes brought about by the treaty.

DETENTION FOCUS offers in-depth analysis and standards on issues frequently found in prisons. The database pays specific attention to situations of vulnerability among certain groups of detainees who face enhanced risks of discrimination, abuse, ill-treatment or torture. It also includes practical guidance for monitoring bodies.

Torture prevention measures can effectively reduce torture. This is the overall conclusion of a four-year global research study, commissioned by the APT in 2012. In a new briefing paper we extract the key insights from the book “Does Torture Prevention Work?” and provide further analysis on the need for a holistic approach to torture prevention.

The APT’s new Guide on anti-torture legislation is a practical tool for the adoption or revision of anti-torture legislation at the national level. The Guide also promotes existing good practices with concrete examples drawn from different regions.

The APT's new Strategic Plan for 2016-2019 is based on a comprehensive analysis of the high risk areas for torture and the changes needed to reduce those risks. It sets out our contributions over the next four years but it is also an invitation to all our partners to join us in achieving the agenda for change.
