Velocolour Bicycle Painting is one of the top custom finishing shops in the industry. We are currently looking for a highly skilled individual to join our team. Every job is important to us and we are interested in someone who understands how important top quality work is. Custom paint work can range from more straight forward one colour paint jobs to multi-colour custom designed paint schemes for top of the line hand built and production bikes.

Summary of job functions:

-Striping of original finishes by means of hand sanding or chemical stripping based on material.
- Proper preparation of surfaces for refinishing
- Media blasting of frames and parts
-Controlled application of base primer coats and paint
-Detailed sanding and filling of primed surfaces
-More sanding, there is always a lot of sanding to do.
-Precision masking of chromed, stainless steel and polished surfaces
-General shop maintenance; fixing tools, cleaning, removing debris from cleaning and stripping tanks, garbage removal, etc
-Packing finished jobs for shipping
-Logging hours worked on each specific job

Candidate must have the following skills:

-The ability to follow specific directions
-Very high attention to detail
-Patience regarding difficult and/or laborious tasks
-Clean and tidy work habits
-Very steady hands and good eyesight
-Able to pick-up new skills and ideas very quickly
-The ability to take constructive criticism

Additional desired skills:

-A comprehensive understanding of bicycles and related tools
-Post-secondary education in a skilled trade.
-Silver and/or brass brazing
-Perfect level, if you have it you know what it is

The things you won’t be doing:

-Designing paint schemes
-Using a paint brush
-Doing any of the finishing details (initially)
-Geeking out over the amazing custom built bike the just came in (you can do this on your lunch time though) .

Other Details:

The open position is permanent, full time, year round, 8hrs a day. Starting wage is $18 or dependant on experience.

We are looking for someone who can commit for a minimum of two years. It takes minimum 6 months to train and get someone up to speed hence the 2 year commitment. As any one who runs a small business knows hiring and training is very expensive, not because of what we pay you but because when we are training you we aren’t getting the work done that needs to be done to pay the bills, hence the 2 years commitment.

Long term we need an employee who, once trained, can take a frame and complete the prep and full paint from start to finish. This might take a number of years to be able to do well but once you can do it, it is very rewarding, we promise.

If this, very exciting opportunity, sounds like it might be a good fit for you, please email us your resume and/or questions and we will be in touch regarding an interview. Info(at)velocolour.com in subject please put ‘job consideration’

It’s true, we painted a bike, did a custom head badge and chain guard for Pope Francis. It was a real honour to get the call from Advance Sports International in Philadelphia. Essentially they were teaming up with the Philadelphia Cycling Coalition and the City of Philadelphia to give The Pope a bike and it had to be special. He was coming to Philly at the end of September 2015 for the World of Families Conference and, were they not only giving The Pope a bike, but they were presenting the city of Philadelphia with 100 bikes for organizations and for people in need of wheels.
Amanda Dirkensen from ASI did all the design work for the scheme but then the big challenge came when we had to sort all the different levels of stencils and masks. And then for the head badge they wanted it based on The Popes official coat of arms and provided a drawing of an angle wind for the chain guard inspiration. Essentially 7 colours and a million masks later we think it turn out pretty good. Now all we need is a picture of the Pope riding the bike around the halls of the Vatican.
For final pictures of the bike head over to our gallery.

The Bikes hanging, waiting for the final sand

Unmasking of the Fender Writing and Pin Striping

There was a small dove on the top tube, here is a few details of the unmasking process

Wondering what the press had to say about the whole ordeal, here are a few articles that were quite kind to us, to say the least.
