vBulletin 5.3.1 Alpha 4 is now available. |
vBulletin 5.3.1 Alpha is now available. Customers with valid licenses are encouraged to test the software on their staging servers.
Warning: Not recommended for Production Servers
vBulletin 5.3.1 is a maintenance release with a range of bug fixes and a couple of new features.
Support for Large Forums
In the past there have been some performance issues with sites that have a very large number of Forum Channels (200+) and a large number of custom usergroups. In vBulletin 5.3.1, we have refactored how permissions are stored in the datastore and loaded into memory when people visit your site. This has allowed us to increase performance by an order of magnitude while lowering the required amount of memory to process each page. For more information see VBV-14871
Administrator and Moderator Security
We take the security of your site very seriously. Over the years we have introduced a number of technologies to keep your site secure from exploits. Recently in 5.3.0, we introduced Two-Factor Authorization for Administrators and Moderators. In 5.3.1, we are introducing the ability to restrict the ability of Administrators and Moderators by IP Address as well. By entering a series of IP addresses in your configuration file, you can restrict these areas to the individuals with those addresses.
To configure this for your site, edit your /core/includes/config.php and alter these values:
Note: Code Cannot Be Viewed on the Portal
If you're using an older version of the config.php file, you can copy these from your /core/includes/config.php.new file or copy the code above. If you do not know what your IP Address is, you can see it by typing "What is my IP?" into Google.
Route by Node
An option has been added to create URLs on your site by Node ID instead of relying on title text. This is primarily in place to allow foreign language sites to access URLS that are not currently accessible due to encoding issues. You can find this option in the AdminCP under Settings -> Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details. Set the Route Channels and Conversations by Node ID to Yes.
MAPI Update
We have update the vBulletin 5 Mobile API to handle Articles and Events. Once this is supported in the Mobile Apps, your users will have access to this content.
MySQL Version Update
Please note that MySQL 5.1.15 is an old version of the software and no longer under direct support. In vBulletin 5.3.2, we will be increasing the required version of MySQL and MariaDB to 5.5.X. This will provide customers with an additional performance boost and most servers have most likely updated. There are no immediate database changes planned to support this change. We will provide further information as it becomes available.

Minimum PHP Version: 5.6.0
Minimum MySQL Version: 5.1.15
Recommended PHP Version: 7.1 or higher
Recommended MySQL Version: 5.7.0 or higher
Recommended MariaDB Version: 10+

vBulletin 5.3.0 Connect is now available. |
vBulletin 5.3.0 is now available. Customers with valid licenses are encouraged to use this version of the software.
Two-Factor Authentication
We are proud to introduce Two-Factor Authentication for control panel sessions. Two-factor Authentication provides additional security using your smartphone. You would enable this feature in your configuration files. Then each user can generate their own secret token from their user settings panel. Once enabled, the user will retrieve their login token from the app they choose to use. We recommend using Google Authenticator on most platforms. Once the user has created a security key it will be required on appropriate logins. Currently, this functionality covers the AdminCP, ModCP, Inline Moderation, and Site Builder. These are locations controlled by the cpsession system of the software.
Read more about Two-Factor Authentication in this article (https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/arti...authentication).
Calendar
Following the implementation of events, we have added a Calendar Page, and corresponding modules, to the system. This allows you to present your upcoming events in a traditional calendar format. This should allow your users to discover events easily. The calendar can be accessed from any Upcoming Events module. It will inherit any search parameters of that module. It can also be accessed by adding /calendar to your site address.
New modules
Calendar - This is the calendar module used for the new page. You can also place this module on any page where you might want to display this information.
Tab Container - This new module can contain other modules. This will allow you to create a custom tabbed page on your site. We use it on the Calendar page as an example. There the tab container module holds two modules: the calendar module, and the upcoming events module.
System Requirements
Minimum PHP Version: 5.6.0
Minimum MySQL Version: 5.1.5
Recommended PHP Version: 7.1 or higher
Recommended MySQL Version: 5.7.0 or higher
Recommended MariaDB Version: 10+
Current Version Support Schedule:Active Version - 5.3.0

vBulletin 5.2.6 Connect is now available. |
vBulletin 5.2.6 is now available to all vBulletin 5 Download customers with an active license. This version contains fixes and updates to over 180 issues in the software.
Events
We are proud to announce the addition of the Event content Type to vBulletin 5 Connect. The Event system is designed to allow you to schedule events with your community members. Instead of simply copying the calendar system from previous versions of vBulletin, the Event system is designed to provide the same flexibility of other content types in vBulletin 5 Connect. As the administrator, you can decide where community members can create events. In addition, events are searchable through the standard search engine. Events are no longer buried in a sub-system. When creating events, users can provide the time(s) of the events and location. Users can also provide a full description using rich text editing and attachments like any other content type. When combine with vBulletin Messenger, you can have live conversations about your events. You can create events in any channel and control where they are created using the new "Can create event" permission. Events are the successor to the vBulletin 4.X Calendar feature. 5.2.6 includes our first iteration of Events so we are looking forward to your feedback.
New Permission
"Can Create Events" is new permission that has been added to the system. This can be configured in the Usergroup Manager and under Channel Permissions. This will allow Administrators to control who can create events and where they can be created. You can disable Event creation completely by setting this to No for all usergroups.
Upcoming Events Module - As the Site Administrator, you can place the Upcoming Events module on any page to allow users to find events from your site. It is designed with infinite scrolling and will automatically load more events as you scroll to the bottom of the module.
In addition to the Upcoming Event modules, all the default search modules used on your site have been updated to include the Event content type. If you have made changes to these modules, you will have to edit them to include the Event content type if you wish.
vBulletin Messenger
Based on customer feedback, we continue to make improvements to the vBulletin Messenger feature. While many of these are improvements to the interface or performance improvements, there is a new feature added to vBulletin Messenger in 5.2.6. Now the owner of the chat can add new members to ongoing chats. To do this, you would simply click on the gear icon at the top of the chat window. Each new member will get full access to the chat up to the time they were added and can participate from that point on.
Other Changes
Channel Description Module - Previous versions of vBulletin allowed you to show the forum description on a page. This has been implemented in vBulletin 5 as the Channel Description Module. Placing this module on any channel page will show the description at the module's location.
RTL Support
Many outstanding RTL display issues have been resolved throughout the software. We would like to extend a special thanks to our beta testers for their help with this. These fixes enable us to provide better support as we continue to work towards full UTF-8 compliance throughout vBulletin. If you use an RTL language and continue to have problems, please make sure that you are using one of the provided styles without template or CSS edits while testing.
Options
Several obsolete options have been removed from the AdminCP. Either the functionality controlled by these options no longer exists or there are better ways to control them. These are:
"Use Legacy (Vertical) Postbit Template"
"Friends Per Page on Full Friends List"
"Show Last Post on Profile Page"
"Avatars Per-Page"
"Show Forum Descriptions in Forum Listings"
"Last Thread Title Maximum Displayed Characters"
"Show Moderator Column"
"Check Topic Subscription"
"Throttle Check Period (minutes)"
"Enabled User Profile Features"
"Queue Search Updates"
System Requirements
Minimum PHP Version: 5.5.0
Minimum MySQL Version: 5.1.5
Recommended PHP Version: 7.1 or higher
Recommended MySQL Version: 5.7.0 or higher
Recommended MariaDB Version: 10+
PHP 5.5.0 Deprecation
PHP 5.5.X has reached end of life and is no longer supported by the PHP Group. Due to this, we are going to increase the minimum required version of PHP to 5.6.X in a future version of vBulletin.
Current Version Support Schedule:Active Version - 5.2.5
Security Patch - 5.2.4
Security Patch - 5.2.3
No Patch Release - 5.2.2 or earlier.
