    But Nate, this is akin to saying black people in Montgomery should not have boycotted busses because white people were already boycotting black schools. The fact that a tactic can be used for just or unjust purposes doesn’t mean you should never engage it.

    It's important to acknowledge what is saying. He's willing to discard one of the few tactics that is creating consequences for the harmful rhetoric on the right. He's willing to allow that rhetoric to flourish because of some *imagined* threat to him.

    "2018 was the year when preprints were first brought to our attention". What planet have been living on? Preprints in the current sense have been around for literally decades (ArXiv et al since 1990s) and hardcopy working papers have existed since forever.

    Highly recommend this thread to see the dangers that headline-grabbing papers have on the way journals are judged. Being correct may not have generated as many citations as being wrong but headline-grabbing.

    Women astronomers have had lower success rates with proposals to use the Hubble Space Telescope. Until they finally tried blind reviewing (so reviewers didn’t know the identity of the proposers), and the discrepancy went away. H/t
