Since Castro finally kicked the bucket, we thought it would be a good idea to get into the strange and pretty terrible world of our lovely government and their neverending thirst for blood. Of course, in the case of Castro, seems like it totally was a good idea to kill him, but that’s the one thing they seemed to fail at.
Find out all about it because the things our government does in the name of security is chilling.
This week we tackle secret codes and ciphers. With two exceptions, we stuck to codes that have never been broken, and tried to make this episode an introduction to cryptography, specifically strangeful cryptography. The headline story is about 11B-X-1371 and the video is included below. We also touch on some other stories that will are looking to cover in more detail in future episodes. Enjoy!
Hey everyone. It’s Acadia here and I realized that if you like Strangeful Things, you might also like knowing about other podcasts in the same genre. So since I listen to a lot of them, I thought I might save you some steps and let you know which ones I’ve tried and whether or not I like them. And I decided to start with the Thinking Sideways Podcast because I have been listening to them for years and I think I have a good handle on whether or not I think the show is any good.
Long story short: I DO. The show has three hosts: Devin, Steve and Joe, all of whom bring something good to the show. They are obviously friends which helps and they do their research which is excellent.
They tackle mysteries exclusively. So there is some true crime, but there aren’t any answers. They take turns each week with one person doing a topic for that week, so you can say this an episode is a “Steve” or a “Devin” and the other two ask questions and they all discuss not only the known facts of the case, but potential theories as to what really happens.
I have listened to a lot of their shows. Actually, I think I have heard all of them for the most part, so if you want more detail, check out the video below.
This week we head out to sea to find us some seafaring madness and found more than one weird story washed up on the beach.
Ourang Medan
The Ourang Medan is was found by two American Ships in 1947. Find out why!
High Aim Six
The High Aim 6 was found off the coast of Australia in 2003. What happened to this one? Find out in the show!
Carol A. Deering
The Carol A. Deering was found in North Carolina in 1921. And this one is different because it had people on it. At first.
The Flying Dutchman
The Dutchman is the grand daddy of all ghost ship stories. Even the painting of it is spooky. The story is pretty wild and I am confident you will love it.
As you know, we are all about the interesting and unsettling here, and this week’s podcast definitely fits the bill. We don’t really want to give anything away so let’s just say this might reinforce your ideas about checking your kids’ candy, and not messing with weird old guys who live in creepy houses by themselves.
OK so now we have the story of the third of three hosts connected to a murder. What is wrong with us? Seriously! And this week, Jenn gets closer to the crime than any of us have to date. Intrigued? Well, come with us to Boston and find out what happened.
This week we learn about Britt’s family being from Westfield, NJ, where John List decided that the best thing he could do for his family was to make them dead. Organized killers, 13 sisters who steal kids so they can kill them, and angry townsfolk who kill them. Great town. Pretty little town, that is bad for your health!
This was recorded during the summer and meant to be our first podcast in this series, but it didn’t work out that way, so enjoy a little bit of a trip back in time in the banter at the beginning. Remember Pokemon Go? Ha ha ha ROFLMAO etc., etc., etc. In any case, enjoy!
Today we will be heading to 1959 Russia, to a place called Oroten Mountain which in the local Mansi language means, no joke, “Don’t go there”. Ten skiers went in. One came out. The rest ended up in a place called Kholat Syakhl. Mountain of the dead. Though that was not as spooky as it sounds. The literal translation from the Mansi means “place with no game” but hey, it ended up being legit!
The leader of the group, Igor Dyatlov, was an experienced hiker, climber and guide. The other members, were also used to long hikes, ski trips and mountain expeditions. They took a train to a place in the Ural mountains called Ivdel, then took a truck to Vizhai, the last inhabited place that far north. Which seems like the sort of place you should not go past. But, whatevs, on January 27, 1959, they started off on their super fun trip through freezing mountains.
Some of the group in happier times. Before they were all dead. But why and how did they die? Nothing about this story leaves you with obvious answers.
The destroyed tent and camp.A lot of the photos I found were labeled in Russian or other foreign languages so I don’t know which unlucky soul this is.Another victim. These folks were found facing camp and not far from it.
This is primarily the story of a serial killer you have never heard of because he got caught before he got going. Small consolation to his victims, but there are also connections to Acadia and his family that are weird. And we find out what scares the cast as well as what sort of rules there are for murdering according to the authorities.
This week we talk a little bit about how we feel about Demons, Acadia tells a story from his youth, and we learn all about how housing in Gary, Indiana is tough to come by. And when there are already demons living in the place you have your eye on it gets a lot more complicated. And we also dig into what we consider “credible”.
It’s a great show and as always we look forward to your feedback.
