that that's out of the way. . . Now that the Supreme Court has
guessed correctly what Obama et al actually meant in the healthcare
bill (as opposed to what they actually said), it is perhaps safe
to mention that in all our decades of covering the capital, we
never ran across a mistake this bad in legislation this important.
Which isn't to say we won't find it in the future as the gradocrats
who control Washington now - lawyers, economists, MBAs - have
little sense of how to be clear and simple. Thus we have a 900
page bill designed in part to subsidize the health insurance
industry that has done Obama little political good whereas expanding
Medicare would have taken far less space, earned more voter support
and not required a Supreme Court decision.. - Sam Smith

works reading
this article than watching CNN or MSNBC for a whole month: "President
Obama called Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, to broach
a particularly delicate subject. It was during last years
government shutdown and standoff with Republicans, but Mr. Obamas
frustration focused on one of their own. The president said he
suspected David Krone, Mr. Reids intensely loyal and influential
top aide, of leaking to the news media, and requested that he
stay away from future meetings. It did not take much time for
the presidents comments to reach Mr. Reids right-hand
man. To Mr. Obamas surprise, Mr. Krone was listening in
on the call. Suddenly, the aide piped up and made it clear to
the president that he did not appreciate the accusation."

other companies to meet emergency needs. If the Fed had provided
the so-called Super Committee with just a bit more - $1.5 trillion
- that bipartisan junta could have happily met its goals for

2012

Where
the deficit really comes from
For many years, we
have argued that if the Senate
were a public school it would be under court ordered bussing,
if it was a corporation it couldn't get any government contracts,
and if it was a private club, members would want to resign before
running for public office. A recent report by the Congressional
Research Service supports this view.At the beginning of the 112th
Congress only 2% of the senators were latino, 2% Asia American
and none were black. There have been some changes, however. Back
in the 79th Congress (1945-47) only 56% of members of the House
held a bachelor's degree. By the latest Congress the figure was
95%. Nationally, only 27% of of adult Americans had attended
four years of college.
